…crazily beautiful…I love the note sustaining scheme technique developed by Nystedt in this piece-how it layers the notes to create close voicings like major 2nds…brilliant…Immortal Bach…

The best Stabat Mater of all time has to be Poulenc's Stabat Mater. It perfectly encapsulates what it must have been like from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, for Mary to lose her son, the literal son of God, the King of kings. I always come back to this around Easter. As much as it touches me to listen, it is markedly life changing to sing this in a choir amongst a skilled group of musicians. I remember getting misty and crying while looking around in awe at how beautiful this piece is as others around me continued singing the notes from their binder. We practiced these notes like math for months and it grabbed my heart in an emotional way.

Sang this on May 19th 1979 in the Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton. There were hundreds of singers, quadrophonic brass bands and 16 kettle drums. I was so moved that I couldn’t sing a note.

Nice, but I need to hear way more intermittent Pianissimo, almost whispered, and less constancy, and instead more ad libitum interpreted free rhythm, so as to SCHMALTZ it up.

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; as he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. Lucas 1:46-55
