    ''S Wonderful'. My all-time favorite great American songbook standard (written by George and Ira Gershwin). I think Sassy sang my favorite version.

    @festerfree Yes, the voice used in West Side Story instead of Natalie Wood was Marnie Nixon who also dubbed the voice for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and for Deborah Kerr in The King and I. She also played one of the nuns in The Sound of Music.

    @JAZZ8507 Believe me, I did a lot of research and finding material isn't easy. IMDB is a good source, and where I found the one clip from a movie. I'm still trying to narrow down where to purchase or have access to some of the other stuff they list.

    This was one of many hit singles for Mercury. Working there she found paradise. She did pop for Mercury and jazz for EmArcy. She got to select the B sides of all her singles and otherwise sang whatever she was given and always made every song 10 times better than it originally was. Both she and Mercury made a fortune from their very fruitful partnership.

  • @afrose71
    @afrose713 жыл бұрын

    Her Columbia and Mercury singles did well, but she actually ended up with very little after her first Mercury deal concluded, unfortunately. This was mostly due to her husband/manager George Treadwell, but many of those albums didn't actually sell well at the time and the label kept steering her back to standards and pop tunes like "Broken Hearted Melody." She probably should have gone to Verve after Mercury -- her former bandmates Bird and Diz were there, as well as Billie and Ella, and Norman Granz took good care of his artists. Sassy's second husband and Roulette ended up screwing her again.

    Even if she is lip synching she sure didn't have to. Listen to all the clips on youtube of her singing live. She was one great singer and she always sounded great. Her live recordings are some of her best.

    @jamesmaseobrown "Front and Center here"...well said and very true. No matter how poorly White America treated black performers of her generation, there could never be any denying Sarah Vaughan's luminous and singular talent.

  • @jamesmaseobrown
    @jamesmaseobrown14 жыл бұрын

    @avesraggiana I don't think so cause I've noticed the same thing. It's just the times she grew up in. I don't think I was even born when this was done. It just goes to show you how good she was to be one of the few blacks to be showcased in this manner. She may have entered thru the servants entrance, but she's front and center here.

  • @avesraggiana
    @avesraggiana14 жыл бұрын

    I can't help but notice that her "back-up dancers" are all white...how odd it looks now. And I'm willing to hazard that this video was shot during the Eisenhower era, a time when black performers had to enter through the service entrance even if they were giving a command performance at the White House. Sarah Vaughan would have to wait until the Johnson administration before being able to enter through the front doors of the White House, to give a command performance. Sorry, did I digress?

    I got it from a DVD titled "Sarah Vaughan & other jazz Divas." I purchased it on Amazon. I read somewhere that she didn't really care for these types of songs. However, she does such a damn good job of it.

    Where does this clip come from? Regardless of whether "Esperience Unnecesary" is someone's favorite song, Sarah hated this kind of material and only recorded and performed it for cantractual reasons. She was the jazz musician par excelence.

    If there's a sync problem, it's due to my computer. I digitized this from a VHS tape. It took three tries before this attempt. They didn't lip-sync'd back in the 50's

    James...I have a DVD of Disc Jockey (1951). It has this track but is missing The Weavers two songs. Roving Kind and Aunt Rhody. I am curious if your VHS copy includes the Weavers. They were originally in the movie. Thanks.

    I decided to search for rare Sarah Vaughan video clips and publish them here. What I realy dislike are those individuals who do post her videos and don't tell anyone how to obtain them. I'm still trying to locate a source for the London Palladium vids.

    I'm replying to an old post, but I hope you find those London Palladium videos. For a while, a beautiful live performance of Sarah Vaughan singing "I'll Never Smile Again" at the "Night At The Palladium," lived on youtube, but it disappeared a few years ago.

    Thank you for this; I'd never seen it. Any film of her from this period is invaluable. Though obviously recorded in a studio and sung to playback, it's still interesting especially as she varies a bit from the Colombia recording.

    But saying that classical sigers are shackled to scores is probably a result of you never being exposed to the real beauty of the art. Classical music can be very mechanical if interpreted by "musicians" and not "artists. Not many classical singers have broken that stereotype. But the few ones that have served so much more to the art of sining that any contemporary, pop, or jazz singer ever could.

    Wagner is great. Revolutionary. I understand his art but i, personally am not an activist in the "Wagnerian movement". Brahms Chopin pucinni and even handel is great. i guess I can understand ur comment. Sarah, herself, is quite the legend!!!(understatement!!! a mager one)

    dont get me wrong its a great song and she's amazing. But do you really know anything about the art of classical music? really? If so you wouldnt of made such a comment. but hey w/e right? cause im just testing out my vocabulary so what i say MUST be completely irrelevant.

    Sarah was fabulous. This was done around the year I was born (1957), maybe a little earlier. By time I was a teen ager, she was in her 40's and I wasn't a really big fan. Recently, when I started viewing these clips during her younger days is when I became a devot\ut fan.
