Gary Numan - Metal explained | Electric Friends Podcast

"We're in the building where they make us grow, and I'm frightened by the liquid engineers, like you."
For this episode, I look back at one of #GaryNuman's best-known and best-loved songs, 'Metal', from 1979's The Pleasure Principle.
The track was the first song on the album with lyrics, and was inspired by the writings of Philip K Dick, about a machine with a desire to be human.
The perfect synthpop track was never a single, but it became one of Gary Numan's most-performed songs, and was later covered and sampled by a number of artists, most notably by Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails.
The episode looks at:
What 'Metal' is all about
Its somewhat forgotten music video
Why it was never released as a single
The various live versions
When Gary performed it with Nine Inch Nails in 2009

Moral is AWESOME!
i can tell you what it felt like .... the suspense waiting for a new album ... then this ... heart stopping .. and now , 45 !!! years later .. still heart stopping .. way beyond his years and still timeless
A classic track from an album which still sounds like it's come from the future. Where it all started for me
In the episode of Crate Diggers featuring Hank Williams the 3rd he says the first record he ever bought was the 7' of Cars b/w Metal. He said it "rocked my brain."
Playing this back in 1979 I was totally blown away and still am. Superb podcast as usual.
Excellent podcast. Co everything you said and it’s great hearing Gary talk about his work. I’m one Gary Numan’s first black American women fans from the late 70s
Still my favourite Numan song. Why, oh why was this never a single? Looking forward to seeing him, live next week :)
Brilliant track and only discovered the actual video on KZread three years ago ... Should've been a single and it's been covered by so many others and there's even a daleks version ...
as an aside .. in 2004 how old do the Beatles sound .. Gary Numan still sounds as fresh as any new artists today
9:38 Moral is Gary’s Positively 4th Street
