    I think Chanel looks like uniform for repressed women in the age 1940-1990 years. So many women became bitter, and had to flex in the post wars years as they took care of the home while their men cheated and in the end dumped them for younger women. Chanel looks for me poor with the tweed. Tweed is a fabric that to me, remind me of flee market and old hostels in England infested with flees and bedbugs. Tweed to me does not look clean or modern and would age you a lot i think. The price hikes on top of this in addition to lower quality has put me off Chanel completely.

    Thank you for this video. I almost fell for the hype but there was always a reason that I never gravitated to them but when I started re-collecting(took a 15 year hiatus) and watching KZread I began the search for a classic flap. Plus my sister bought one before before one of the prices increases(think she paid $8500) and that gave me some FOMO but on a budget as I never go over 5k for a bag. But I always thought the classic flap had “old lady vibes” and have come to my senses. I really just like the Trendy, a waist belt bag, and unfortunately the poorly bag Chanel 22. So I am fighting the FOMO on Chanel and rather spend my money on a Chanel jacket but not a classic tweed but something edgy which I can happily search for at the vintage shops for the next few years until I find a winner.

    After all these discussions on quality,pricing and controversies, I am more on Chanel than Hermes. It's all personal preference imo. Primarily, im an LV canvas girl. I know there's a lot of Chanel dupes out there but i still want a classic flap. I have a Chanel WOC and I end up loving it. You can actually wear the flap casually and not just on tweeds.

    As a Business Professor, do you feel designer luxury is marketed to the poor and middle class to feel like they've made it by flexing the branding out to the public?

  • @AP-qr5vy
    @AP-qr5vyКүн бұрын

    This is just something people tell themselves to feel better about not being able to afford these brands. The poor try to get by, the middle class tries to get their kids through college with as little debt as possible. These bags are certainly NOT marketed to this target audience, this is the exact opposite of luxury positioning. They buy a small part of the luxury dream through perfume and cosmetics, that’s it. The reason the prices have skyrocketed in the past decade is because these brands don’t want their products to be accessible.

    I really like the classic flaps. I prefer the style compared to Hermes. I don’t like the Chanel clothing. I cringe when I see people wearing it head to toe. I find it’s too much, almost tacky. There is the odd piece of ready to wear that is nice.

    I don’t own any Chanel bags but I am drawn to the pearls, the cc logo, the cap toe shoes, and the camellia flower. I own a pair of Chanel mules in black with the camellia flower and I adore them. I also have the Karl Lagerfeld Agyness shoulder bag in red and after owning that bag for a few years now, it has satisfied my “need” for a Chanel classic flap. This was a great video. Thank you for sharing!

    I have to agree, that when I was new to luxury, I too got sucked into the Chanel bandwagon. I can appreciate the bags, but a lot of the styles are too formal for my personal style. However, I do have a few Chanel bags that I love and are perfect for work but I'm conent with the few I have and have no intentions of buying anymore Chanel. I also have to say the same logic you mentioned has been linked to owning an Hermes Birkin. Not a fan of the style and hand-held bags don't work for me but the messaging surrounding it seems to be that it's the pinnacle bag for luxury handbag collectors.

  • @abriefcaseofluxury
    @abriefcaseofluxuryКүн бұрын

    Absolutely! I Know many of us feel that way about the lady dior as well, we may think it's beautiful, but it's not our style, but the collector in us still wants one. And maybe that's why we see so many on the preloved market...

    I can definitely appreciate Chanel but after owning 3 bags I’ve discovered I am not a Chanel girl. I had a GST, probably the favorite of the 3. I did not like my reissue 227. I thought it looked rough and the hardware wear did not impress me. I had a gorgeous lamb skin jumbo. It was just too dressy and I couldn’t pull off the wear your jumbo with casual clothes vibe. I still have a wallet that I use and like. I also have a pair of sunglasses that I love. The price hikes are ridiculous imo. Their bags are not Hermes. I’m not even tempted by Chanel any longer. My lifestyle is just too casual.

    I don't care about Chanel, which is good, since it's out of my price range. Unlike Dior, which is also out of my price range, but whose stuff I naturally think is beautiful. I don't like flap bags, actually. And even the Chanel-esque flap bags I do like, I like them more than the Chanel itself, like the Gucci marmont or Coach quilted tabby. Maybe I prefer the pokey thing in the middle ... hmm, lol. Anyway, yeah, youtube is full of Chanel talk, it's the 'epitome' (after Hermes), of .. something or other, but never did it for me. The beading on the bag you got is so fun, though!

    I’ve never bought anything from Chanel, the esthetic is just not mine and definitely not worth the price. But the question “why do you like Chanel” is so genius. I think many people should ask themselves why do they like Hermes and why do they like the Birkin.

  • @carrino15
    @carrino15Күн бұрын

    I like the Birkin and Kelly and picotin because they are elegant and cute. When made in hard wearing leather it is a statement for life and and heirloom. I bought a swift leather b25, that was maybe not so smart but no one does colour like Hermés. And swift leather get so saturated with the colour and feels like velvet to touch.

    We can't fully control every aspect along a supply chain, but I guess what I'm irritated by is how close to the core this was; let's say a textile provider/source had a shady mill that reated it's workers poorly, but that's two or three steps out from the factory floor itself where the pieces are assembled. It's not that that's "more okay" technically, but at the level where your product is being assembled and then to be sent onto the retail store that is too close to being their own responsibility.

    For me, everything under the LVMH umbrella is now tainted. While I wouldn't encourage someone to burn their bags or throw them out (since both are bad for the environment!) I do understand why many who have these bags are feeling as though they don't want to carry them either. Luxury has been such a scam over the last few years and now Toto has pulled the curtain back on the Wizard. We all know if it's happening under one brand, it's happening under many of them, none are immune. Quality has gone down considerably over the last few years and now it's totally making sense as to why.

  • @abriefcaseofluxury

    I think that's the kicker isn't it? It would be silly for us to think that "only" Dior was doing this, chances are quite high, this has become somewhat the norm over the past few years. Then the question becomes - how do we identify the brands that are ethical or fair...

  • @missopinionated0000

    I dont care what other brands do, for me this was Dior. The Dior who has had aggressive price increases to compete with Chanel and Hermés. I expect SO MUCH more morals and humanity from something calling themselves " luxury ". It is not luxurious to abuse other human beings, especially exploiting vulnerable migrants. It makes me nauseous that Dior chose quantity over quality.

  • @abriefcaseofluxury

    There seems to be rumors that Dior is not the only one that will be named...so I'm so curious if that's just a blanket threat from the Italian authorities, if specific luxury brands have already been identified or investigated or warned, and whether similar allegations will be brought against them, or was Dior the sacrificial scapegoat and everyone else now will get their act in order to avoid being publicly named like that...

    #3. I typically support slow fashion / small batch brands when it comes to clothing and shoes. Bags are just my weakness, but I’ve never purchased from Dior yet and I’m not sure I will. I get this is a completely different scale but Dior launching Rihanna’s campaign to take the heat off this speaks volumes. I don’t think they will own up to it since contractually it was probably something the subcontractor took responsibility for. I’ll give it time or consider buying preloved instead. It makes me reflect on my overall consumption in general.

  • @abriefcaseofluxury

    Same here - we tend to give companies like Dior the benefit of the doubt on so many issues, we trust that we are paying for something above and beyond (like going to a more expensive hair salon, etc.). And not to defend Dior necessarily, let's say if contracts were won on bids, the factory may have faked their own audits, and Dior went for the "best" bid, and based on the factory's own audit reports, I mean, perhaps they really can be like "oh, we didn't know..."

After this news, I am more hesitant to purchase Dior, I won't say I definitely won't purchase anything, and I'm not a big Dior consumer to begin with so this will make me even think longer about a potential purchase, anyway their new dior bag that looks like the lv nano speedy is super cute lol!

    I am a collector and amateur connoisseur of luxury lingerie and only recently started to dive into the luxury handbag market world. And oh man… If I had a nickel for every luxury lingerie item that was intended/claimed to “empower me [women],” I could buy a few Chanel bags with french leavers lace and mulberry silk underwear to match. Ironically, “empowerment” is a lazy word, especially in the context of branding. A low hanging fruit that sounds juicy and significant, yet doesn’t translate into anything meaningful/measurable. What bothers me the most about this phrase is that it’s only ever used in targeting female demographics. (If there is a product out there that boasts of “empowering men,” please correct me). IMO, it implies that men are independently empowered- either inherently or self-generated. Whereas women acquire empowerment from external sources (aka buying shit). TBH, it’s pretty insulting. Why can’t a product reflect or complement my already-there, internally-drummed-up empowerment? How much does one need to spend on empowering themselves before they are seen as empowered spenders? Sidenote- This kind of reminds me of the years when Secret deodorant was “strong enough for a man but made for a woman”- long before before anyone ever stopped and noticed that it’s more accurately “strong enough for a woman.”

I agree, I'm by no ways condoning this, or saying it's their high margin that makes this appalling, it's appalling either ways, even if they are selling bags for 54 euros, and it costs them 53 euros. What I need to be better about is doing my own due diligence about brands, but even those business ranking reports are not entirely helpful either!
