Harte Research Institute

Harte Research Institute

The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth-largest body of water in the world and a giant laboratory to explore the greatest questions facing our oceans today. The Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, founded in 2000, works across the Gulf-bringing together three countries and multiple disciplines to create science-based solutions that have a lasting impact. Because we believe what’s good for the entire Gulf is good for us all.

I once went to the beach and my family all crowded around a small area. I see this thing, and 4-year-old me is like "BLUE FISHIE ON BLUE FISHIE LINE" and grab it by "the fishing line". One word still sticks in my mind: "Ow"

I thought they were juvenile Portuguese man o' war... Nine or ten years ago, I had collected a dozen an put them on a separate hexagonal fish tank, hoping it would grow into a full Portuguese man o' war. It never did. It stung like someone struck my hand with whip. Of the doezen I collected, most died but three survived for about 3or 4 months, I thought some requirement was missing for it to become "an adult". Now I come to find out it's whole different species, but related to the Portuguese man o' war. Anyways, I named the 3 surviving Spaghetti Monsters, _La Niña, La Pinta, La Santa Maria_ for giggles.

Haha had to laugh when he said you don't want to touch any part of it. In Australia kids for generations have been running along the beach popping them with their feet.

Wow, you should have genuinely excluded the last warning. People should leave them alone because they are living being, not because they sting.

Yep, once you get stung by a Blue Bottle you never ever forget it. Blue Bottles are the smaller species of a Man O War. These look like monsters, the tentacles are much bigger vs a Blue Bottle.
