Welcome to the official Tom Fell - Blacksmith channel!
I've been a professional blacksmith since 2009 designing and making a range of products for homes around the world. This channel is a window into my workshop. You will see a variety of videos ranging from informative tutorials to my products being made, as well as unique one off projects.
I am very much starting out my KZread journey and will be adding a new video every week, along with plenty of exciting shorts more regularly to whet your appetite.
All my products are for sale through my website, it is my full time job and how I make my family's living, so everything you see in the videos are available for you to buy (with free UK shipping!) www.tomfell.com

Thank you very much! Really glad you liked it.

Hey, Tom. What were you finishing with, beeswax?
Yeah, my own concoction of mainly beeswax with some linseed oil and white spirit.
What a fantastic video! So much great information explained clearly and concisely. There is a lot of knowledge being dropped in this video that has been sorely lacking online. I have always wanted to see/do a design/build class and I'm so glad you are undertaking it, Tom! And I'm sure we all do it, but it was great to see some validation of blacksmith yoga techniques used to get the job done. I'm looking forward to the next video. What a find job you did on this. Cheers, mate! You've earned your portion of grog for today!
Thanks Rick! That's really nice of you. Really glad it's helped! Just need to schedule the next filming now!
Nice video makes you realise blacksmithing is more than just hitting hot metal 👍
Definitely! And this is just commission work. Developing products for production is a whole other job.
Glad to see you back. Been working as a metal fabricator in my 9 to 5 job for 46 years now. Always work with "blueprints" or some type of drawing for reference. Can't wait to see the next installments, looks like an awesome project.
Thanks for saying so. Working drawings are essential for this type of work, for so many reasons. Glad you liked the video.
My Grandpa make this free hand .
Excellent!
Tom. That's great info. You've set up the groundwork to understand the next video beautifully.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Very good video.
Thank you very much!
How do you prevent cracking on the shoulder, the last two I made the heads fell off? One of the best leaf-making videos I've seen!
Thank you! Try not to work it when it's too cold, and use radiused corners to set it down when you isolate the head. Sharp corners are the enemy!!!
👏👏
Thanks!
Nice video. Looking forward to the next ones.
Thank you! I am 'hoping' for weekly, but I can't commit yet.
Вы сварщик или кузнец?
A blacksmith.
@@TomFellBlacksmith и это радует. Но, я думаю, сварка от современной кузницы не очень далеко. Всего вам хорошего!!!!
Работа у вас просто огонь 🔥🔥🔥❤
Can't wait!
Awesome! Cheers Rick!!
id like to commission you!!
I know.
Tom even though I shared the importance of flux still you will not be using flux powder
Correct.
Oh...
Yeah
Hey tom as per your method without using flux powder how do you protect the chain /any metal from getting contaminated/oxidised which leads to weakening and when metal got oxidised/contaminated it will have 99.99% getting breaked and since you never use flux then how do you protect chain from getting oxidised/contaminated
By keeping a clean forge, using proper heat control to not allow excessive scale build up, but most importantly, to shape the scarves, and the contact faces in such a way that they force contamination out with the blows from the hammer during the welding process.
no match for your touch
It is a sensitive touch.
Учился на кузнеца. Это самое первое что мы делали. Потом учились закрыть с одного хода. Ой сколько мы коробков испортили 😂

😂🤣😂 Impressive control, and incredible force, all in one demo!
Definitely! People don't tend to understand just how sensitive they are.
Curtain Finials? No, this is my new serpent staff of casting. 😁
Either is possible! 😁
So… what is the final product gonna be. It was beautifully made… but for what?

*light saber noises*
Hey buddy you're doing rad and bodacious and tom next time when you make chain add flux powder on the unforged link because since i researched about flux powder it is highly important to protect chain from oxidation and when you make chain add flux powder in that unforged link so that chain will not be oxidised and since you make chain of as many number of links it is important to note that chain should not be contaminated if chain gets oxidised the links will become weaker and have high chance of breaking and to protect chain from getting oxidised /contamination adding flux powder is important while linking chain 🤝🤝
Thanks for this! I agree about the use of flux, however there is room for both methods. With proper technique, the impurities should be forced out of the weld. Flux is often used as a substitute for good technique.
Great jig, the. Bending clamps as well.
Thanks! Very simple and very effective.
Your fire welds are always on point!Excellent work! I’d be curious to see how hand fire welded chain holds up to contemporary manufactured chain of the same link lengths and thickness.
Thanks for saying so! Me too. My suspicion would be that modern manufactured stuff would be better (certainly cheaper!) because there will always be inherent weakness due to human error in the fire welded stuff. I guess, in theory, if you could ensure each fire weld was complete and fused throughout the join, then they should be as strong as each other, but I'd rather not x-ray the ones I've done!
