Mike, great video, I have a couple questions. First, it looks like you removed just the timing cover, without removing the oil pan? So it's possible to replace the timing chains without removing the pan or the cylinder head? Second, how come you're not my neighbour? I need someone that knows these engines to come make sure I don't mess mine up when I replace the timing chain!
@MrMikebraund5 жыл бұрын
You can remove the front covers and change the chains with the cylinder head on. Make sure you know where top dead centre is before you start and reference them all find the marks on the cogs and pulleys and put a mark on them so that when you put it back together it will work. If you have any questions drop me a note. Mike

@@MrMikebraund Thanks a lot. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy a timing chain kit? Or better yet, do you have any idea what else my metallic cyclic type noise that changes with engine speed, and only heard in the front lower part of the engine(Still heard with the belt removed)? Sometimes it won't make the noise at all, usually for instance on a fresh oil change when I first start the engine... could I maybe get away with just doing the hydraulic tensioner? Pulling on the chain through the oil filler cap, it doesn't appear to be worn out at all, nice and tight on the cam gear anyway.

Hi Daud, I would advise you to change the chain as if it has stretched the chain will now be longer and the distance it travels will also have changed, the more distance it travels the more it will send the timing out. watch the video on how to set the gauge up and how to set the timing. If when you bring the pump up to the correct timing value you struggle to achieve this, it is worth investigating whether the pump is set at 180 deg's out. It happened to me. I found it in the Range Rover manual down loaded online. On the P38 with the engine at Top dead centre the reading on the travel gauge should be at 0.90 mm +/- 0.02 mm (0.035 +/- 0.001 in) . If you have any more questions please ask.
@MrMikebraund7 жыл бұрын
Try looking the manual fro a 325 tds . Go the section headed engine type. There it will give you the engine type firing order and timing setting for that particular fuel injection pump. Somewhere on that page, it should tell you the make and model of the fuel injector pump. The section headed fuel system states that for engines with less than 20,000 km the reading should be 0.95 +/- 0.02 mm. For engines with more than 20,000 km a reading of 0.90 mm is required. I hope that helps.
