    If we replicate this in a bigger set, and put this original in the middle, can we get a 3 speed gearbox?

    So, it's more like a clutch slipping than a gearbox, since a gearbox is supposed to increase torque wile on lower gears, not the opposite like here where power is getting lost at lower speeds...still, interesting solution to avoid stalling the motor

    Sadly very inefficient. In low gear a lot of energy get's lost in the transmission, resulting in only a very slight increase in torque at the output compared to high gear.

    Hi. I found this video because my son's 42114 is not functioning properly, so i searched about differentials. When it was new, the 42114 could go over obstacles easily. After about 1 month time, it cannot go over even a pen. I checked the gears but couldn't notice anything wrong. Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Should I reassemble the whole hauler and try again? He is quite frustrated, and so am I. Thanks for reading, and I hope you can give me some insights. Thank you!

    I have watched this (and similar) video(s) multiple times and I still don't understand a part of it. I do understand how the gearbox works but do you actually get more torque? I am starting to become confused at 3:13. If you have the driving force in the engine and you simply divide it in two pathways why does it get more powerful when it goes through only one of the pathways? Is it because you have a high gear ratio in the second pathway (lower path at 3:55) and when you "turn it off" via the clutch you get the full in the first pathway? As a thought experiment, if both pathways have the same gear ratio, it wouldn't increase the torque, would it? And some of the power goes into the clutch as friction, doesn't it get worn out very quickly, have you used it in an extended period of time? Thanks!

    It's funny to me how I saw this Video years ago and when I needed this I was able to find it so easy! It's an amazing Idea for a CVT and this never really left my mind. I wonder if the parts can be changed out to get more torque since I would guess that this example slips easily because of the parts used.

    this is NOT how torsen/helical LSDs work there are no wormgear/wheel pairs in a torsen/helical diff, no gear pair in those diffs approaches anywhere near the gear ratio a worm wheel/gear pair has Torsen/Helical diffs work because the helical cut gears (which look vaguely like a worm gear in that it's spiral-y but not nearly as aggresively) generate significant axial load and thus friction against the differential housing when load is applied

    take care: in an open differential the torque provided by the power unit is always distributed 50% per side in every (but really in every) condition, even if a single wheel is slower, blocked or turns in the opposite direction.

    So, if you were to put one of these gearboxes on both the front and rear axles, and then a third one to split between the axles as a transfer gearbox, you could theoretically put all the torque into a single wheel if the other three were slipping? Sounds like the ultimate 4WD to me.

  • @pontiacg445
    @pontiacg4457 ай бұрын

    You don't often see torsen diffs used in off road vehicles because they only transfer torque if there is torque, so if you lift a wheel and it takes hardly any torque to turn it, that's all the torque you'll get out of it. In essence, zero times the torsen torque bias is still zero. This video isn't a good representation of a torsen diff. More likely to find one on a roadgoing car.

  • @Simple_But_Expensive
    @Simple_But_Expensive7 ай бұрын

    @@pontiacg445 I thought the point of a torsen was that it diverted the torque from the wheel with no traction into the wheel with traction. Doesn’t this mean that if one wheel is in the air all the torque will be diverted to the one still on the ground? If not, I guess I don’t understand how it works.

  • @pontiacg445
    @pontiacg4457 ай бұрын

    @@Simple_But_Expensive It diverts torque from the low traction wheel to the wheel with more traction. If the low traction wheel has zero torque, then the other wheel gets zero. A car will generally spin the inside tire in a corner with an open differential due to weight transfer, a torsen will shift and multiply some of the torque it took to slip that inside wheel to the outside wheel. This video is not a good explanation, at all. Wikipedia is better.

    Not so big lost. Otherwise it cant work. But the weight of the whole cat is ctirical. If is heavier you need to use two cluthes in parallel to move the treshold higher.

    This is wrong idea because friction on lower gear don,t make output stronger, low velosity only.

  • @ferdoreznik
    @ferdoreznik11 ай бұрын

    No, lower speed means automatically higher torque minus the resistance in friction. Check please my another video where I made switch to fix the higher speed in this gearbox without dropping to low speed. There you can see that in low speed it has really more power than in case of high speed. There is also small car climbing the hill. It really works.

    This could be an excellent concept for a practical CVT in a car if: 1) a hydraulic torque converter is used instead of a clutch, and 2) a reverse gear is included.

    From one frontier its a true automatic gearbox, but the target of gearbox is with decreasing rotation speed increase strong of rotation. The white gear is getting part of the rotation moment. That means, that you simply decreasing rotation speed, without chanching rotation strong. P. S. sorry for my english and commas. I am from Russia

    This is the basic principle of the Voith DIWA automatic gearboxes mainly used in city buses. While stationary and at the beginning of acceleration, the engine's torque is fully transferred through the (internal, it's not seperate as with most gearboxes) torque converter and the lower the speed difference between engine and gearbox output the more this shifts towards the parallely operating fully mechanical 1st gear. At a certain speed difference the torque converter will then become almost completely needless and the fully mechanic 2nd gear is engaged. With this gearbox type, the torque converter is only functional in 1st gear and is disabled from 2nd (of the 2, 3 or 4 gears) onwards, but is used as a retarder, just to have mentioned this.

    Absolutely love they way you visualize these things. But one question: Does the lower gear apply more torque here? I guess, yes, because less output speed, automatically means more torque with the same motor, right? I know, it's a known technique, but still ingenious to do it in LEGO.

  • @tazargroups.r.o.2152
    @tazargroups.r.o.2152 Жыл бұрын

    Hi Shabazza, exactly. Lower speed means higher torque, minus the loss in friction clutch. Many people does not understand this. Please watch my video where I compare fixed vs this gearbox. There is also simple formula showing the output torque..

    I watched about 5 or 6 differential explanation videos and yours was the first with proper explanation and showcase what actually happens and how. I was already aware what normal differntial does. But I was not aware, that a slipping wheel will render the other wheel with no torque and that a torsen differential solves this. Nice.
