Convert VHS to Digital - How To Convert Your VHS Tapes - No PC Needed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I will be sharing two devices for converting your VHS tapes to a Digital format without the need for a PC.
Here are the following devices I used in the video:
Option #1
- ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 2.0 (Second Generation) - $159 - amzn.to/3IUz5mx
- ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 3.0 (Third Generation) - $199 - amzn.to/3QD9f8p
Option #2
Upscaler:
- YITROX AV Svideo HDMI to HDMI Converter Upscaler - amzn.to/3HikKxT
- Different YITROX Upscaler:
- Component to HDMI Converter Upscaler, YPbPr to HDMI = amzn.to/48LQWFL
- Supports all the resolutions, but does not have the S-Video Adapter
If the YITROX is sold out, you could try this:
Gefen CI GTV-COMPSVID-2-HDMIS - $258 - amzn.to/3kmxETX
- I made a video on this one you can watch it here: • VHS to Digital Convert...
NOTE: These are here because they are in the Video, but upon further review, I would recommend going with one of the Elgato Capture Cards listed in the Upscaler Review video instead if you are going towards this price point. Thanks - MiddleSiggy
High Definition Video Recorder:
4k60 FPS
- UNISHEEN HD Video Capture Box - Type A - $319 - amzn.to/3H5Y3Oc
4k30 FPS
- UNISHEEN HD Video Capture Box - Type B - $309 - amzn.to/3H5Y3Oc
- ClearClick HD Video Capture Box Ultimate 2.0 (Second Generation) - $319 - amzn.to/3kCyOue

Thank you for your informative videos. Do converters, such as the ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 3.0 you've reviewed, have to have upscaler hardware? Since the ClearClick has 1080 resolution, is there still something to be gained from buying an upscaler? (anybody?) thanks!

Personally this is one question I would like Middle Siggy or someone who is in the know to answer ASAP. The UNISHEEN (which is the one he used in this video with an upscaler), Clone Alliance, and ClearClick all come with a patch cord from COMPOSITE/S-Video to HDMI. Is there really a return on running it through an upscaler before patching it in to one of these devices? I am all about capturing the best image quality as possible at a reasonable price. I am not looking to do this on the cheap. I have serious doubts about cheap upscalers but I also think there is a price point where you are over-paying for the benefit of what an upscaler can offer. In another video, Middle Siggy recommended the GEFEN upscaler. The GEFEN upscaler he recommended has been discontinued by GEFEN and will not be replaced. I am looking for something that is still available along the quality lines of the GEFEN if someone can confirm that using one really makes a difference with these video capture devices. Thank you in advance.

Wow they sure do have lots of gadgets out there, whats the up scaler? I have Pinnacle studios dazzle , VHS to Dazzle to PC when do you us the upscaler?

  • @MiddleSiggyHomestead

Wow I used to own a Pinnacle Dazzle.. What a great memory :) An upscaler is a device that converts the analog signal to a upscaled (higher resolution) digital version. They range from doing it poorly to doing a good job. You can also use software to "upscale" your videos.. something I am going to play with later.. In my case I was using the upscaler to send my VHS Analog signal from the RCA jacks to the Upscaler, which then sent the signal to HDMI. I would then take the HDMI into my Elgato HD60 Capture card and record the VHS videos at 1080p (or 1920x1080 resolution) As people have pointed out, this is not the only way to do things, but I am very happy with the result, and given I am never going to bring out my VHS player to watch the old home movies, but instead stream them on my Plex for my kids and I to watch.. this makes me happy. I am editing a video on upscalers now, should be out this weekend.. so stay tuned. Thanks for the question, and have a great day

Is the VC 500 the same as the clear click 2.0? The other question I curious about is can you use the Svideo input instead of the RCA cables?

I believe the VC500ST (not the VC500) is very similar if not the same thing as the ClearClick. and yes it supports the S-Video Input.

Thank you for your video. Suggestion: I would of liked to seen extended samples of both methods at the end.... like maybe 1-2 minutes each. Maybe you can provide these samples in another video and then set up a link from this one. I think this would be a hot youtube video.... there are many that reviews of these products but no one can put up more than a few seconds of the end video output ....which is what viewers want to see most.

@@MiddleSiggyHomestead Using the HD model, I would like to see sample VHS ... with scenes that have alot of detail . Like distant shots of people as well as close ups. If it isn't a big hassle, it woul also be nice to see the same scene converted with SD digital version for comparison. Thank you. You would be the first to do this.

Does anyone know if the ClearClick VHS to Digital or the VS500ST is better quality to not have glitching, dropframes, interlacing issues, scan lines?

  • @MiddleSiggyHomestead

    @MiddleSiggyHomestead

The Diamond version I believe is the same thing as the ClearClick, but I don't know that for 100%. The VC500ST seems to de-interlace the video during it's capture already for you. When I check my video from it, it does not have all of the blurring I get from videos where it is still interlaced.

I’m looking to do this as well. I think I’d rather have the letterbox (4:3 ratio) than have it be stretched to fit modern screens. Do all upscalers stretch the original video or can you keep the 4:3? Thank you!

Please always capture vhs in 4:3 and convert to 960x720 (720P) or 1440x1080 (1080P) because 16:9 looks horrible for vhs, in Obs studio the best resolution is 624x480

The best way to convert vhs is by recording it into 1080p and upscaling it into 4k and restoring its colours digitally and stabilising it using different softwares.

If the UNISHEEN 4K 60FPS cannot capture a 4:3 video without stretching it, no one should purchase it. 4:3 should be captured 4:3 not 16:9

@MiddleSiggyHomestead - I have enjoyed all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences here. I appreciate the time you have invested in helping others here on KZread. I am in need of your advice and guidance. I have VHS and VHS-C tapes along with DVDs I want to convert to digital files and store them on a WD external hard drive. I have a brand new PC and I also have a laptop. Both would require an external capture device. I have a 4 head S-VHS Stereo VCR and good DVD players. My goal is to capture the VHS, VHS-C, and DVDs in the highest quality digital file possible. I also do not want to stretch or alter the results so that skinny people look fat/chubby or tall people look short/crushed down. I want the image to be as true to the original aspects as possible. Most importantly, I want the experience to be as simple as possible. So many videos on this subject are all about approaching it from a budget or doing it as cheap as possible. Anything would be cheaper than having a professional service do it. I am also a believer in you get what you pay for. I am all about the quality of the end result and keeping the job as easy as possible. So simple a CAVEMAN could do it (to steal from an insurance commercial). I see most of your videos are 10 months to a year old. I am sure you have learned something more from comments you have received and the hardware/software options have changed because some devices have been discontinued and new options are available. Who makes the best external capture card for my purpose? What models are available to purchase NEW (used electronics or refurbished electronics scare me). I see some are saying the GEFEN UPSCALER is discontinued... is there another one you would recommend? What software do I need for my purposes that will achieve the results I seek? Any thoughts on the Clear Click 3rd Generation devices and other products like them that are out there? Any advise from you or anyone that reads this would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

So I would still today go with the Yitrox upscaler, you have to watch for it to show up in Amazon as it disappears at times. Then I really like then Elgato brand for capture cards. They have external versions so look at them, most of the HD60 which are 1080 are now being replaced with the 4K stuff. And I use OBS Studio for the software to capture as I can set up the screen resolution and more so the aspect ratio stays correct
