My mother remembers police boxes. She also remembers 'AA Call boxes', these were black and yellow and were for drivers to phone for help, should they break down. Another type of blue box was operated by the RAC for the same reason.

That’s Sheffield. There is an old police call box outside the town hall in the city centre. But it’s a different design, it’s not blue, and doesn’t just randomly appear out of nowhere.

I want the cross over where the TARDIS gets innocently stolen by Bill and Ted. Or the doctor finds bill and ted a phone booth and thinks that his tardis has been vandalized. They could team up Doctor could chastise them for copying his car and doing a bad job of it. And bill and ted can point out that they saved the earth with that knock off using the power of rock n roll.

In my head canon, the TARDIS just likes being a police box and so deliberately sabotages all attempts to fix the chameleon circuit. Either that or being aware of all time and space, she knows how important a symbol the police box would come to be long before the Doctor ever did.

It says right there on the sign "Police Public Call Box," so even if you've never seen or heard of one before, you can pretty much already guess what its purpose is just from reading the sign, & as it says Police on it, you'd most likely get the impression that perhaps you shouldn't mess around with it.

If I recall correctly Matt Smith had an Christmas special taking place in the 40s. Police Boxes were still common place, so he went into an actual Police Box by mistake instead of the TARDIS.
