This channel will serve as a diary of my journey from Class A (1800-1999) to FIDE Master (2300+). I was 43 years old when the channel was created. Let's see if I'll make it.
I'll compete around the world and you will see:
- Tournament recaps
- Key games analysis
- Relevant chess concepts
- Reaction videos
- Progress diary (wins, fails)
- And more!

Allo
Bonjour!
Good luck! You can do it!
I feel like it's doable but I'm not 100% certain I'll make it. Time will tell. This is a very long project.
I saw you play a GM yesterday, good luck for the rest of the tournament!
Yeah it was cut short, as you saw lol.
These kind of videos are my favorite! Thanks for sharing
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
Nice draw!
Thanks! This helped me relax against that GM in the tournament. I'll talk about that in next video.
I heard of you through a friend and we might meet at the Canadian Open. Good luck!
Thank you!
6:38 I think that's why the computer wanted me to develop my Bishop on d3 instead, to avoid losing the Bishop pair.
i dont understand chess, but think its a cool game, cool video.
Thank you! I try to demonstrate principles as they show up, but it's more about the journey than teaching chess. However I plan to make educational videos in the future too.
Bonne journée
Vous aussi, merci!
Hey why u got so less subs on this channel than ur gaming one?
Because it's brand new with only few weekly videos. Not many AVG people were interested in chess.
@@ChessLateBloomer oh but like it's too less u gotta do something about it. I can help If u want.
@@anayas__yt2908 What do you have in mind? It cannot be bots or things like this. It would hurt the channel. You can maybe let people know about this channel, have them sub and fully watch the whole playlist, even if it's running in the background. And hit like on all of them. This would give watchtime and engagement, therefore impressions. But it has to be real people, not bots. There are many more videos to come but it will be about once per 1-2-3 weeks. Let me know! Thanks for caring about this new channel!
If u get more people subbed on your main channel there surely be people who like chess. So I'll do something about it on discord
@@anayas__yt2908 You are very kind, thank you!
Allo et bonne journée

I still get nervous for all my tournaments now.. You made me do the test as well and it was basically spot on, it even recommends me to play the queen's gambit (which was already my most played opening) GothamChess is a great way to get into chess, and learn the basics / some intermediate stuff. Past like 1200 you're better off watching more informational content, like the ones you recommended. My personal favorite for this high-level educational content is definitely Daniel Naroditsky, he makes some great educational content around how to develop your "chess instincts". Good luck on the next tournament, don't worry too much about the one you missed out on ^^
Thanks a lot! What did you get for chess personality?
@@ChessLateBloomer I got Machine as my result- which does fit how i play. I never studied as much as i realistically should have, and i’ve always loved the long-term attacks. For the longest time that was honestly my main strategy- i’m not particularly good at creating that final winning attack, but after 30+ moves of pressure and with a good endgame repertoire i manage to hold my own quite well. Your journey is starting to get me back in to chess as well, played a few games earlier today and getting back’s been a lot of fun ^^
@@somerandomn00b This is the reason why I'm doing this. I keep saying that if this channel ends up with a steady 150 subs and 100 views per video, I'm happy because it might get people to play the game - and get middle-aged people to not give up, especially if I make progress.
I also got The Technician :)
They're the best! xD
just a wild guess here but the difference between moving the knights at 10:47 is that the latter opens up the g pawn to add to the defense, potentially trading into the center.
LIke to support the Knight with a move like g4?
Wait you said trade in the center, do you mean g3 then f4? EDIT: I cover that square too much though
@@ChessLateBloomer I wouldn't expect f4, rather just support the knight is all. Stockfish is only evaluating them at about half a point difference and still considering the game about even in both scenarios. There could be something else I'm not seeing, but if I were white in that scenario I definitely don't dislike the simple g4 to add a second defense to my forward knight.
@@datboi_gee With g4, King safety is affected, that's why I'm having trouble understanding the nuance between the 2 knight moves. One day, when I'm stronger, I might understand it and even come back to this video.
Good luck Phil!!
Last minute change of plans due to a rule I forgot about, I'll explain everything in next episode.

And remember. If it bleeds, you can kill it.
@@jplafor The most logical quote in any movie ever.
Bonne journée et bon tournois .
Merci!
w vid keep it up :)
Thank you!
As a response to 25:28: The reason why Stockfish likes giving up that pawn is because with the king moving to F2, it considers it entirely safe. Stockfish is a psycho, and sees that after Nb3, Qc3+, Kf2, Be4, Qe2, you have no entry, and this is effectively a white fortress, even with 2 points down. Any human in this position would be quivering in fear, and it's definitely not a logical move for a human to play.
Excellent take, I see it now. That's the type of comment I am looking forward to see in the future as the channel grows. People to help me understand this psychotic engine. Thanks a lot!
bonne journée

Que le meilleur gagne .Bonne chance
Merci!
Keep it up Phil. You have the right mindset. It's the long game that counts not to be too hard on yourself off the start. Keep up the good work, we are following every move!
Thanks. I give myself a year to get back to my 2012-2014 peak.
@@ChessLateBloomer I remember those years well
@@jplafor It's hard to "regress" because I'm rusty - it's not as if I "unlearned" stuff but I blunder when I should not. My Daily games are going well, though. Maybe next week I'll do 3-4 more rapid games at that monthly tournament. I'll try to play a lot for the next 2 weeks, before the real deal - classical tournament.
@@ChessLateBloomer I'm sure the rust will come off easy :).
And this is a comment from my Idle / incremental / clicker gaming channel.
Check it out!
This "video" serves as a test. I wanna see what kind of view % it will get, and the swipe rate. The goal is to have a few people click on the related video - which is the channel trailer.
Frankly I know nothing about chess but I am gonna be here watching your journey. Good luck sir.
Thank you! As the journey goes forward, I will be showing all sorts of chess principles.
Can't wait to hear how things went last weekend! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Video tomorrow. I hate the intro without a camera ☠ But it's coming There is a classical tournament this week-end, I may or may not go.
Thx for the classic Phil choke ;)
Of course, right? This "additional move" HAD to give a miracle save to my opponent. Of course. It could not just be a waste of a move.
@@ChessLateBloomer doesn't waste moves he does it for content :P
@@jean-philippeharvey3768 I don't need to force it. I produce enough bad moves for content in a natural way.

already 43 subscribers is good, keep it up!
It's going faster than I thought, all I wanted is maybe 150 subs (for a buffer to stay in the hundreds) and 100 views per video. Gives me people to share my passion with. Maybe help / motivate a few people interested in chess. I'm happy, especially with video 2. This one (#3) is very long, maybe people will be less inclined to click. Thanks for your support as always.
i dont know how youtube reccomended me this channel but ive watched your other channel before and im a chess fan so im thankful
I'm very glad they did because this is a monumental project. A very hard challenge that I want to share with people. It's a new channel so I don't get much impressions. Next tournament is in a month and I will do a full recap. Thanks for being here!
Bonne game
Piton collé? lol
Continu et bonne Game
Merci!
Lâche pas et bonne game .
Je continue!
I forgot to mention what I will do to prepare for next tournament. - I will play as many Daily or Rapid (30 min) on chesscom - I will use my repertoire and fix issues as I find them - 2 weeks before the tournament, I will fully memorize my repertoire - I'll review some endgame a few days before.
Just got into chess and i am absolutely garbage. Is there any courses or books you recommend?
Book-wise, I'd go with "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" But what made a big difference for me - and I will mention him a lot in this series - is IM Josh Waitzkin. I'll give you his playlist. Just watch passively. No boards, just watch. He'll make the game seem so simple. Then alternate between playing a lot of games (rapid) and do puzzles. Let me know how it goes! Good luck and have fun. Be patient. This game takes time to learn. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKmXvKWsebbTpKQ.html&ab_channel=AyrtonTwigg
Welcome and thanks for the sub!
@@ChessLateBloomer Thank you!
what are your thoughts about facing the cpu instead of people for training purposes?
Depends on your level. If you are a beginner, it could be fun to challenge yourself to beat stronger and stronger AI's with chesscom. In my case, when I decide to add a move to my opening repertoire, I like testing the position vs Stockfish and survive the best I can. I stop when I lost the equivalent of a pawn and evaluate my performance.
@@ChessLateBloomer Nice! I have a theory that facing stockfish in winning endgames would also turn you into a chess boss over time ;)
@@hopscotchchamp8282 Absolutely. Did it with older engines back in the day.
@@ChessLateBloomer nice.
@@ChessLateBloomer yeah, well, good luck with your stuffchess stuff
Good game! Keep grinding
Thank you! Speaking of the theme of this game - inconsistency - I lost quickly in rapid right after this - A line I will have to add to my repertoire. I wanna play a lot of rapid this month and buff up my repertoire. Reached 1800s in daily after recording this.
Like and comment if you wanna give momentum to the video! Thanks for watching.
I swear I keep getting this in my recommended videos and Chess Late Bloomer is my 2nd channel. For the thumbnail, check 8:42
AVG is my main channel. This comment is a test.
I will appear on camera after May's tournament.
Good job Phil! Keep on going! I miss hearing about your chess journey
Thanks! Can't wait for that tournament in May.
The trailer moves a little too fast to get all the information, I had to rewind a few times. But anyway, I wish you the best of luck. I'm 53 and I learned how the pieces move less than two years ago. I will never be a Fide master, but I still want to improve. I'll root for you.
You are exactly the type of people that I hope to motivate. This notion that only child prodigies can really succeed in chess is completely false in my opinion. This discourages people my age or your age from even trying. I want to prove that you can succeed at any age in chess. Regarding the trailer, sorry about the not-so-great quality. This is trailer 1, just a placeholder to get the channel going. I'll make a proper one once I have a few videos out. If I have no copyright problems, you can expect video 1 in about 8 hours. Thanks for watching
Bonne chance Phil et au plaisir de te suivre
