    What is the electrical behaviour of the aluminium jointing compound?

  • @petermiles6557

    Due to aluminium oxidation all aluminium electrical joints need to have at least grease, however the jointing compound is specifically for electrical connections.

    @@petermiles6557 So you don't know the electrical characteristics of the aluminium jointing compound? Are you sure it isn't thermal grease for heatsinks?

    Peter, An enjoyable video, and an antenna worth playing with. A few construction points for future builds - 1. use stainless steel wool to polish aluminium, steel wool leaves minute pieces ofr steel embedded in the surface and will rust over time; 2. to get a better electrical connection between the N connector centre pin and the stainless rod, tin the stainless with silver solder first then use your tin/lead solder to the centre pin rather than using a crimped joint between copper and stainless; when riveting, especially on the small disc, put each rivet in and only clench it with the first bite until you have all the rivets in place. This allows you to more easily rotate the plate to align everything before completing the rivet process. Thanks for the though provocation with this build.

    So with the antenna appearing inductive could you not add make the driven plate larger and lower it closer to the cold end disc to increase capacitance, or maybe use a couple of disks mounted below the driven end.? Just an idea, also where each petal overlaps the next, would making the overlap a bit more not increase capacitance? Just an idea, Think I will have a go at building one and see what happens thanks for the video, very interesting.

    Impressive results I made a "Big Wheel" antenna for 2m in 1968 consisting of 2 storeys with 3 active elements each. Though I only had a voltmeter, a self-made transmitter/receiver, and a lightbulb with a loop to detect HF, It worked and I had several QSOs with them.

  • @petermiles6557

    No, it has more gain towards the horizon. At the end of the video you can see it held a good signal right down to 0 degrees. That said it has more of a sky view than I thought it would have, so maybe good for satellites. More testing and experience required.

    it funny enough, did not look on the smith card/map as the 5 bladed had biggest area?? but the 3 leaf looked like more area covered .. not as outspoken in the " 3 fingers " as the 5 Finger (death punch .. som body will get the small joke) the 5 finger leaf has way more gain on end of fingers but lot of empty space in between fingers and befor you told of the air capacitor i called it.. was the smith wrong or did i read smith right??

  • @petermiles6557
    @petermiles655714 күн бұрын

    Yes; I think the advantage of the 5 petal clover leaf is less empty spaces between fingers. I adjusted the plate spacing for the lowest SWR, however the Smith Chart still shows the antenna is a bit inductive.

    Kindly advise: I extracted the output filter board of a TS-430S to work on it. Issues: 1. Intermittent low rx (probably "dirty" relays). It appears they are all sealed (except the tx/tx relay). I tried using a "wetting voltage" as described in a Kenwood service bulletin, but there is still intermittent loss of rx, especially on 10m. 2. One of the inductors (L41) is shorted. 3. How do you test a diac (D18)? (It reads short circuit in both directions.) Apparently it is for overload/surge protection. 4. The S meter reads extremely low. I failed to recalibrate S9 (even with the trim at maximum, it doesn't reach 9).

    I don't believe this procedure accomplishes anything. Firstly, there is only 1 relay on the RF Unit board of the TS430S. When the radio is in receive mode, there is a 47k ohm resistor to ground in each of the receive filters. They all have PIN diodes, which serve the same purpose as a relay. Maybe earlier models of the TS430S used relays instead, but I don't know where they would go and there is no indication of those relays in the service manual. I suggest that anyone thinking about doing this procedure to first remove the bottom panel of their radio and take a good look at the large PCB on the underside of the radio. Mine only has one relay. I am going to replace it with the OEM relay, a Fujitsu FBR211A. Other possible causes for desense in this radio are not enough drive for RL1, incorrect PIN diode bias, and defective PIN diodes. During receive RL1 is actuated. Inadequate drive may leave the contacts separated or just barely touching. In that case there is still a signal path from the antenna connector to the input filters through a 470 ohm resistor. The AGC will take over, but not enough to overcome the desense. I have noticed that when my TS430S goes into desense on one band, it does the same on all other bands. So that would tend to rule out defective PIN diodes. I think the desense problem many see with this radio is caused by RL1 dropping out due to increased internal friction caused by age. OK, I took a closer look at the block diagram and schematics in the TS430S User Manual and see how the transmit low pass filters are also used on receive; and that is where all those relays are. However I am still not convinced this procedure accomplishes anything. There is a 100 μH inductor, L41, right next to RL1-1 on the Filter Unit. This inductor is connected to the RA pin, which goes to the antenna center pin and the other side of the inductor goes to ground. So the 500 mA just goes through that inductor, dissipating most of the power. The relays in the Filter Unit have to handle 100 Watts on transmit. If the receive contacts get dodgy so easily, why doesn't it behave worse on transmit?

    Nice job. If I was going to build a Tee, I would definitely provide a couple of vacuum relays in the circuit to short out either capacitor when tuning coaxial fed antennas. That would give you a low pass and high pass L to go with the T. The L is more efficient and unbalanced like coax. Most of the time when you are tuning a coax antenna you don't need much in values. Just a thought. 73

    C104 is the most common audio failure seen in the TS-450s and TS-690s model. If you have an audio issue, always check that cap first. Most of these radios are now at the age where all capacitors should be checked and replaced as needed. Also take a very good look at the memory battery on the back of the faceplate, if they leak they can cause a lot of damage. They're not too particularly hard to replace either.
