Resetting the Timing on a P38

I posted this video because I had changed the fuel injector pump and on running the engine the upper timing chain guide had broken and jammed the timing chain causing the engine to go out of timing so I put this together to show the process and maybe help someone else who may have the same problem. I'm not a mechanic so please bear with me.

Mike, great video, I have a couple questions. First, it looks like you removed just the timing cover, without removing the oil pan? So it's possible to replace the timing chains without removing the pan or the cylinder head? Second, how come you're not my neighbour? I need someone that knows these engines to come make sure I don't mess mine up when I replace the timing chain!

You can remove the front covers and change the chains with the cylinder head on. Make sure you know where top dead centre is before you start and reference them all find the marks on the cogs and pulleys and put a mark on them so that when you put it back together it will work. If you have any questions drop me a note. Mike

@@MrMikebraund Thanks a lot. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy a timing chain kit? Or better yet, do you have any idea what else my metallic cyclic type noise that changes with engine speed, and only heard in the front lower part of the engine(Still heard with the belt removed)? Sometimes it won't make the noise at all, usually for instance on a fresh oil change when I first start the engine... could I maybe get away with just doing the hydraulic tensioner? Pulling on the chain through the oil filler cap, it doesn't appear to be worn out at all, nice and tight on the cam gear anyway.

@@Borgschulze I buy a lot of parts from Rimmer Bros. If you have a metallic knock or clicking you have something out of line or lose. My advice would be to find it and rectify it, and then move on

@@MrMikebraund I got my timing chain all installed, pump is timed 0.95mm in my case M41 (4cylinder), now just need to tighten that pesky crank bolt... any tips for the crank bolt? The noise I had happened to be a bushing in the lower timing chain that wore out on one side only causing the chain to only have tension on one side... it partially wore through the pin on that link too, really happy I took it apart.

@@MrMikebraund Just wanted to update, new timing chain all installed, actually found I had the wrong spec for the injection pump... manual says 0.6mm, so I timed to 0.75mm. Car starts great, engine is nice and quiet again. Ended up making a crank holding tool that braces against the ground under the car, and had to make a cheater bar for my breaker bar, and used paint marker to torque to angle. Thanks for making these videos.

The dial indicator I bought on ebay had the adapters with them. The link is: 7PCS DIESEL FUEL INJECTION PUMP STATIC ADJUSTING TIMING INDICATOR GAUGE TOOLS ( 262333302824 ). the cost was just under £40

How did you know which adapter to use? Is there just a certain one that will fit that injection pump? Thanks

There are two adapters in the kit, It is the thinner of the two you use and the pin extension screws onto the end of the dial indicator after unscrewing the nipple. keep the nipple safe as you will need to re attach it to use the travel gauge in some other application. I can post a vid if you like.

Hi Mike, I've got one of these to do. The fuel pump pulley needs replaced. I guess to replace this I'll basically need to do everything you did in this video? Thanks.

Hi Mike. Great video I am in the same position. Just had a few questions though as I am not sure about a few things. Would you be able to private message me an email or phone just to ask few questions? Thank you.
