bench sync is making sure all butterflies open the same, to get them in the same setting. use strips of business cards and place one under each butterfly. then adjust the carbs until they all move at the same time, when you open the throttle assembly. xjbikes.com has a bunch of options.

They are a fun bikes. I hated the speedometer that only showed your speed up to 85 mph. I always had it pegged, so you never know how fast the dam thing would really go. I know they went well over 100 for sure. Piss poor brakes too. I got mine from a friend who didn't know shit about bikes and it ran like crap (I gave him $300 for it) I ended up re-doing the carbs, and synchromizing them so it would run right. It had a half fairing and made it great for long distance riding. I put 50K miles on it over the next 8 years, crossing N. America, New Hampshire to California via the Trans Canada highway twice. Tested with a Mac Tools tester. I have spark. Everything you need but it won't start. How do you check the starter brushes. I heard this will cause a problem with no start. I must have gone through 5 cans of carb cleaner. Nothing seems to help. Never seen a bike with so many design problems.
@boilup70910 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, if the starter turns over the starter brushes should be fine. Some of these motors have never had maintenance done and are impossible to start. xjbikes.com would be a place to join up on if you're not there already, they can tell you the first things to check, being valve clearances and yes carbs. Don't lose patience, but vintage bikes are never as easy as turn the key and go.
@altlandf10 жыл бұрын
I am on xjbikes. I made the mistake of asking bigfitz a question. If I am getting good compression why would the valves be tight. I have never heard of such a thing. I have two XJ650 both are 5N8 engines. Just took the carbs off the non street legal 650. It would not start. Even with starter fluid. Looked at the carbs. All fuel bowls were full of fuel. Took the bowls and sprayed those dumb jets out and they were as clean as could be. Carb cleaner sprayed out the jet some 20 feet. That's a part of the fuel enrichment circuit (choke) system. I didn't get anything. Not even a pop. I am 45 years old and I have NEVER seen such a backwards poorly designed bike in all my life.
@boilup70910 жыл бұрын
altlandf Not sure what to tell ya here. I know older bikes can get mechanic shock, but certain regular maintenance has to happen (valve clearances are one). With my old 650 i couldnt get a feeler gauge under either valve, all were less than 0.04mm! Are the spark plug wires on right? Sounds like you're close here, that's for sure. is there a chance the idle screw needs to be tightened up a little? I'm not a mechanic here, just going through the gotchas that happened to me.
