Here are the live survey results from this webinar " Based on the survey results, people learned about innovative building materials such as the Perfect Block, Fastfoot, insulated concrete forms, and timber HP Batts wood fiber insulation. They also gained insights into new construction techniques for high-performance foundations and the use of double stud walls for energy efficiency. Additionally, there was interest in the collaboration between students and firms representing new technologies, and the potential for cost-effective vocational educational programs in high schools. Questions that still remain include inquiries about reusing water removed from the system, the carbon impact of construction processes, and the specific details of the new foundation system mentioned in the survey." What did you think?

Climate Change will impact everyone. It is making weather events more extreme. Individuals, politicians and businesses need to dump fossil fuels and install solar energy. We are destroying the very air, land and water resources we all need to survive. We must take better care of the natural environment. All government buildings must install solar panels. All businesses must install solar panels. Coal power plants need to shut down and be replaced with solar energy.

In an exterior wall installation, the green side facing outward makes sense to protect the OSB substrate and the interior from outside weather. With the green side facing inward, wouldn't a roof leak damage the OSB substrate of the zip sheathing because the weather barrier is on the opposite side of where the weather protection is needed?

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.

plumbers who charge more are not nice folks.. Lets face it.. one water in one water out and a pt overflow pipe.. Same on all water heaters.. takes the same amount of time.. Plugging in a 120 line is a lot faster than a 240 line. Still attaching a 240 line should only take 10 minutes As to how much power is needed mostly a factor of the incoming temp of the water from the ground. in most places 50 to 60 degree. For me a simple upgrade which virtually no one does is to temper the incoming water with solar thermal. Does not take a lot of power to go from 100 to 110 degree incoming water to the HP tank. In some cases the hp might never turn on.

Here's a summary: - 120 volt heat pump water heaters plug directly into a standard wall outlet, making them easier to install than 240 volt models which require a dedicated circuit. They have lower power but larger tank sizes to store more hot water. - A field study of 32 homes in California found 120 volt heat pumps reduced the amount of energy used to heat water by 85% on average compared to gas water heaters. They provided satisfactory hot water and most users were happy with performance. - Up-sizing the tank 1 full size when switching from gas/propane is recommended, as heat pumps have lower "first hour ratings" for recharging hot water use. Proper sizing is important to avoid runouts. - Installation is typically a one-day process for plumbers. Cost is similar to 240 volt models but more than gas initially, but savings on energy bills often outweigh the difference over time. - Load shifting studies are exploring automatically pre-heating water during off-peak periods to reduce energy costs and grid impacts. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides tax credits to help cover installation costs. - Performance is better in warmer climates but cold climate studies are also underway. Proper room sizing and ventilation are important for heat pump operation in colder zones.

The video and research focus on 5 performance metrics of common building standards for new single family residential construction. The carbon footprint of replacing an existing washing machine with a new one is a different topic but certainly interesting as well. You stay warmer/cooler in periods of outages by super insulating & air tightening your home. Your house maintains its existing temperature for longer periods of time and it is unrelated to the energy source that you use to heat or cool your house. I think it is wise to have a backup energy source if your primary one has an interruption. Remember that you can have unplanned natural gas outages as well. It is always curious to hear that "green" is not economical. There were many slides that compared site heating and cooling between the various building standards. I think the mild climate zones had a 70% reduction in heating and cooling when comparing PHI Passive House to 2018 IECC. Wouldn't you prefer to pay 70% less each month for heating and cooling, year after year, decade after decade? A lot of us (60%+) in the USA are living paycheck to paycheck and it is ridiculous that people advocate for garbage code-built housing that costs homeowners and renters a lot more money in the long run. People hear the word "green" and think it is something for rich people but, from a money perspective, would actually benefit people that do not have a lot of money much much more. It is no surprise that our electric & gas utility providers lobby to stop energy efficient homes. You could try using sunblock when you are outside.
