After co-founding JazzMemes with his brother Kevin Maddox, Chase created this channel to be the best place online for jazz guitar education. JazzMemes has grown to be the largest online community of jazz musicians and fans with over 414k followers on IG, and he's working on duplicating that success on KZread.

Have you thought abaout having George Benson himself on one of your courses on your channel?
7:40, in Jesus name.Amen and Frances'
Stephane was my favourite. He uses lots of elements that I try to incorporate myself in jazz, coming from metal, like the tritone, b9, rythmic displacement, etc.
great lesson Chase, is the pdf still available? I don't see it in the description.
Thank you! All my KZread PDFs are available for members of Chase's Guitar Academy.
Favorite album Blue Benson
His 20/20 album is one of my favorites right now!
I'm a George Benson fan but the star here is LSO. Apocalypse. Ps you're doing a great job here. Hat's off. As you've probably sussed I'm old ( but I'm full of love and ive still got a fire in my belly)
My fave GB album is actually under Jimmy Smith's name. Came out in '81 or'82 if memory serves. It's called "Off The Top". Features GB, Grady Tate, Ron Carter, Stanley Turrentine, and of course Jimmy Smith. Recorded in a one day session in NYC, and it's burnin'. George is just playing so good on the whole thing. Highly recommended.
Breezin’
She's my favorite! Her composition is every bit as good as her standard versions.
which model your playing there?
Benson is a monster… love it all on CTI but the album is “The Other Side of Abbey Road”… top random cut “My Woman’s Good to Me”… can’t even hear a guitar on the tune but classic Northern Soul for the dance floor. Love from Tokyo.
Favorite album changes all the time - right now it's 'The other side of Abbey Road'
Breezin is still a favorite
George is a wonderful player, and a wonderful human. I've met him. Delightful! The Album: Body Talk released on CTI.
Giblet gravy and Breezin. Hard to pick between them!
My fav record is In Flight. But I really wore out VHS that had Pori Jazz concert from ’88 with Clark Terry and James Moody.
Awesome video. Another of my favorite albums by Mr Benson is "Beyond the Blue Horizon."
Hi I would love to see Pedro Martins among your master class, do you know him ?
Man it'd be the best gift ever 😮😮😮
To each their own, but I'd personally rather think of this as blending D major pentatonic and D minor pentatonic. Then you're just floating over the changes and alternately accessing the more 'inside' major colors or the bluesier colors (with both thinking relative to the root or parent key), rather than connecting two minor pentatonic grids a minor third apart. An alternative simple pentatonic approach is to play the major pentatonic based on the 5th degree of the key - ie A major pentatonic (or F# minor pentatonic). It is equally friendly over all of the changes, adds that crucial dominant chord information (when played over the A7) that's missing in just the root major pentatonic sound, and highlights more of a Dmaj9 sound (when played over the Dmaj7). Simple way to add some more color to this approach
You are amazing. thank for your kindness. Sorry, i'm illlness.
Thank you Stephane! 🙌
Hi Chase - My favourite Benson album is "Weekend in L.A". Recorded live at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California, produced by the legendary Tommy LiPuma and released by Warner Bros. in 1978. The album went platinum and Topped the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
Robert Farnon was an influence on Herbie Hancock
Great Video Chase, Album wise it has got to be it's uptown for me!
My favorite album is Cookbook. Thanks very much for this lesson and for all your channel content!
Great vid Chase. "Breezin", I would have to say is my favorite in terms of every tune on the LP.
Hello, Absolute Benson is one of my favorites!
Great job man. Note, the first phrase is part of the melody (head) of billy's bounce.
Thanks! Yes indeed!
Had the opportunity to sit with George for a couple hours in the VIP lounge at the airport in SAINT Lucia. Shared some great stories about himself with Wes, Miles etc besides his phenomenal talent, he's such a nice human being . He was willing to send me one of his signature GB IBANEZ guitars. Keep doing your wonderful job unfolding these arpeggios and beautiful licks.
Great, great video! One of my favourite albums by Mister Benson is Big Boss Band!
Thank you for watching!
Randy Waldman (GB MD + Co-producer) had this to say, "This is great! This guy really delves into the detailed harmonic structure of George’s solos. He put in a lot of time transcribing the solos too. If someone is an aspiring jazz musician or even a pro, this is very well done."
Thank you, Stephanie! 🙏
In flight was perfect , perfect blend of funk and jazz , and the greatest solo he ever recorded is on "the world is a ghetto" ... but i love all is albums. Benson is a gem.
Oooo I love that solo on "The World Is a Ghetto"!
love this!
Thank you!
I would say that it would be impossible for one human being to create this without any special training or knowledge but there you have it George Benson the Master of harmony and rhythm at the same time how can that be? he's just a human being. Or maybe not maybe an alien with advanced technology.😂 Even George Branson and I know because he's instructional videos at where he doesn't explain any theory and he doesn't really know the theory explain it. How is that possible?
A long, long time listening and playing music!
@@ChaseMaddox listening to music is one thing and George Benson was very young when he accomplished a lot on the guitar and that also begs the question of how he could've absorbed all that stuff without studying it formally?. I would have to say that he has a photographic for melodies . (Meaning he can recall and sing and translate that melody to the guitar at will after hearing it once or twice ) So the next time we talk to George I want you to ask him that question since you talk to him or his people. And you could ask him as a journalist whether he understands the theory that you describe in some of these videos. My guess is that he does not. You would have to be very subtle asking that question because the answer.... well who's gonna admit you they don't understand your theory you know if you are George Benson you're not gonna admit that. Another thing you could ask him, if that horn player or McDuff taught him a lot of "licks" ? when he was with that band? GB has admitted that he studied Charlie Christians solos but Charlie Christian did not play that stuff that you're talking about these videos.
Why is how he played these licks is super important? Because if George Benson didn't have formal study that you're trying to present to us that and he learned it from memory then that is a totally different than understanding the harmony. therefore it is not necessary for him to understand the harmony if he just knows the licks and can transpose them. therefore it may not be useful for us to study harmony either if we just learn the licks???

Classic!
Hi Chase, thank you so much for this review absolutely brilliant. I really enjoyed the deep dive explanations along with Chase, practical guidance. As soon as I heard Benson's solo on Autumn Leaves, I fell in love with, so perfect Benson at his finest. I love the way he also vocally phrases over the bar line in front and behind the beat in such a melodic way. Thank you so much for the pdf and such great work a major credit to you. Sibbs P, S, a nice surprise arriving home from hospital ....mega
Hey Sibbs! Glad to hear you enjoyed it, and that you're back from the hospital.
The Other Side of Abbey Road is a total gem. Imagined, interpreted and recorded less than three weeks after the original released. Genius
Crazy!
the benson burner compilation
Yes!
On Broadway! Live
The live one has good energy!
I like The Shape of Things to Come! Anyone digging on that one?
Thanks for watching!
George Benson's collab with Earl Klugh on Brazilian Stomp has always been my favorite.
Great collaboration!
I think my favorite album would be Tenderly, but it might change once I’ve listened to this one!!
This one is great! I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Breezin Favourite tune In Your Eyes. 2:50
best Benson album? I love too many, but let's go with "Good King Bad"
Interesting pick!
Great job and thanks so much for analyzing this album!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love cookbook but his playing on Jimmy Smith’s Off the Top is next level!!!!
Insane level of virtuosity there!
