I would like to hear in this review something technical. Like how those upscalers handle interlace (some don't deinterlace, some do), what is real output resolution (on some 1080p looks more crisp that on others), what sharpening is done (some upscalers have very aggressive sharpening), what colors they are producing (some over saturate, some under saturate). I was thinking that if you have all those products you will show zoomed sample videos from all of them for comparisons.

The bluish color on film is normal for a Daylight film (Kodak) you should color correct, but you might check which Kodak film was used because if it was a color corrected D (D=Daylight) it will be bluish, or T (T=Tungsten) Tungsten will be orange and it depends how the DP (Director of Photography, cameramen) shoot it it will shift colors with filters on camera and there are several that shifts a bit the image, with the post process you must think on a Color a correction Software I recommend Davinci (on blackmagic page the simple version is free) - Also if the cameramen did not use any filter you must correct it in post but sometimes no filter on camera is good depends the use and where it was shot (to know where the fils stock is some times on the edge of the film and some times in the white strip before the positive was written)

upscaler for SD signals? come on ... the SD signal needs only to be preserved as best possible, and deinterlacing treatment need to be done using software ( QTGMC ) .. and pixels needs to be stored at the same format as original source ( pal or ntsc ) .. any other form of things you want to do on analog signal need to be done only when displaying... (not destructive for the original quality) ... if you want to use an hardware upscaler(losing contrast/interlacing quality andf making weird things on white/black side by side pixes) probably you are just an amateur of video editing.

Great video!! I have watch both this review and the one you did on the different upscalers (several times). It has really demystified the topics. I first got a YITROX scaler on Amazon (i already had a better wall wart for it) which I tried out and had pretty good success with. After watching this review, I went out and found the Gefen scaler. I have it connected to my VCR and from there I'm doing the HDMI capture using an Elgato HS60S. I'm using VirtualDub2 to do the capture (I've also tried OBS), and once I figured out the you have to allow camera and microphone in Windows Privacy everything is working. Again, thank you for your review. It's the resolution settings that I'm having trouble figuring out the "best settings". The question is on the Gefen which is the appropriate resolution to use; 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200, which are all 4:3 (and how does this match with NTSC which is 720x480). Or is using 720p or 1080p (and how do you keep the 4:3 with the black bars) better? Additionally, which is the best size, Full, Pan, Letterbox, underscan or overscan? Contrast, Brightness, Fine Tune and Color make sense that it's a bit of adjusting the settings based on the original video. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Can't seem to find much out there on the Gefen. Thanks!!

Thanks for the great videos! I've started the vhs conversion journey with the yitrox upscaler and hd60 pro. However, some doubts about getting the right settings in place remain... Using OBS seems the way to go. But what would be the best choices resolution wise? Setting the yitrox to full 1080@60 output will distort the 4:3 PAL aspect ratio. Would it be better to go for one of the 4:3 outputs, or rescale afterwards in OBS to a 4:3 aspect ratio? Is there a reason to go for 60fps or 50, like 60 is 2x30 from ntsc and 50 is 2x25 from pal?

Very good description of how to record a video of an 8 mm or super 8 film. I learned the hard way, showing the movie onto a white sheet of paper and recording it with my video camcorder. Flicker and keystone effect were the main problems. ( Surprisingly an older camcorder produced a picture without flicker- still don’t know why but great). Finally got a Wolverine from Amazon ( or something similar from Amazon), allowed to use a larger roll of film. All in all this gave acceptable quality videos. I still wonder how my Channel 5 (or six or whatever) can seemingly convert film to video in real time.

I'm having good luck using a generic white-box AV2HDMI converter into an HDMI USB capture card. The converter can output upscaled to 720p or 1080p both at 60fps and the correct aspect ratio, but the capture card can capture in all sorts of resolutions, including several in 4:3 ratio. I've ordered a converter with S-video in to see how that fairs in comparison.

Your videos have been excellent. They have influenced me greatly. Thank you. I recently purchased the Elgato HD60X for VHS/8 mm tape to digital transfers, along with a simple upscaler- and experienced the disappointing 16:9 aspect ratio result. I live in Canada, and the Yitrox upscaler is priced almost as high as the Elgato USB 2.0 capture card (your option "two" in prior video). And there is little reliable alternative to the Yitrox to get the 1024 x 768 (4:3) aspect ratio. Question : since they are priced similarly, can the Elgato USB 2.0, in which you can select the 4:3 aspect ratio, be used as the "upscaler", and then also be connected in sequence to the Elgato HD60X (to late to return the HD60X itself) to enhance the video quality? Thank you for your many replies! And your sage advice.

The input to the Flat screen TV is from a Coaxial cable to the cable box. The Cable Box has an HDMI out port And to the flat screen TV and the picture quality is perfect. The Combo player also has an HDMI out port. I believe the cable box output to the input of the Combo machine is using the RCA composite cables.
