    Hello foreman. I'm looking at a Jaguar XE 20d 2017. According to the garage, it has a problem. He says the engine makes noise but is drivable. Does that mean the timing chain or connecting rod bearing is damaged?

  • @MechanicMatters
    @MechanicMatters6 күн бұрын

    It's impossible to say without looking at it. If it's driving then more likely to be the timing chains. It's very possible to have underlying engine damage though.

  • @rob19632

    Probably caused by oil dilution, due to EGR valve , short journeys and too long between oil services.

    Hi, Im inspecting only 40000 km used oem pistons. I cant find piston ring to ring groove clearance. Its like on top ring something like 0.15 mm, that seem excesive to me, but the ring groove looks perfectly square. Is there in autodata any ring to groove clearance data?

  • @MechanicMatters
    @MechanicMattersАй бұрын

    Hi, there isn't any information on that in Autodata. You're probably looking at Topix for that sort of info. I decided to go for new pistons and rings as a precaution as these engines are so problematic.

    You are quite correct in what you are saying. Reading a fault code is easy, interpreting it another story. I have a BMW which had a fault on the throttle body, It was causing codes on the traction control and then sent the tyre pressure monitor nuts. Go figure, Its a BMW.

    Just a quick question. Who did you get to do the cylinder liners. Everyone I have spoken to told me,they won't touch the ingenium engine. I had one guy in the UK, quite close to Chester, who wanted £1000 just to do the liners. I ended up having the engine rebored +0.5mm.

  • @MechanicMatters

    I can’t tell if you have the 20D or 20t. I’d clean out the DPF if that’s what you have out. It’s an expensive bit, and a a diluted pool acid clean is plenty to clean it out.

    Hi, thanks for your comment. It's a 2.0 Diesel. Yes 100% I'll be cleaning it out. The dpf is most likely blocked. I didn't check pressure readings before taking the engine out.

    Hi I actually bought a xe 2016 with 126k miles It drives perfect I did full service with best products But is it normal that this engine is loud and it have little tick sound There is no engine light or codes

  • @MechanicMatters
    @MechanicMatters6 ай бұрын

    Hi thanks for your comment. The engines can be a bit louder than others. The ticking noise may be from your timing chains. Find a Jaguar/ Land Rover specialist in your area to have a look over it. If it does need timing chains then you can make a decision what to do next. If not then you have peace of mind. If you keep driving and there is a problem, eventually you may need an engine.

  • @MechanicMatters
    @MechanicMatters6 ай бұрын

    Hi, thanks for your comment. It depends how much you buy it for. I think anything around that mileage you'll need to do a full engine rebuild. This could cost £4,000 - £6,000 GBP. You can save some money on labour if you're capable of doing the work yourself. I think with regular oil changes these engines perform better than they have been doing.

  • @MechanicMatters

    Hi Anton, thanks for your comment. I'd like to hear the noise. Maybe you can upload a video of it? Depending on mileage and how often you change the oil it's very possible that serious engine damage could be starting. If so you do not want to continue to drive the vehicle. These cars are great but the engines are prone to a lot of issues.
