    I have a question for you about how you handle homework. Right now, I walk the room to make sure the homework has been completed. It takes about a minute. 5 points if there is work shown and an answer attempted for every problem. 3 points if you did half the problems or so. 1 point if I only see that one or two are done. I project the answers on the board after the Bell we go over them briefly and then move into the lesson. If there are questions, I'll answer. This often takes more time than I want. This year we would like to do the function of the day warm up as the do now and I'm not sure how to carve out the 5 minutes it'll take. How do you handle homework review / grades?

    How is prep period first thing in the morning? I’m afraid I would rely on it to get all my work done and get behind. Also, I like the idea of impact period! How long is it?

  • @KateDean-SecondaryMath
    @KateDean-SecondaryMath2 ай бұрын

    I have a love hate relationship with 1st hour prep. I love when my 1st hour prep falls on a Monday (which is every other week) because it allows me to make sure I have everything ready for the week. Friday's I would rather have prep towards the end of the day only because I would rather be able to grade homework/tests/projects prior to the weekend, but I cannot because I have prep before I have students. I used to do all of my work for the day on my first period prep, but had to change my thinking and really push myself to spend prep to get head not play catch up. Our Impact period is 30 minutes long 4 days a week. It is REALLY great in theory, but students just do not want to get help. I try writing passes for kids to come, but they just don't want to. We have been talking as a team about how to make it more productive.

    Have you ever heard of eMATHinstruction? It’s a curriculum developed by a NYS teacher. NYS is in the process of transitioning from CC to NextGen Standards. He has notes and homework already made in Spanish. I’m assuming he’ll do this for Geometry (since those standards won’t be taught until next year); take a look at the Algebra 1 materials to see what I’m talking about. The lesson on probability you taught today is something I used to teach when I taught 7th grade math. I’m surprised you say “reduce”. We say “simplify” fractions because reduce means to make smaller and we don’t want our students to think 1/2 is smaller than say 3/6.

  • @KateDean-SecondaryMath
    @KateDean-SecondaryMath3 ай бұрын

    I have not heard of eMATHinstruction. I will have to take a look at it!! Yes, the probability lesson was a VERY basic lesson. Quantitative Reasoning is a college class for non-STEM majors, so it is very basic math. We start off learning how to convert between decimals, fractions, percents. It is a 100-level college class, so we do not get into anything very complicated. We do a little more with probability, but nothing like they would see if they were in a Stats course. I use Reduce and Simplify interchangeably. I do find it interesting hearing different word usage in different parts of the country/world. Our old curriculum definitely used both. I see reduce to mean you are making the numerator and denominator numbers smaller rather than making the fraction "smaller". I did a bit of googling to see, and it looks like both are commonly used. This is just one more reason math is difficult for students! There are so many terms and some mean different things in different contexts.

    How about supporting them with a Spanish video based on what you thought in English and then they can listen to it as needed. You can also reinforce it during a small-group to make they are understanding. However, I find the ELL students do not have a solid math foundation and are many years behind, at least in my state.

  • @KateDean-SecondaryMath
    @KateDean-SecondaryMath3 ай бұрын

    I have posted videos before. My worry is that they are explaining things wrong, and I would hate to have them learn something wrong. I think I am going to make it my goal to start posting more videos in Spanish for my kids. Thank you for the reminder!! I would agree that many do not have the foundational skills to be in Geometry in the first place, and that is a big part of their struggle.

    I have a few advantages with my students doing projects. The high school I teach at is broken into mini schools, and my kids are part of the Arts school, so most have a huge interest in Art, which is what prompted me to start doing so many artistic type projects. My students are motivated simply because Art is their passion. My PreCalculus students are extra motivated because they are our above average student and are motivated to do well in school. Some of the projects I get from my Geometry students are not all that great, and some just don't do the project at all (even when they have class time to work on them). I wish you all the best as you transition to teaching high school. They are so much fun to work with, but just as equally challenging! Hi Dear Dean, I am a senior mathematics teaching undergraduate student in Turkey. I am sometimes surprised when I examine the classrooms in America and see the teaching methods. The work you do is very sacred. There are some points that I wonder about, for example, why the table arrangement in your classrooms is usually in group form, instead of concrete materials in mathematics lessons, Geogebra Wouldn't it be more practical to use it? It seems to me that physical materials are too childish for high school students. Teachers here also get paid during summer and mid-term breaks. Is it the same in America? In Turkey, teachers are required to study for a minimum of 21 hours and a maximum of 40 hours a week. How many hours a week do teachers in the United States spend in class? As a teacher candidate in Turkey, I have always wondered about teaching in the USA. Is this possible? If so, can you give me information about the procedure?

  • @KateDean-SecondaryMath
    @KateDean-SecondaryMath4 ай бұрын

    My students are seated in groups because I often ask them to work together on problems during class. Getting used to working with others is a soft skill our students need to learn for when they get a job. Yes, some of the manipulatives may appear childish but I have to do what it takes for my kids to understand the concepts. Not all of my students are at level with their math skills (some at a 2nd or 3rd grade math level) and I need to find ways to reach them. I have also found that students understand things better if they can manipulate it. The time a teacher is in the classroom varys from one school district to another. I am with students for 35 hours a well, but am in the school building for 40 hours a well (unless I decide to come in early or stay late to get things done). The process to teach in each state is different. You would have to look at the Department of Education for the state you are interested in to see what their requirements are.

  • @KateDean-SecondaryMath

    They get a 0 in Canvas and are given until the unit test to turn in the homework. By the test, if they turn it in, it gets graded. If, after the test, it is still not turned in, it stays a 0. I know this isn't necessarily best for ALL kids, I have had SO many students mention that they were more successful with me because they knew they had deadlines for homework and just HAD to do it and turn it in on time, where with other teachers they don't have deadlines and simply didn't do the work.
