    Is it correct to assume that the right hand column of numbers on the metals, contaminates, and additives page was the pass/fail criteria for each test? Also what was the middle grey shaded column and why were the numbers in it identical to the left hand column?

  • @InsideBigJaysGarage
    @InsideBigJaysGarage6 күн бұрын

    The right most column is the results of the oil analysis I had done in October of the 9,600mi run on the oil put in at the Honda plant. The grey is the average of all the tests but something isn’t calculated right and is showing a copy of the most recent test. I have to get that corrected by Blackstone. But I went ahead with the video as it’s kinda inconsequential.

    @@InsideBigJaysGarage Thanks, for the quick reply! I've got a 2020 Honda CRV and I'm changing the oil every 5k miles with Quaker State extreme durability full synthetic and Mobil 1 oil filters. I do a round trip from FL to PA every summer, but the rest of the mileage is just trips to Walmart, Home Depot, Grocery stores, and such and most aren't more than 5 to 10 minutes each way. The car has the 1.5L direct injected, turbo charged engine and I'm concerned about gasoline washing past the rings into the case. For instance, I've currently got about 27,500 miles on the engine and changed the oil about 5 months and 1,800 miles ago. The oil already smells of gasoline. I've not taken my yearly trip to PA, so almost all of the 1,800 miles are from short trips. Maybe I'll have to look up an oil test laboratory and see if there are any wear concerns.

  • @InsideBigJaysGarage
    @InsideBigJaysGarage6 күн бұрын

    You’re welcome. A valid concern, as early versions of that engine were known for fuel dilution. You could pull a hot sample from the dipstick tube and send it into Blackstone for analysis. $40 for peace of mind could be worth it. They will mail you a free sample kit (you have to use your own syphon) in the mail upon request.

  • @kirkjohnson6638

    @@InsideBigJaysGarage Cool. Thanks for the advice. I'll give that a try. Why do you recommend a "hot sample"? Is that to ensure that any entrained gasoline is mixed in with the oil rather than floating on top where it might give a falsely high reading?

  • @InsideBigJaysGarage
    @InsideBigJaysGarage6 күн бұрын

    Correct. Blackstone recommends it be a hot sample so it’s all mixed.

    I can't decide between Michelin X-ice Snow and Michelin Pilot Alpin 5. We do not have much snow here in Missouri, but a lot of freezing rain, ice and 10 to 15 snowy days in the winter. I am going with a separate set of 20-inch wheels with 255 45 20 winters, can't go with smaller wheels cos the brake disks and calipers are massive on this SAV. Also, downsizing from my OEM 21-inch wheel with Summer performance tires.

The oil in my 2019 Passport with 68000 miles and 4000 miles on the oil was dark brown account more idle time in hot weather so got the oil changed. The oil reminder rarely gets below 40% for me. That is good, for Factory Fill (FF), and 10k miles. I like to drain it out early, at about 1k miles, for new FF oil, since all that "free-floating" junk (silicon, iron, copper, aluminum) just keeps circulating, grinding down the internal surfaces a bit. Nothing too serious though, it is your choice how much you want to wear it down. You can pick a high-Moly motor oil to replace the FF oil (I used Toyota -branded 0w20 high-moly oil in my 2024 Honda CRV recently, to replace that Moly that Honda thinks is good to protect the piston skirts and I think ring wear during break-in). ..... ... Glad you changed the oil filter out this time instead of skipping that, avoiding any extra bypass-events due to a partially clogged old oil filter in cold weather starts. .... Pro-Tip: Valvoline came out with some new chemistry in their oil "Valvoline Restore and Protect" 0w-20 keeps the rings cleaner (Sequence IIIH WPD stuff). Blackened rings have never been attacked for actual cleaning before, this is new. kzread.info/dash/bejne/na2tvKagmMrKc6w.html for the complete chemistry story from Lake Speed Jr.
