    I found your dark reactions yesterday and they're so good I am so excited for you to experience this show. and also I need to mention this idk if someone already did. if so feel free to ignore this^^ but like season 1 came out in december 2017 and the very first scene was set on 21st june 2019. season 2 came out on 21st june 2019 and they mentioned the last cycle starting on the 27th june 2020. season 3 came out on 27th june 2020. it has been 4 years and everytime I think about dark I also think about that. like that's still such an impressive thing to do for me

    3:14 well we don't see it but there is my favorite grandfather clock again, ticking away in the background; it sits in Tannhaus' shop whenever the Stranger enters or leaves the shop but in 2019 it sits in Ines' apartment; well... she is Jonas' grandmother, isn't she? So maybe that is intentinal?

    6:05 well that is what middle aged Tannhaus was working on before Claudia brought him the blueprints; he added acontemporary battery to the phone so he could keep it alive; probably could have never managed to reboot the thing without Ulrich's pin

    yeah the way Noah decribes time, it should be a series of iterative time loops, but their side, the light, keeps sure they keep the loops going until they have achieved their goal... doesn't sound sketchy at all

    35:35 well now you are confusing/catching yourself in causal tautologies; you can either assume nobody can change anythng and assume that the future you visited will always come to pass OR you assume that you can change something and assume you visited one possible future; this is exactly the discussion between Tannhaus and Stranger-Jonas in 1x08; here Stranger-Jonas explicitly stated that he had the same discussion 33 years ago when he was in the bunker, he is still going through with the plan he must have told himself about 33 years ago; but as he told Tannhaus, he chooses to believe that this time he does something different than before; the question is: can he? we cannot tell at this point in the story, but he either changed the wrong variable or changed none at all, who knows

    You made it so far without saying Aleksander (or should I say Boris?) "owns" the plant. He is appointed by a board just like Claudia is before and Bernd before her. People probably get confused because they think of Mr. Burns and Bernd seems to have a great personal interest in getting the power plant built. But in Germany (and afaik in most countries) a natural person cannot own a nuclear facility. The show adresses that in 1x03 when Jasmin Trewen, who hands Caludia the files, talks about the board. EDIT: or was that Helge at the gate? both? But yeah, "Aleksander" somehow manages to convince the board of his qualification although here he "only" had vocational training as a metalworker/keymaker (both of which are Schlosser in German). Kinda sus.

    14:35 so because that won't come up again: Charlotte has seen the door from this side 33 years (minus a few days) later; it is in the cave system on the property of the power plant; the barrels were moved into the truck by that time, otherwise she would have found them there; before that, Ulrich tried to open the same door from the "public" side of the cave system; but of course he couldn't pry tit open because it was welded shut; and here we learn why and how that happened;

    4:14 okay so in case you were wondering who this colleague is who suddenly drops here and why we didn't see him in 1986: this character is credited as Daniel Kahnwald; we saw his headstone in the graveyard earlier... which means later; he is the father of Ines Kahnwald, owner of the wristwatch she picks up at the clock shop, and therefore the probable, indirect source for her knowledge about the dead boys; which means we assume he did not tell her but she overheard some talking when he was called to the site

    The problem here is really that all of the seemingly ontological paradoxes can be explained away by human behaviour and motivations... which was exactly what Novikov and his team wanted to rule out and why they chose the thought experiment of a billiard ball getting knocked into a wormhole by itself.

    So back in the day when season 2 had not even launched the discussion was rather big on Facebook... yeah... that dates this anecdote, doesn't it; a lot of people were giving Egon crap basically for Ulrich's claims that he was a bad cop but mainly for how stupid they thought the question "why not forest road?" was... they simply failed to see completely that Mads went missing in the forest and Egon was placing Helge to the location

    9:38 I love imagery of this scene; Katarina is sitting by the stairs and apparently doing nothing but thinking (which is really a seldom sight in tv shows or movies, if you think about it); it seems to express that she is rather lost that she is here but neither going up nor coming down; not getting her coat to leave the house nor doing anything practical at home; she is not even lying on the couch like Jana did in 1x03; she is doing nothing; when Ulrich comes in and sits with her the zoom hgihlights how much of the empty house we actually saw earlier; the camera crawls ever closer as the intensity of their dispute rises; finally Katharina reveals that she was indeed doing something here as we can actually see the telephone behind her and she reveals she talked to Jana before the scene; but then she leaves Ulrich alone, the camera zooms out again, and he does nothing

    Yeah ti si so interesting to see the confusion when Aleksander lies in bed with Regina. Up to this point the only implication that Aleksander is Regina's husband and father of Bartosz is the murder wall in 1x01 IIRC. For every other family we got a family picture by now. I think they wanted the illusion of a parallel to Claudia being a single mom to Regina... although with Aleksander being an absent father due to his job it is not as much of an illusion at all

    talking about clues some of us knew beforehand that Mads went missing in the woods; well Jana implies it with the way she talks to Ulrich about the things going on in there; but there was indeed a news paper article on Egon's desk in 1x03; and then some other people don't conclude that Regina's way home from school leads through the woods at all

  • @michaelklaus

    Michael's name is only brought up like two other times before we see his headstone; in episode two when Hannah gives Aleksander the massage he ask how she is dealing after "Michael..." and the sentence ends there. Then later she calls Ines and questions whether "this would be what Michael wanted" regarding their assumption that Ines had their power shut down (which begs the question whether Ines was paying their elictricity bill or what is going on there); later, shortly before their power is turned on again, Hannah and Jonas sit on their kitchen counter; they talk about Mikkel but suddenly changes the subject to his dad confusing Hannah... unbeknownst to them, they still talk about the same person; then episode 3 comes around and makes a pretty clear point of introducing middle aged Ines Kahnwald as having no family... especially not a son who would grow into Michael Kahnwald in the next 33 years; there is even a red string on the murder wall in 1x01 connecting Mikkel and Michael; although at that point that could mean anything, like Michael had an affair with Katharina and Mikkel isn't actually Ulrich's biological son; or Michael knows all about the abductions and kills himself because he cannot live with it so yeah, the show does hide a lot of clues in plain sight and allows for people to make conclusions; but it also offered this reveal for the people who didn't get the clues; there is a rather interesting interview on how bo and Jantje decided to put this reveal in the middle of the first season instead of the end where you would expect it

    Also you keep discussing whether it is a loop or not... but what you probably mean is whether that loop is a single closed loop or might be an open loop/two open loops. We just know that Mikkel had already gone back in time to create the status quo in the beginning of the show and we then saw his younger version go back again; it could be that this is the same instance and time travel works according to Novikov's cosistency principle or this might override what has happened before or this could play out in different timelines altogether

    I have a strong deja vue of commenting that the cold open of this episode is my favorite of season one and maybe even of the entire show. It seems like it consists of shots from different points (later) in the season but when you rewatch this you realize that it doesn't. All of these are in the night of Nov 5th and the morning of Nov 6th. This episode also features a rather obscure reference in the classroom scene. Jantje took the lines of the teacher basically from the Wikipedia page (in itself quite the message) on the novel Die Wahlverwandschaften/Elective Affinities by Goethe. This is among other things the source of the idiom of the "red thread" in Germany which became the golden thread in English speaking countries. Then there is a literal piece of red thread and the voice over narration mentions Ariadne's thread... which is oddly enough often depicted golden in English speaking countries and red in German speaking countries as the ancient Greek myth was kinda merged with the idiom.

    On another note, the guy performing the necropsy on the sheep mentions "Yugoslavian meatballs" (or literally translated he says Yugoslavia ground meat things). Those must be Cevapcici and my family loves them ever since we've been to Yugoslavia (part of the coast that is now in Croatia) in the summer of 1986. We still make those on many occasions. They were really popular in the 80s and were probably found in every cookbook with recipes from the Balkan.

    Wait until you see what really caused the origin and started the chain of events in the last season. Your mind will be blown. There’s some Biblical/Christian symbolism with the names: Adam, Noah, Jonas (Jonah), etc. Jonah is the Biblical prophet who was lost at sea and got swallowed by the whale and was stuck in it for a while. Also, the pendant has a picture of St. Christopher on it, who is the patron saint of travelers. Time travel is always confusing since it’s inherently paradoxical. At the beginning of the show Mikkel the adult knows that he is Mikkel the child who got trapped in 1986 and became the father of Jonas and that he was the son of Ulrich, but he keeps it all to himself for so many years (as the letter in the first season showed) because it’s a crazy story. But no one knows how and when the time loop all started which is what they’re all trying to figure out so they can stop it. At the end of the series, you see how, where and when the origin “started”.

    All three seasons were released on important dates mentioned in the series.

  • @michaelklaus
    @michaelklausСағат бұрын

    In the cold open of this season, they basically announced the release date of season 3. Which is also the date of the apocalypse. Many of us assumed correctly so. bo and Jantje had taken to call the seasons cycles (like the ATLA seasons are called books). Season 2 premiered on June 21st, 2019, or, in other words, the day Michael committed suicide. Season one premiered on Dec 1st, 2017... I'm not sure. Is that an important date? On another note a cycle is also a submanifold. This becomes interesting once we know that spacetime is a four dimensional Lorentzian manifold which curvature models gravity. So a cycle could be understood as a specific part of spacetime. If we now take into account that bo goes with the term timeplanes for the different parallel years, we could assume that cycle might also represent a specific group of equi-distant timeplanes.
