What a magnificent episode! Playing the track with Numan talking about how he felt after Wembley 81 over it, was really heart felt, and pretty stunning actually. Well put together..👍👍

I don't know much of this phase of Gary's career but I bet he was great to work with as he seems so humble but man is he ever creative, he has melodies pouring out of him! I've never heard of dollar though!

Just catching up with your channel, I think the last time Gary must have played this live was on a guest slot with Nine Inch Nails (featuring Pino Palladino on bass, no less, as Pino was working with NIN at the time). 🙂kzread.info/dash/bejne/o4aAq7yTlJrggJs.html

Thanks. I discovered Bill through Gary and "Change Your Mind". Sadly the "Automatic" album was probably a bit late seeing Pop was really changing and musicality was being pushed aside. I really like Numan as a Pop singer like with Bill and Radio Heart. I really love the whole "Famous People" album and it led me to buy a few Shakatak albums. Bill has such a lovely feel as a key prodder. Deffo in the Best Eva! category. I'f yer bored Mr Sharpe, I'll make a record with ya. :-)

I am a long time Numan fan. I loved that collaboration and the Album. I played it everyday in my car for at least a year on my journey to and from work. And even friends of mine who weren’t into Numan liked it when they heard me playing it. I still play it from time to time. I like every track on that album. Nightlife is a favourite.

Change Your Mind was a great track and is still played in the mainstream today. Think both Gary and Bill were out of their comfort zone when they did it. Which was a good thing. Bill has always come over as such a nice, humble guy. Would love to see another collaboration between Gary & Bill. Thanks for the great interview.

My personal favourite track from the Sharpe & Numan "Automatic" album is "Voices". I think that should have been the first single, as it sounds a lot less 'Gary bemoaning the state of his career' than does "I'm On Automatic". It has a very memorable and catchy chorus too. But I appreciate that often record companies are fickle and move on to other things regardless. I'm definitely a fan of the Automatic album.

  • @ArtyFishal

Totally agree, would have charted if Voices was the A-side. In Germany they did exactly that. So why not UK? Would have been a good question to ask Bill. I wonder if that discussion was had with Polydor at the time?

I love your podcast - the content is great. One request: please look into what you can do about your breathing: its quite loud and distracting at times. Today's software can help with that and can make it easier to listen. I hope you will take this in the spirit it's meant - constructively. Thanks and please keep up the good work.

  • @GaryNumanPodcast

Hey - thank you! And I totally agree, thankfully these are old episodes I'm still uploading and I've since fixed the breathing issue - it was because of an effect I was putting on the audio which elevated the sounds and made it sound far louder than necessary, but in more recent episodes that disappears. I'm even tempted to go back and fix the audio of the old ones now!

I like the 'Warriors' single but I think the album is a disappointment. Too many female backing vocals and too much saxophone. Although saxophone was used on 'I Assassin' that was more restrained. I thought the choice of 'Sister Surprise' as a single was a mistake and I'm not surprised it was his worst performing single since his first hit. I rarely listen to this album. Of course it wouldn't be his lowest point.

His performance of this song in the Urgh! A Music War video is the highlight of the compilation (along with The Cramps performance of Tear it Up.) Truly a magnificent and innovative performer! And going around the stage in that remote controlled 'coffin car' was a sight to behold!
