Susan Graham is definitely in far superior voice in this 2003 Gardiner production than in her later performances at the Met, or Eva-Maria Westbroek at the ROH. Overall, the Théâtre du Châtelet staging and direction provides an appreciable degree of latitude that allows for a more fulfilling range of sensitivity and expression, taking into account of course, that the differences between the McVicar and Kókkos stagings are worlds apart and each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Anna Antonacci provides a majestic interpretation of Cassandra that is equally compelling as Jessye Norman's more traditional old-school approach; I pound the table for both ladies. Douglas Ahlstedt was/is sublime in his soul-satisfying rendition of "Ô blonde Cérès" in the 1983 Met Opera production (Norman/Troyanos/Domingo), which was only adequate in the Gardiner production.

I hate that film Amadeus, such a goofy interpretation of Mozart himself and a miscarriage of history on many accounts. These hack productions will be lost to time, but the broader majority of Mozart's work will remain masterpieces in their own right, with no need of any silly film production to try and thrust him into the limelight again.

@@vitrusvius You asked originally where the location of the film was set, and it is, in fact, the Topkapi Palace, whether or not the libretto states it. The Topkapi Palace was built by Sultan Mehmed II from 1460 to 1478. And what makes it popular is its architecture. The complex has five main parts: First Court, Second Court, Harem, Third Court, Imperial Treasury, and Fourth Court. It also includes other smaller buildings and facilities such as mosques, baths, caravanserais, and bazaars. The palace was built in the shape of a crescent, with the palace at the center and two outlying buildings at each end. It is located on Seraglio Point, overlooking both the Bosphorus Strait and the Marmara Sea. There are also three main gates that enter the complex.
