Hello, my name is Alejandro. I am a mechanical engineering with experience in aerospace and composites. I made this channel for those who appreciate the beauty of cars and motorcycles. As an engineer I appreciate the engineering that’s gone into each component, but as an enthusiast I can’t help but impart my own style on the machine.
My goal for this channel is to facilitate a conversation about tuning and modification, pass along all the lessons I've learned on my journey, and empower my viewers with confidence and appreciation when approaching their own vehicles. In the long term I hope to gain the confidence of the community in a way that would allow me to be a representative and collaborator on vehicle and modification design in order to utilize my engineering background to bring other's the products they dream about.

Nice to see one make 10k with not many of any issue's. The whole camshaft business has scared me off but I always come back looking lol. The price of these bikes just now is rock bottom as well which for a buyer is great.
i put 12000 on it in ) months
The viscosity ratings are not ideal. They are coming in low. I would think about changing the oil a little more often perhaps every 3000 miles vs 4000. Once viscosity falls below spec it will speed up engine wear.
Hello, friend Do you know if the 790 radiator will work on the 890 R?
Cam failure
Hello Alejandro, thank you for your vlog. I've already ridden 11,000 km on my 2023 Duke 890 R. I had to replace one clutch kit, but that's my fault: I practiced a lot in the training area at low speeds, doing police turns and stuff like that. With this engine torque, it's easy to lose the friction zone of the clutch and burn it out if you're not used to it. Also, there have been some issues: recently, the ignition fuse blew while riding. The dealer hasn't been able to determine the cause yet. Almost all of the kilometers were ridden in the mountains, quite actively. The tires wear out very quickly; during this time, I've already changed 4 rear tires and 2 front tires. It's a fantastic motorcycle, and I'm still discovering its capabilities.
The quickshifter seems to be hit or miss with some bikes shifting fine and like my bike it is not consistent between gears or smooth. I run my chain on the looser side, like all my KTMs - does not make my bike shift better and I've adjusted the shift linkage numerous times to no avail. I got tired and annoyed and turned quickshifter off. By the way - could not help but notice the kink in your chain - often the rivet link is too tight or your chain is old.
4,000 miles on my 2021 890r owned from new, its been faultless love the thing, done some track riding and mostly road, only mods are decat with akra pipe, remap 121hp at the rear wheel, its rips well.
What is the technical explanation between the quickshifter and a slightly dirty chain, as shown in the video? A little dirt on the chain guide and on the pinion is perfectly normal and should not be viewed as critical. The dirt only collects where the chain does not touch the dirty areas. Where dirt is picked up, it is also thrown off again. A modern O-ring chain does not require much maintenance. What is described as critical here is, in my opinion, exaggerated. The chain sounds different after cleaning with the cleaning spray because the grease has been removed and diluted. After greasing, the grease is still thin. This is why the chain runs more easily. After a few hours, the grease is viscous again and has more resistance. That is the reason for the different sound and less resistance. I own a Husqy Norden 901 which is pretty much identical to the KTM 790/ 890. Despite many dusty roads, the quickshifter and the chain have been working for 25,000km to date.
Although I do think I have a pinhole leak in my head gasket as I think the carburetion gases are getting into my radiator and over pressurizing it so the water doesn't suck back in but I'm still able to ride it I lose about one cup of fluid on every track day but I'm going to do a leak down test and probably change the head gasket
Hi there I love my 890 I have about 6500 me all track my bike is track only I love this bike and it smokes most all the Thousand CC's I am an expert Rider and this bike can't be beat on the track it's just so light
Excellent video, thank you
Thank you, let me know if you need any other DIY’s. I’ve got my 10k service coming up!
9000km on my 2020 790 Duke. Bought it brand new in october last year. No problems what so ever. Flawless qs. See the chain as a part of the gearbox, and therefore tension is important. (Not just for KTM!)
6400 miles and my cams are worn, waiting on followers and an intake camshaft.
10k here without much issue other than valve cover gasket leak and front sprocket gasket leak both fixed under warranty. My QS is still a source of frustration, switched to GP shift awhile back which seemed to help but it still acts up when you least expect it 🤣
My cams are beeing replaced now too. I heard an unusual sound and delivered it for inspection a week ago. Seem to be quite a lot of horrorstories aboud the cams on the 890 duke r. Mine had only 9300 miles in the clock.
It's not just the 890 R, anything with a 790 or 890 LC8c engine appears to be susceptible.
21 890R 14,500 miles. I have the extended warranty.
I’ve got 18,800 miles on my 890 Duke R and did the valve clearance check to find that my cams both need to be replaced😢 Waiting on parts that are back ordered before I put it all beck together. It’s been a great bike otherwise!
Excellent!!
I already cleaned the sprocket box but forgot the chain guard... ktm garage made my chain more stiff than the manual instructions...
Ahhh, yeah the chain guard gets pretty filthy too. That guide of the bottom will really jack up the chain from the center if oil and debris are left in it. Yeah… I hear that from most folks and they run into quick shift trouble eventually because of it. My more slack setting is much much smoother. Safe riding brother!
I just got 890 adventure, What slip on do you have and did you do the decat? And what tune do you prefer
I have the SC Project S1 and get compliments on the sound all the time. I just released a video with a high quality recorder. I have the full system in the garage but haven’t tuned yet so I am not gonna install it until then. I am definitely going to go for a Rottweiler tune, they’re real pros over there and the lengths they go through to maximize performance is on display in their 890R tuning video. You should check it out!
You only live once , and money comes and goes , Besides, no one pays their medical bills.Anyways that's why insurance sucks😅 Hop on the wagon buddy there's plenty of space😂😂
Yeah, I’m full send. Screw it. The dream is if I can get this channel to help pay some hobby bills then that’d be amazing. Gonna keep kicking out useful and fun videos for everyone to try and get there.
I'm think I'm less than 100 miles from 10k. S1K in the garage has slowed the 890 miles down a bit but i still love it, just rode it to work yesterday 😁
Hope you’re doing well man! S1K would definitely be a worthy distraction from the 890. Did you already do your 9,300 mi service?
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle actually just bought stuff to do oil change #3, have a chain, need to get sprockets and tires and knock everything out soon 🤪
@@chrisfurby8241 you should send your oil in for testing! It’d be great to compare our latest
Sc sounds good. Still waiting on my arrow exhaust. Coming from France estimated shipping time was 3 to 4 weeks
Thanks! I think so too, I love the depth of sound especially for the crackles when coming off throttle under load. Damn, that’s gonna be so nice! Hoping it comes early for you man, ride safe 🔥
7k on my 2022, living in the NE
Nice, you’re hitting it at a much faster pace! Hope you’re out enjoying right now, I just got back from a ride!
I love my 890r but not as many miles as you.
It’s hard not to take it every single day it’s above 50 degrees for me. A nice little thrill to work and back!
Just under 23k miles on my 2020 790 duke
Damn that’s awesome, do you live someplace you can ride year-round?
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle I wish, over in NY. I’m a realtor, during good riding weather I usually take my bike to all my appointments. Mostly racked up the miles from work. Definitely a good excuse to take the bike out.
I figured out a solution to the immobilizer failure. Not sure if it has happened on pther ktms but it through that code when the battery voltage was low. Replaced the battery with a lithium battery. Boom no more issues since. Waiting on my delivery of a arrow gp2 titanium exhuast. Currently running a leo vince lv10 dual. Btw great content.
Do you recall what voltage that occurred at? That arrow exhaust should be awesome! I’m a sucker for titanium and carbon fiber. Thanks man!
@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle I wish I checked it. But guess the battery was low enough to throw that code. I now know to put a battery tender on it for the winter.
Link to adapter?
Very clean tutorial of changing engine oil and have been following your videos and by your experience which engine oil performs better especially during hot summer MOTOREX or MOTUL 300V or MOTUL 7100 or AMSOIL or PUTOLINE...Thanks
i figured this one out on my own but it's a good one to know. even the people at KTM's customer service didn't know how to do it.
Haha the good ol customer service folk shrug. This is why I like to do my own work. I’m sure I take longer to get it done but feels good to do it all myself. Cheers man!
i have a 2021 890 duke and i'm not seeing any metal on my magnets. going to keep a close eye on it, i know there have been issues with cams, and the quickshifter. sending an oil sample to the lab might not be a bad idea.
How many miles you working with? Did you buy yours new or after a couple oil changes? I’ll be sending another sample in soon and will be posting again and of course sharing the results when the come back.
I experienced the now dreaded premature camshaft lobe wear issue that a number of people have discovered upon doing the first valve check / adjustment at 18k miles for my 2019 790R Adventure. I am pretty sure this occurred because the cam lobe oil jet nozzle got plugged, most likely by a tiny piece of metal shaving. To unplug the oil jet it took a piece of electrical motor winding wire that is approximately the width of a human hair. Very long and sorted story in my case. I ultimately ended up replacing the engine with a 2020 790 Duke engine, which so far has taken me from Seattle to Cabo and back 6k miles.... And I agree, that quick shifter use is a possible, perhaps likely, source of metal shavings.
I also just experienced the camshaft lobe wear on my ‘20 890 Duke R. Checked the valves at 18k miles and three of the cam followers were also worn down. Now, I get to replace the camshafts and three followers which are on back order for 2 months :(
Me too guys... What the heck with this engine 😢😢😢
Oh damn… I’m going to have to check on this. Wow, I’m gonna look into this and maybe put together a video for all of us. Thanks for much for sharing guys!
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle That would be great as your videos are awesome. I can send you photos of my cams. I called around to local shops to see if any had the cam follower replacements and one shop said they have 8 on order because of an 890 adventure that blew its engine
I am a mechanic and do all of my vehicles maintence and repairs by my self. I always change my oil at arround 4k-5k miles and of course once a year. My local dealer said you should change oil more flrequently... I am paying 25€ per liter for motorex as the manual suggests and I service my bike in half the manual service mark of 10k miles yet, my exhaust cam is damaged at the first lobe. The strange thing is that mine was on its beginning and cam follower is damaged at the start of the ramp so all valve clearances are almost in spec
Thanks for sharing bro.. It's much appreciated
I got you, also I’m gonna have to follow my own tutorial here soon. My tires are COOKED but this is my second season on the same ones. I appreciate your support, let me know what other info you need for the bike.
Hello ! Is sport settings the factory settings ? Are you sure ? Is it not standard when you get this new ?
No, Im pretty sure the first dealer assembly process instructs them to set the suspension to the standard setting. Which do you ride on?
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle sport and i like it
@@xy6624 it does feel much better in my opinion as well. The guy I bought mine used from at 1500 miles was riding in super soft settings and the bike would jerk backwards when I’d get on the throttle, super annoying!
You khown how to make a ecu reset? Thanks!!
Hmmm… how do you mean? I know how to reset all the codes on the ECU so it is in a fresh boot mode but I’m not sure about complete reset?
Cheers mate great video! Just sent my duke 890r up to sports, now I need the weather to clear up to test it out 🇬🇧
You getting out on the bike yet? How’s the suspension feeling? I’ve still got mine on sport and it feels nice and direct. I’ve chewed through tires haha, I’m gonna need new ones soon. 10k miles just surpassed. Ride safe brother!
Recently performed an oil change on my 23 890R. Noticed you were using JASO MA motor oil and not MA2 as recommended in the manual ( at least in the 23). MA2 should provide a higher level of static and dynamic clutch friction which should reduce clutch slip and wear.
I am going to double check the service manual. I typically don’t deviate too far from what is recommended by the engineers designing the bike so it’d surprise me if I made that big of a mistake, I appreciate you pointing it out! I’m about to change the oil as well, so this is great timing to have seen this. Hope your season is going well 👌🏽
My KTM 890 Duke R is hard to get it to shift to neutral. Is this normal?
Me too.
Yes, from 1st my bike will likely never get into neutral. I always just shift it up to second turn it off and then down to neutral. Not sure if it was designed this way as to mitigate accidental neutral shifts while riding but it is a bit annoying.
👇 "Promo sm"
which drill driver are you using ?
Hahaha just my little ryobi, nothing crazy man.
no new screen/plug o-rings needed?
I replace the screens on the follow up service and the o rings on the first as they come in the package. I believe it’s recommended to change both each time as it all comes in service kit I buy.
Thank you
Thank you for the support and comment! Let me know what other videos you need
the exact video i was looking for
Glad I could help you brother! Let me know what others you need and I’ll try and get them uploaded. Ride safe 🔥
Hey Alejandro, great videos! Thank you for helping us work on the bike. I wanted to recommend the steering damper oil change, this for me has been the best result/price upgrade I have done to my 890R. Also, it makes riding this bike so much safer and easier, you will feel the difference! If you have the time, check it out, it's completely worth it. I used Motul 20W Heavy.
Man, sorry I missed this! That is great news, I am definitely going to check it out now. I will likely create a video on it when I get around to it. What throttle are you running, the standard? I was trying to get the short throw and I also used a space to eliminate the play in the stock one. Helped me ride more smooth, I am sure the short throw throttle would take some getting used to but I still want it.
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle standard, with the Track mode response. I understand why you don't like, but I got used to it. I do have puppy grips on the handles, which in general have improved the feeling.
