  I think in this demonstration the Ric came the closest. However when considering Getty and his tone a lot of what he gets is due to not only the sansamp but also the way he plays. I saw an interview with Geddy where he's talking about how he uses the top of his fingernail on the strings which creates a unique attack.

  he has always stated the FENDER jazz is his all time fave axe so i've always wondred why he pretty much exclusively used the RIC on stage fer all those years and i understand he used both quite alot in the studio basically switching as he pleased. i'd also be very curious to know what amps he used on stage over the years i know they were HIWATT at one point but no idea beyond that. also, nobody dares to say it because they don't want to defame the almighty GETTY in any way but he absolutely was quite heavily influenced by CHRIS SQUIRE especially during the 70's. am i alone in the opinion?

  Thanks for this. Always been an illusive tone for me since I play lightly and have to force myself to hit the strings hard. Using your tips I'm happy to confirm that a Dingwall D-Roc 5 will in fact Geddy. The middle pickup is a reverse split coil P, but it's sort of in the Rickenbacker bridge position. Solo'd and running through a Sansamp DP-3X and I'm as close as I've ever been. Tried the Geddy signature Sansamp through a 70s jazz and couldn't ever be satisfied despite this being the obvious formula. Too ice-picky and trebly. The D-Roc is an inherently darker bass and is probably purpose built to take distortion well.

  Good advice mainly.disagree completely on 5 vs 4 string.beginners start with 4 string.make it easy on yourself.and u can buy a decent new bass for 200 to 300.i would also start on a long scale

  I have alder 5 2nd gen. No crisp sound like this, just dull. I've tried to boost bass and treble, nothing. 1gen alder sounded much better with alnico magnets. Any suggestions my friend please?

  Fresh strings and a lower setup are a big part of that sound. For EQ, cut the mids a little and boost the treble and bass.

  The number one factor to sounding like Geddy is to pluck the strings REALLY hard, and not worry about string buzz.

  I have a question about this bass, what is the body wood? The same as the top wood? And do you happen to know if this fretboard finish is what Kiesel refer to as "hard as nails" finish? Thanks.

  Nice, you totally nailed the reasons why I'm looking at this Gretsch. An addition reason I'm looking at this specific instrument is I'm doing more "vintage" gigs these days &, well, as much as you'll have to pry my MusicMan Stingray 5 from my cold dead hands, both the look & the sound are very modern. Sure, you can certainly get good old-school tones out of the 3 band preamp with the right amp settings if you know your way around both, but the Gretsch's short scale & single-coils do it right out of the box. Horses for courses, as they say... Advantage #8 of this Gretsch is that it's inexpensive. I'm mostly going to gigs in bars & clubs in the center of a big city on a bicycle, & coming back late at night... I'm not going to cry if it gets dinged up a little bit, & if it gets stolen, well, they got this instead of my MusicMan...

  What they don't tell you is the amp fades out while you are playing if you don't turn the WIFI of. It continually searches for upgrades to download. Also the Bluetooth sometimes freezes up keeping you from using phone control for the AMP. Over all totally awesome amp short of the issues they have. I thing this is an on going issue because the 800 amp head that first came out had the same issues , read about it on reddit . Got this off reddit :Hey folks, got a new amp and it seems to randomly cut out and then fade back in. Not sure what's causing it to do that, but it might be something with the power cable if some of the old talkbass discussions I've read are correct. Is this something to bring it to an amp tech over? If you have the WiFi network turned on, try turning it off and see if the problem goes away. Quite a lot of people have reported that it does that when it's trying to do firmware updates and it can be fixed by turning the WiFi off. Like I said all and all great amp , but if you get one once set up turn the WIFI off unless you are doing an update.

  Videos are helpful and will cover features you may learn about at a gig, but if you really want to know how an amp sounds with a band, support live music and go hear the amp in person. See what the players on the scene who play the type of music you like are playing. How do you like their sound? Does it sit well in the mix? Is it loud enough? How is the schlep? How do they like the amp? Go meet another bass player and talk to them.

  Yes, it has 2 compressor effects options: Single Comp, which is like the MXR Dyna Comp, and Compressor, with the traditional gain, threshold, attack, and release parameters.

  First off go as cheap as you can and do a little research on styles and pickups. Then what genre of music do you wanna play? I mean Jazz, country, honky tonk or juke joint, rock or metal? Then do have the dedication to play music? Playing guitar hurts for a little bit. It really hurts both arms, wrists and finger tips. If you wanna take lessons then when the lesson is over you still go over and over and over and over again what you learned in that hour or two even while watching tv. That is the best practice running theough scales you are splitting your attention. You wanna watch TV but running through through scales fast all along the neck perfectly. Then the theory gomes in. Then root notes and fifths which sound naturally good together. Speed comes with perfection slowly. Every family member that wanted to play guitar never got past GCD. No time or it was to painful and their little fingers hurt or wernt getting the results they wanted to play a song within a month. So buy the cheapest you can and learn on. Then work yourself up. My cousin asked me what instument was easiest to play. Mu answer was none snd they all are equally hard or easy to learn how to play according to how much he wanted to play them. Even asked me about banjo and yes i can play one. My style is like Grandpa Jones with the claw and totally different style than just finger picking. But i like the sound on a 5 string banjo. I tried playing a six string Epi in Arkansas, my home state, and it sounded like shit. As for bass and guitar, stay totally basic and once you learn that then start adding strings be it seven or five and six on bass. Then moving from six strings to four is a bitch too. But it does give you a leg up sort of. Never ever do the short stroke because its easier. Go with the standarn neck length. And on six you have a space 😊to pick without ever thinking much aboutthe tone. Bass is different. You add a distortion pedal then you play closer to the neck. Without a distortion pedal you play closer to the bridge and then pick or finger. So much goes into the sound you want to reproduce or produce on your own.

  Wow, thanks for this! I play both keyboards (primary instrument) and bass (secondary), so I appreciate this. I sing and play keyboards in my band, and also play bass guitar and synth bass in our studio recordings. So it's so difficult to find someone else who can play both electric bass and synth bass for our live shows...Most bass players just want to "fake" synth bass by using pedals. It's not the same! Some other iconic synth bass lines: Michael Jackson - "Thriller" (1982 - Greg Phillinganes) The Commodores - "Night Shift" (1985 - Jeff Lorber(?)) Janet Jackson - "The Pleasure Principle" (1986 - Jimmy Jam) Bruce Hornsby and the Range - "The Way It Is" (1986 - Bruce Hornsby) Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative" (1988 - Teddy Riley) Madonna - "Cherish" (1989 - Patrick Leonard) Michael Jackson - "Remember the Time" (1991 - Teddy Riley) I did not know the "Black Velvet" bass was a Korg M1 and not a real fretless! Wow! But also thank you for including Boz Skaggs' "Miss Sun" here - I haven't heard that song since the early '80s!

  This vid has one of my favorite recorded bass tones of myself, and it was just a mic on this combo. I’m hopeful the Tone Master Pro will get some bass love from Fender soon.
