I am a wife and mom who tries to find affordable ways to accomplish things around the homestead. I blog about DIY home repair, crochet, and gluten-free cooking!
Love the "Happy Homesteader" theme in the beginning. :) Thanks for sharing your experience with this project! I was curious, now that its been awhile, if the batting/padding has stayed in place well over time and with use, or if it started clumping toward the bottom of the back? Or if you somehow secured it in place before wrapping and sealing it up inside? Wondering how it stays in place without the separate compartments and tie-downs (from the looks?) like the original had. Thanks!

What is stopping the staples in the arms from poking through and stabbing your arm when you inevitably put weight on it?

They are short enough staples that they do not go all the way through the wood piece they are stapled to.

Duct tape is no good for this high heat application. You should remove and replace with foil tape.

As someone who does this professionally I have several recommendations for anyone doing this at their property 1. When a budget allows use a metal vent cover. They simply last longer, especially when the vent is located where it may get damaged by shoveling, people making contact with it, etc. 2. Do NOT use duct tape. Use metal foil tape fire/heat rated for ductwork. Conventional duct tape will dry out over time and is not fire/heat rated. Duct tape has its uses, this is not one of them. 3. Use the metal/foil tape along the top seam of the duct pipe and at all connections to prevent the pipe from disconnecting and to prevent air leakage. 4. Periodically inspect the dryer vent system to make sure everything is connected and not damaged and clean the vent system as necessary. I recommendvthis be done at least yearly as part of a regular maintenance schedule. 5. Insulate the ductwork if it is in an unconditional crawlspace or basement. The amount of insulation will depend on what climate zone you are in.

I can see doing it this way if you don't have access to a new metal duct, but why not replace the duct with a smaller size or purchase the vent that includes the ductwork? They make adapters if you need to up or down in size on the dryer side. For those watching before installation, I suggest using aluminum tape (not duct tape) because it won't crack, shrink, or flake when exposed to the heat from the dryer. Duct tape will eventually degrade and cause leaks around your vent.

I've watched a lot of the dryer vent videos and you are one of the only ones that go through the duct connection to the faceplate. Believe it or not, there are some videos that show just putting the face of the vent cover over the existing pipe and not actually connecting it to the vent duct. I hope more people watch your video so they don't end up with mold issues.

That's probably the easiest way to deal with that mess. Unfortunately, you have to deal with the hand your dealt with. It looks like that was there before the siding, and converting it to a J block would have been the appropriate thing to do for whoever put the siding on, and when the deck went it, it probably should have been relocated. Screws are generally not recommended, but it looks like those don't really reach in the tube, which is the issue they cause. Tape is preferred, but usually foil tape as duck tape dries out over time and loses its holding power. One way you could have used the new tube to snap into the new vent was to fit the old tube into the new tube using your same method of twisting with a pliers. To mimic the proper crimps, tho, you have to do a lot of them very close together, right next to each other. You grab with the needle nose and twist hard. All that really matters, tho, is the job got done and as long as moisture ain't going where it's not suppose to and the lint is getting out, that's all that really matters in the end.
