    You can use catch-in-focus with manual lenses - "Catch-in focus is a powerful technique that allows DSLRs to use information from the autofocus system to confirm focus even when using manual lenses" . The Pentax K3 mark iii has auto metering with manual lenses in AV and TAv modes so hopefully if there ever is a K1 mark lll it will be included.. I have had the K1 (original, bought used) for almost two years now and also absolutely love the quality of images it produces. 👍

    yes, catch in focus is great, but still focuses on the sensor position. I prefer a good focusing screen for manual focus so I can focus anywhere on the screen without worrying about having that red dot on my subject. I used the K3 mkIII not much but if I remember correctly the AV measure with manual lenses is still a trick, in the sense that stops down and measures, it doesn't have a communication of the aperture to the camera. I loved the result I had with Pentax, both the K1 mkII and the K3 mkIII, mono or color.

    Thank you. I really hope Pentax will continue strongly with Optical Viewfinders... more I use EVFs and more I dislike them, but the photographic world seems to be unified in that direction. ... but I was thinking... why I don't get some terrible disagreeing comments? I mean something to start a virtual comments war so the algorithms will push me to have a million views!! :D

    For any K1 owner id recommend to pick up the official "Magnifying eyecup O-ME53". Not only did it make the view better (to me), but it gave some extra distance between my, well face and the camera which just more comfortable. The diagonal lines in the optical viewfinder can be turned on and off: camera "menu" button -> 5th page -> the first option "viewfinder overlay".

    Great video, thanks a lot! Dear Luigi, in the KF review you said, that OVF was good for manual focusing. You didn't appreciate the K-1 II that much. Is my impression correct? After using both of them, which one was nicer in that regard? I know, that's a subjective matter and they are different formats, but let's try to answer that question. Interestingly, I have 3 APS-C Pentax DSLRs, all with glass pentaprism, and the *ist DS is the best amongst them, despite being my oldest 🙂

  • @LuigiBarbano

    @LuigiBarbano

    9 ай бұрын

    Thank you. The K1 II is better than the KF fr manual focusing. Being a full frame helps... But being the K1 the top of the gamma I would love to see the option of a focusing screen made for manual focus. With SF the trend was to create perfectly clean and transparent focusing screens. Manual focusing is usually better on screens with a little more texture. Having the K1 an interchangeable focusing screen I would love to see that option. Used to analog cameras in various format I have to say all the AF focusing screens kind of suck for manual focus... but it is all we have right now and the compromise made by Pentax is a good one, it still gives the ability to manual focus with some precision. But... I want the Hasselblad Acute Matte focusing screen experience on all my cameras!!! :D

    @ryszardtarnowski8213

    @@LuigiBarbano, thank you very much! That's right, the texture is *that feature* of good focusing screens. The _*ist DS_ has some graininess, which gives this "focus snap" feeling. Newer DSLRs are as you wrote: clean and transparent. Finally, nothing compares to my ME-Super and it's big, bright viewfinder. I can only imagine, how good could be the Hassy 😊

    in 2012-2013 it could have done some impact on market. In 2016 it was already too late, after initial boom the market was saturated quickly. And it was very soon obsoleted by D850 and later the whole new mirrorless FF family of competitors. Now in 2023 it is just niche hobby camera that is only being sold out of stock. Lens support also is very weak. It is nice camera for collectors with number of old K mount lenses who just wanted some FF body to use them. But thats about it. AF is 2012 era level, sensor from D800, interface mostly good for landscapes and some portraiture. Not an universal workhorse for everything like many other cameras with similar price. Will it be ever replaced? That is the question. Probably not. And if yes, we probably can only expect some marginal improvements, because Ricoh R&D was gutted a lot and they do not have revenue for investments, because market is much smaller now and they focused on this dead horse instead of supporting the APS-C line that used to be top. Now the FF DSLRs are dead. 645 Medium format Pentax is also dead and market overtaken by Fuji. And APS-C market for K mount is now also tiny, because others now also offer good APS-C cameras with IBIS and weather sealing which used to be main points for Pentax. Nowdays the 2021 K3III with +/- Fuji XT-3 technology level cost the same as new Fuji XT-5. And Fuji also built better lens portfolio during last decade. It will be very tough for Ricoh to survive on the market unless they rebot the thinking and start investing into R&D. But so far last 10 years were extremely poor.. and that cost them customers who left and are not coming back.

    I don't totally agree. Pentax is making cameras for photographers: reflex, great quality, no video BS. Most of all reflex cameras. Mirrorless and EVF sucks. Yes, Fuji is doing great, but it's basically a mirrorless system. I use the Xpro-2 'cause there is a good OVF option (the Pro3 has a worse OVF) but it's not a reflex camera. I still think Pentax has a good potential.

    I agree. Although you can't compare a k3-iii to xt3. Fuji is hands down better, minus ibis. For me my pentax journey ended with a completely failed low lift birthday party, i used a k3 + da* glass. The af was simply awful, borderline useless. Pentax is only good for still life photography and even there you'll have to 2nd check every image.

  • @LuigiBarbano

    @@sulev111 I found the K3-III very precise and fast enough as autofocus. I use Fuji and like the image quality, but the EVF for me is a big no. I really dislike EVFs... The greatest point for me in Pentax is the reflex OVF. But I was used to do weddings with manual focus Hasselblad V so still now most of the time I use manual focus to be faster and most of all have the focus where I want in the image without having to move the focus point or reframe...

    Have you ever held on in your hands let alone used one? I doubt it. You seem to be over concerned with spec. sheets and measurebating. Is it for everyone? Of course not, but the images you get from it are beautiful. It is beautifully engineered and built. It works wonderfully with legacy K mount glass. The ergonomics are marvellous, unlike many of the plastic blobs the major manufacturers have tried to thrust down our throats for so long. It has lots of hidden features. Apart for fast moving erratic subjects the AF is fine. So granted it's not a sports or action camera compared to what is available now. Would I want to earn my living from it? Probably not but then again I don't have to. I am an unashamed enthusiastic hobbyist and there is nothing wrong with that. Oh and BTW, I don't agree with LB about mirrorless designs. I do like my Fujifilm cameras. I have nothing against mirrorless designs necessarily. I think when Panasonic introduced the G1 way back when it was a breath of fresh air. It might be old tech, it might be niche (ok it is niche) but using a DSLR these days is a bit like using a RF Leica in the days of film. It might not make entire sense but there is still something to be said for it even if it is just the user's pleasure of the experience.
