There's been all these "advancements" in the field of psychotherapy since Rogers' time, yet it turns out they aren't advancements at all, but simply distractions. Some people won't get this way of therapy, but when you are the client you FEEL the power of empathic listening. There is nothing to do, nothing to fix, nothing wrong. There is nothing more powerful than someone listening to you, saying back what they're hearing you say from time to time to make sure they're with you. It's absolutely transformative! Perhaps the transformation doesn't occur in one session, but over time, being listened to in this way develops emotional safety, and the client will begin to express parts of them that they've never shared with anyone, and that's where the real healing happens. It's so simple, that many can't see its power.

I have not the slightest clue how this was helpful for Gloria. She was clearly frustrated with him at many points in time. There was no therapeutic relationship building at all. I would have walked out within the first 10 mins.

There is a part of me that wishes around the 45:49 minute mark, that Dr. Rogers would acknowledge how dangerous it is for a black man to acknowledge and express his anger and hurt. I feel like Dr. Rogers could do with explicitly broaching the topic of race in this interview series, because it feels to me it is being danced around.

That's his whole MO though: not to introduce anything other than what the client is bringing in. Sometimes I wonder if there are limitations in strictly doing Rogerian style (such as the one you're pointing out) as opposed to a more integrative approach.

It seems that Gloria's standards were set a little too high. She seemed to believe that she should or must be in a relationship with a handsome doctor instead of one of those "icky" men. From what I've seen, Prince Charming doesn't exist, nor does Princess Charming. We are all flawed in one way or another. Accepting those flaws seems to be the path to developing a healthy, intimate relationship.

I love the space Dr. Rogers leaves during the conversation to allow Gloria time to process and not fill every moment with talking. It's so powerful and I feel like this is a Masterclass given to us even in 2024. "Gloria: I wish I would have had a father give advice to me like you are now. Dr. Rogers: You seem to me like a pretty nice daughter." 🥲🤗

His style is not very elegant. He is way too directive. REBT is still the most effective form of therapy. Fortunately you can adjust your therapeutic style.

I find this amazing. The year is 1970, the Vietnam war is continuing, the War on Drugs will be declared this year, the Kent State shootings will also occur, and young people nation-wide are questioning everything they have been taught to believe in. What an opportunity to sit down in a group with Carl Rogers himself and talk about your feelings. I bet that's the first time any of these people ever had the opportunity to do this.

I have to say watching it till the end, it is convincing. What a strange procedure. I wonder how it lingered with her and if it sparked change. In any case, she was the least artificial with him out of the three therapists. I feel somehow that even though he talked it down in the opening, it was completely psychoanytical in his resume and he did make her regress at the end ..

Astounding that in 1974 we were only just starting to work this out! Something so incredibly basic to the efficacy of helping people help themselves. ** Listening and Empathy ** - Positive regard & therapist congruence = growth promoting in a relationship - Empathic Listening both growth Promoting in relationships Bringing about change and - Research evidence shows a high degree of empathy in a relationship as one of the most potent factors. "Looking at ways of being with people that promote self-directed change." [NOT: Non-directive Therapy (reflecting the client's feelings) - - "you just say back the last words that the client said". Carl Rogers was appalled by this distortion of his idea of listening with empathy.] What not to do (per Carl Rogers theory): In many other types of therapies "...part of the appeal is that the therapist is clearly the 'expert' actively manipulating the situation, often in dramatic ways, for the client's benefit." [Not actually] *Behaviour therapy an exception to this -- actually based on expertise (on the increase at that time). Expertise in guiding people - Developed a system which evokes power in the person and not in the therapist. What we mean by Empathy: At all times: (who is CR referring to here? 11:32:) He sees empathy as the felt meaning that the client is experienceing in that particular moment. Relation to empathy: "Sounds like you might be angry at your father? disatisfied with him? disappointed in him?" "Yeah, yeah that's it. I am disappointed in him..." Against what is the man checking these terms? it finally matches the The right word/label/phrase captures the felt meaning of the flow that is going on within him that he hasn't been able to capture himself. the right feeling The right label or phrase enables him to bring into awareness the real meaning of what's going on within. Meaning of empathy as it seems right to me today: Empathy: a process rather than a state (term previously used... state of empathy). Empathic involves being sensitive moment to moment to the changing felt meanings which flow in this other person. It means temporarily inhabiting his world without making judgements, without ... moving about in it delicately Means frequently checking with him as to the accuracy (Still to watch the last half and finalise my notes.)

Gestalt therapy is a widely used and very successful modality. He is trying to get her to express the way she really feels and to be comfortable identifying with parts of herself that she typical represses. It's much deeper then the comments section understands, quite extraordinary an approach. One of the largest therapeutic models in the world, in league with CBT and Person-centred approaches.

Paraphrasing his words, it profound when he said something along the line that he cannot relate to how animals feels because he's a person (human) , racist are so detached from reality in there ignorant.. If the tables was turned with racism as demonstrated by Jane Elliott ( brown eye blue eye experiment) the same racist will demand cry.more than babies for equal rights and justice.. Evil is racist
