    Interesting commentary on inflation and buying power. Yes, our wages are higher but we are taxed more. One thing to think about is “productivity”. We are much more productive, so prices should come down because things are easier to make ?

    Yes but let me think... here in Italy 22% is the VAT tax, ~35% income tax, 27.7% mandatory state managed retirement plan... yep, easier to produce but with a partner at 80% who spends all the money in alcohol and prostitutes and doesn't work a single day... no, is not that, sure the prices are higher 'cause we are more social responsible lol :)

    I have the luck to live in a relatively small city, going to buy groceries in different small shops and stop to chat with people in the main square... I see every day that there are a lot of good people and really few morons out there. When I grew up my father drove me to school everyday but Saturday, his office was nearby so was easy. We always stopped at the newspaper shop to get the newspaper. Some days the owner didn't wake up in time to open and there were the packages of newspapers left in front of the door. We, as everybody else took a newspaper and left the 1000 lire (half dollar) over the pack of newspapers. All the town did it and I'm pretty sure almost nothing got missed. Still now I tend to think 99% of the people are good also if t=something like that would not work anymore.

It's became a diffused habit to "retouch", sometime at the point to create false images and still pretend they are real. So you must also be a racist, misogynist, probably not opposed to neo-na$iz and you're probably naive enough to believe in every conspiracy theory invented by the MAGA/Q people to make you feel smarter than everyone else. Yes, good movie! In a previous reply that disappeared, I was saying that I think photographing the beauty of the world as Adams and Weston did is not wrong and still a good way to create a very positive environment. What I think is terrible is to show the ugliness as the norm, to convince people the world is bad and we are not worth and so on. I really think the most dangerous attitude is to portray crime, violence, ugliness etc. as the norm with some heroic nuance.

    Great video. I want to add a nuance to this topic: Photography, especially iconic photography always relies on a medium or media that publishes it to the masses. In dictatorships of course those photographs were staged (Communist flag raising over Berlin) or edited to support their narrative. In a democracy we (seemingly) have a free press. Free markets (should) ensure that iconic photographs will be made public for all to view. But legacy media always had other interests in mind than informing the masses. One example is that Life or another publication bought the Zapruder film of JFKs assasination. Yet, very unlike a commercial enterprise would, they just kept it hidden away, only publishing select frames. (the story of that film is too long to write it here, but it went on being shady). You mentioned X and I also went on X and got the infos. I don't think Elon Musk is some kind of hero but at least for something as big as this his claim of X being a "free speech" platform came true. It could be seen on mainstream media immediately: Trump "fell", Trump was brought of stage because "noises" irritated him. Even photos with blood on his face had text beneath saying "we don't know if he was hurt." They did what they always do: Distort the truth. They don't even care if what a video or photo clearly shows contradicts them. The point I want to make: If it weren't for X or basically a free internet where you as a citizen can choose where you want to get your information from, we'd rely on mass media and what they are willing to put on their websites and tv stations. I don't know how photo distribution works, but the most iconic photos were shot by a New York Times photographer and an AP photographer. I assume they were immediately put out in a media data base for everyone to access and purchase (just how I imagine it). Because I didn't see those pictures on NYT or AP accounts, I saw them from individuals spreading them. I am not sure if, in the old pre-internet days, such hostile media organizations would've published those photos. I think they would have kept them under seal. I can only applaud the photographers here and especially for them to work on instinct to get the "best" photos and that they didn't try to only take pictures that fit the agenda of their employer. Another point that came to my mind last night: How important photography still is in an age of countless live stream. Even if they stream at 4k the ability to capture a moment on a photo is what gave us the defining media of this attempted assassination. Even scrolling through HD live streams won't get you something as powerful as this.

  • @LuigiBarbano
    @LuigiBarbano14 күн бұрын

    Thanks, I totally agre. Years ago the media had to rely on the buyers so any important photograph was shared. Now most of te media depends on financing from governments so they publish propaganda, not matter if they have readers, they get public money anyway.

    I’m sorry. Those appear to be digital cameras so is an empty comparison. Having recently helped a friend through a new mirrorless purchase, I’ve looked at these in some detail and these are all boring, dime a dozen cameras with nothing interesting or inspiring about them. But as far as the real comparison, I haven’t seen any new film cameras from Canon, Sony or Nikon. All I see from them over recent years is more and more boring digital cameras with no soul. More automation of advanced functions, faster/better AF, more pixels. Boring stuff that’s not interesting to look at any more and doesn’t inspire or make you a better photographer.

  • @luispnrf

    @@shred3005 First "boring, dime a dozen cameras with nothing interesting or inspiring" is your opinion and, although I agree with it to some extent, it isn't a fact for many people. • @shred3005
    @shred300524 күн бұрын

    @@luispnrf sorry, I should’ve said I find those cameras boring and not even worth taking pause over as they are just evolutions of previous volume models. Same old thing but a bit newer. The reason why they are dirt cheap is they are mass market entry level cameras.. The R&D was paid for by trickle-down from more expensive cameras in the range and just simply updates in evolution of older cameras. Even if they have a new body or a new sensor these things are ultra cheap in the volumes that they are made in. Last year Canon made 1.5 million Mirrorless cameras and Sony 1.2 million.. They are purchased by people who just want cheap efficient digital camera without having to think too much. Like buying a refrigerator or washing machine or an entry level car to get around in. They are not the sort of people who would even think that film exists any more. Let alone have any thought about buying something like a Pentax 17, of which I understand the initial manufacturing run was in the thousands. 1.5 million compared to thousands? It’s a low volume niche product in a limited market. On the other hand, sensors in those entry level APS-C are cheap courtesy of the being bottom of the range with hundreds of thousands (millions?) of them cut from wafers every year. But it is comparing apples with oranges. While, both a Canon R100 and a Pentax 17 both record photos, that’s where the similarity ends. I suggest that the market for both are very different people looking for very different experiences.

  • @nikoladimitrijevic8172
    @nikoladimitrijevic817219 күн бұрын

    @@luispnrfCanon has a strategy of selling entry-level cameras at little or no profit (Pentax can't afford that) in order to lock new users into its system and they certainly succeeded with me. Now I have EOS R with several expensive lenses... mostly collecting dust. Now that's expensive, to sink a significant sum of money into something that is rarely used. Instead, analog cameras amuse me and I use them regularly. I agree that the value is a bit lower, but with this camera Pentax (Ricoh) has to cover the costs of R&D and to provide funds for the development of the following models. It's 400$ for camera and 100$ donation for development, at least as I see it. And as far as I'm concerned, that's perfectly fine :)

Focus zones at first gave me problems, I am so used to autofocus that was forgetting to change when I was really close :) Image quality - don't know yet, but soon I will know. All I know it will be like 1/2 of normal frame, so not bad. I do not think I will be printing posters, maybe I print first roll big to check quality but it will be more snapshot camera then artistic or archival tool so both prints and low resolution prints should be excellent. I think price is pretty personal, one can spent 1000 and not notice, other will turn every euro 3 times around and think if he can afford to spent it. For me 550 euro is good price for this camera. First - it is new, good quality camera. Second - to get same type of camera in same price (so Ricoh Autohalf or Olympus Pen-F) on ebay, used but pristine you need to give 1000 or more euro.

    Another interesting video - thanks Luigi. It made me wonder how much my first proper camera (an ME Super with 50mm f1.7 lens) would cost now. I was a teenager at the time and saved up and bought it in 1983. UK inflation since then means that the £120 it cost me at the time would now be roughly £510 - almost identical to the £499 that the Pentax 17 costs here. I was thinking that makes the Pentax 17 rather expensive (a 17 or a full-blown SLR for the same price?). However, then I thought that the ME Super was just churned out by the 1000s and was based on other cameras that Pentax had already released too. It simply would not have been as much effort or expense for Pentax to make it compared with building the Pentax 17 from the ground up in 2024. So, I agree with you, I think the price is reasonable and I really hope Pentax has great success with it.

I hope the 17 will go well so will be just the first step for Pentax in the second age of the analog world.

    I am with you, the pricing is fair compared to back in the day. My issue though: Compare it with another zone focus camera from back in the days, say Agfa Optima Sensor models that were built over decades from 70s onwards. It had metal body with sturdy plastic layer above. This camera is indistructable. That is what I expect from a camera that wants 550€ from me in 2024 aswell. Yet, Pentax doesn't deliver on that. Different kinds of plastic, especially cheap, thin plastic on the backside makes me wonder if this will hold up when it falls down. I have a half frame toycamera froim agfaphoto, that has cheap plastic aswell (totally different to the one back in Agfa Optima days). When that falls down, it's broken. But I only lost 40€ and not 550€.

I’m sure that back in the days when all parts of the Pentax cameras were made in Japan it would have cost much more. I think it is quite a good deal for a newly developed and unique camera. I hope to get one, mainly to enjoy, but also to support the risk-takers at Pentax/Ricoh. I always enjoy your content. Thanks!

    Beautiful and stunning images! Excellent advice! Your talk reminds me of how Chris Stevens spoke on his radio show KBHR ("K-Bear") . "Goethe's final words: "More light." Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that's been our unifying cry: "More light." Sunlight. Torchlight. Candlight. Neon. Incandescent. Lights that banish the darkness from our caves, to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators. Big floods for the night games at Soldier's field. Little tiny flashlight for those books we read under the covers when we're supposed to be asleep. Light is more than watts and footcandles. Light is metaphor. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home- Lead Thou me on! Arise, shine, for thy light has come. Light is knowledge. Light is life. Light is light." - Northern Exposure TV show (1990), Chris Stevens

    Thank you. Great quote. When I think about light as a symbol I always think about Anthem by Ayn Rand. In Italy we had this trend, still going but with less power, promoting Happy Degrowth... Sadly right now too many people consider this ability a weakness and they see AI as a god... there is even a religion based on AI, I hope is just an ironic website, but I found one trying to base a religion on AI as god. The positive side of all this is that I see many people turning around and starting to put back in charge humanity.

    Young clients I think don't care. At all. I rarely shot for money but when I do first question is when they will get photos on google photos or somewhere where they can easily access and share them. Whether it is something like first communion or an event that ends pretty private - no one cares. I do my personal "projects" on film. Either B&W for some documentary work or slides if it is more casual and I never share them online. I do show them to friends or family on prints or with projector (that is fun for kids I must say) but never online. Digital is great for everyday, fast, expensive (lots of photos) stuff like airshows, some train spotting and such stuff. As for software, I've gone Linux long time ago and while it is not perfect solution, it is better then Windows or Apple when it comes to privacy. Still takes some effort to get everything I may need or want on computer so yeah, not for everyone.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm afraid new generations will learn the hard way that privacy is important. Watching your video to decide what camera to choose. It will be my first camera, I'm a total begginer, some options I'm looking at is this Pentax KF (Bigger size but seems the most professional one and a camera that I can learn without the need to buy a new one in the future once I get to a more advanced knowledge level), Lumix G100 (Good size and newer) and Lumix G7 (cheaper option). Your video on the Pentax is very good! Gave me a good perspective on the camera.

  • @LuigiBarbano
    @LuigiBarbano2 ай бұрын

    Thanks. I'm glad I was useful. The big decision with Pentax is reflex vs mirrorless. Personally I prefer the reflex much more. My suggestion is always the same: if you have an option to rent or borrow the cameras you are considering buying and try them for few days, do it. The photo quality is now at very good levels on most of the cameras, the difference is in the use. I used Canon for a while. I liked the quality but I never felt the camera right and intuitive in my hands. I had always had to look for the various controls and never came instinctive to me. Still I consider them great cameras, just non for me. Years ago I was considering a new car, it was an Opel Insigna. Perfect on paper, I liked it but on a vacation I had one from the rental company for a couple of weeks, I liked how it handled and everything, except I always hurting myself hitting something like the trunk door or other parts of the car when I was entering it. It was incredible how we were not compatible, but I discovered that with some use. So, if you can, borrow or rent your options. This said, the KF is a very good camera.
