I have a 586-8 I bought brand new in 2017 and have overall been happy with it. Have had a couple of issues though. One being the screw in the top strap not being long enough to line up flush with the bottom of the top strap which caused blast marks on the cylinder. I did some research and found that a lot of people were having this issue. I contacted S&W and they sent me a new slightly longer replacement screw for the top strap. I replaced the screw that now makes a flush fit and that took care of that problem. I tried cleaning the blast marks off the cylinder with some g96 complete gun cleaner like some people had, had success in doing but that didn’t work for me. I then saw a video where a guy used a lead remover cloth for the same issue. I bought a Birchwood Casey lead remover cloth and gave it a try and success! I’m happy to say cosmetically my 586 is back in great condition. As long as you don’t get overly aggressive with the lead remover cloth it will take the blast marks off of the cylinder without damaging the blueing. Mechanically the only issue I’ve ever had with the 586 was a couple of misfires in DA with some 38 Special reloads. I’m attributing that to them being reloads though. Have never had any misfires with factory loads. I also have a model 29-10 that I bought brand new about a year ago in 2023. Mechanically I haven’t had a single issue with it. However cosmetically I’ve had more issues with it than the 586. One being the same kind of burn marks on the cylinder. I contacted S&W and just like the 586, they sent me a new slightly longer screw free of charge. I replaced the screw thinking that would take care of the problem but unfortunately it did not.. the blast marks on my model 29 were also quite a bit worse than they had been on my 586. To the point it looked like all of the blueing had been blasted off the cylinder in those spots. I sent it back to S&W and they reblued the entire gun and I had hoped they took care of the problem causing the blast marks on the cylinder. So I get the gun back from them take out to test fire and unfortunately I’m still getting blast marks on the cylinder.. I unhappily contacted S&W again and sent the gun back again.. this time I get the gun back and they had reblued the cylinder again and then left a note saying these blast marks are normal wear and tear.. I can clean the blast marks off with the lead remover cloth but in my opinion that’s not something I should have to do every time after each session I fire it and over time the eventually the lead remover cloth will wear the blueing down.. so it’s just been a whole ordeal with the model 29 that I’m still determining on what or if there’s anything else I can do..
