Medical Millennial

Welcome to my channel!

My name is Gerran, and I will be posting weekly videos documenting my experience as a pre-med student.

My goal is to provide a platform that will allow open discussion amongst my subscribers and viewers to voice their pre-med concerns, struggles, successes, etc. Because I am not a straight-A student, and I am a non-traditional applicant, I thought it would be helpful to document my experience, since I know there are thousands of other people in my exact position. My ultimate goal is show that you can still be a successful doctor without having a 4.0 GPA or a 99% MCAT score. All of this hoping I get into medical school!

You guys will all be able to follow my journey first hand!

Topics will be as follows:

-Why I chose to pursue this career
-Pre-med struggles (emotional and professional)
-Weekly or biweekly vlogs
-My extracurriculars
-My experience at Harvard's Post-Bacc Pre-Med program
-My stats (GPA, MCAT, etc)

Please subscribe!!!

    Hi! Thank you for your great video! Is the premedical program like a degree per say like is there a graduation to attend or is it really like a refresher program? Also, did they say or you do recommend putting this on resume? Thanks !

    Thanks for the comment! You don't get a degree at the end unfortunately... but you do become a member of the Harvard Alumni Assocation (at least when I graduated a few years ago). Personally, I do put it on my resume under my "education" section! Hope that helps! Also, there is no graduation I don't think... but I'm not sure what they're doing now since program directors changed. Also, I finished the program during the beggining of the pandemic, so there were no graduations anywhere!

    Hi- hope you are doing great! I have a few questions: 1. In your other video you mentioned that you were working full time while in a post bacc program. Were you already residing in cambridge/boston area and working there before even starting a program? Or did you move there? 2. Ive noticed that most postbacc programs are 1-2 yr programs. Im curious if thats really an enough time for postbacc students to prepare everything and have all those stats (volunteer hours, shadowing, mcat, research, etc)?? Like most traditional students spend 4 or even more years to build up those stats and im not sure if it is even possible for nontrads..😢 Thanks!!

    I am 50 and just had my tonsils out 5 days ago. I had a coke right after surgery and whole wheat toast with peanut butter when I went home later that day. Eat a ton of ice chips. Humidifier really helped as I live in a dry climate. Sleep in a recliner verses bed...that helped a ton. I bought my recliner right before my surgery and don't know what I would have done without it. I couldn't drink any juice as it hurt too much. But could have the coke and toast so go with what you think will work for you. Everyone is different. My pain has never been miserable. Keep up on your pain meds and eat ice chips constantly. I also ate a lot of pudding. So glad I won't have tonsil stones anymore!

    I just got mine out Tuesday morning so I'm saying today is really day 5 of recovery and man I was prepared for way worse than I've gotten thus far. I had both my tonsils removed and my tongue tie cut during my surgery and the tongue tie has been a worse recovery than the tonsils. I was fully prepared for the first week to be hell but the only bad part has been the diet and not being able to eat everything I want.

    Hey! Thanks for the great videos on the HES program. I am about to apply this upcoming cycle. I am terrified because I was a psych major in undergrad and haven't touched a real science course in over 10 years. I heard that the chemistry and physics instructors do not have a traditional teaching style. How did you feel about this and how did you end up studying to achieve your success? Lastly, do you receive an actual degree from this program and are considered an alumni of the University? I'm not looking at this program for that reason, but it would be a cool added bonus! Thanks!

  • @medicalmillennial5807
    @medicalmillennial5807 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment! I'm the glad the video could help in any way! I suppose in a sense the teaching might be considered unconventional, but that's not something I have heard! I really liked the teaching style. Personally, I think the professors there, especially the chem professors, have teaching down to a science (no pun intended). The way they break down chem and physics was super helpful and helped me learn a lot. The way they taught physics has also helped me a lot in med school so far. In terms of how I studied, I studied mostly by doing practice problems. They emphasize this style a lot and it seems to have worked really worked well for me. In terms of a degree, you do not get a degree. I believe it's considered a "certificate" program, but you don't actually get a certificate. However, you are considered a member of the Harvard Alumni Association when you graduate. I think all these details are on the program website as well. Hope this helps! Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any other questions

Haha now you can use PC architecture as a helpful metaphor for a&p topics, with patients who are computer geeks :D I like to refer to my bilateral salpingectomy & endometrial ablation as "I tore out the SATA cables & fried the motherboard"! 😆 (I suppose the processor specifically is the better analogous match to the endometrium, & the motherboard better matches to the whole uterus -- but obviously in this context the "motherboard" pun is too good to resist lol)

  • @medicalmillennial5807

    Thanks for the comment! Are you talking about just the prereqs or an entire degree? I suppose either way, it can definitely be done online, but people have different opinions as to how online classes (particularly online labs) look to admissions committee members. Typically, online classes and labs tend to be less rigorous and are usually offered by less "prestigious" schools (for lack of a better word), so I would do live classes if it's at all possible. That being said, I've heard a few stories (mainly on r/premed reddit page) of people getting accepted with online classes. Additionally, online classes seem to be becoming much more acceptable these days due to the covid-19 pandemic. Hope that helps!

    Hey, hows it going? Are you accepted into a Medical school yet? I've seen your Harvard-extension school video. I was wondering if you had any luck making it into a medical school. I know in the comments you said you were accepted, but your other videos are talking about 2nd round applications and things of that nature. Are you looking to get multiple acceptances and have actually been accepted to one already? Thanks. I'm a Biochemistry Major, but I'm going Pharmacy. I think for my self, it would be hard to reach a 3.6+ GPA for the acceptance rates of med, and 3.0+ is more my area lol. Engineering Calculus is seriously hard, and it's wrecking GPA's across the boards. My path is Bio 181/182 chem 113/116, Chem 233/237, 234/238 with Phys 111/113 Usual Gen eds of English, 4 humanities and Statistics 231 with A&P 1 with psych and soc. I know a ton of people who regret becoming pharmacists, so I'm still kind of browsing my options. I just Don't know if first go around will be enough. Post-Bac may be in my future. I've done most of these at community, 47 credits. Coming in with a 3.0 to my University, so I'll need A's to ramp it up. I wasn't ever the best student when it came to studying or anything like that with working full time and having 2 kids/wife. I'm doing it different at university though so we will see! I really hope you reach your dreams, something like 3% complete the extension school bachelor and roughly 7% complete the Post-Bac. It's honorable to go to the extension school and don't think it's not. Some kids weren't fortunate to have the guidance or money at a young age needed for The College of Harvard, and the Extension school is one epic opportunity.

    Could see you being particularly great at PM&R or cardiology for sure! There's a depth of compassion and a realness/calm that are necessary in any area of medicine of course, but I'd argue that those two fields require more of each/more consistency with each than most other specialties, and you've got those traits in spades :) I always wondered how it wasn't more common in personal trainer culture to want to help people with interesting pathologies, rather than just helping healthy people get even more healthy ... Like yeah that's also good work to do, but just seems so much more boring to me 😂 Saw the same thing in the massage community, although to a lesser extent of course. But I guess that's the nature of those of us who ultimately get drawn to medicine haha. Really enjoying these videos, hope your apps have been going well!

    This was really helpfully illuminating! I dig your objectivity and clarity. Thanks so much for your videos about this. You're right, there's hardly anything about the program on KZread at all. I just learned about it a few days ago, and realized it's a perfect solution to some of my concerns about affording all these courses since I wouldn't have to cram them into my undergrad, and I've wanted to spend a couple years somewhere new anyway to get a basis for comparison in a different medical system and public health scene before coming back to my hometown, so I'm really stoked to be able to aim for this opportunity. I really appreciate all these insights and I hope your journey onward into med school has been going well! I subbed and I'm stoked to learn more from you (especially since I saw from a video I watchlisted that you were a PT! I did medical massage work for a while, and I feel like manual medicine people speak an entirely different language sometimes from the dominant western-biomed paradigm lol, and it seems like most medtuber content comes from more traditional students).

  • @medicalmillennial5807
    @medicalmillennial58072 жыл бұрын

    Hey man, thanks for this thoughtful comment! I really appreciate it because I put a lot of work into both of those videos. Yeah I couldn't believe there were no videos about the program on KZread! Do you plan on moving to Boston? And yes you are absolutely correct about the difference in perspective between people trained in manual medicine vs the traditional pre-medical route. I think the general public is slowly becoming aware of the importance of both perspectives, but it will take a lot more work for other medical perspectives to be widely accepted! That's really cool that you were a medical massage therapist. I have a lot of respect for that art! Massage therapy is very cool, and extremely under-appreciated.

    @@medicalmillennial5807 Hey thank YOU for all the work you put in! Yeah I figure on moving to Boston for a couple of years if I make the program, and if I end up not going that route then I'd at least like to travel there for a while. Long-term I'm anchored in Colorado and love it here, just have also wanted for ages to go spend some time in the big old northeast cities for a bit lol, so it'd be a nice fit to do it in this context. :D Thanks haha I'm biased obviously but I totally agree about massage being underrated, and manual medicine in general. Absolutely planning to go the DO route. I worry about palpation fading out of baseline medical training over time, though the more into medtube I get and the more hip I get to the paradigm shifts going on in med schools these days, the more optimistic I become! Now if only we could get non-manually-inclined minds to accept the significance of observational evidence based on things they can't perceive themselves without months of skill development and just have to trust us about ... XD (I could rant for hours about the underrated ameliorative potential of the sacrotuberous ligaments for many ortho/pain problems lol, and I'm so tired of old-school types acting like claims about these things are made up just because they can't feel the changes with their own hands that I and the client can feel.) But more and more people from fields like ours are going into medicine all the time, so it's exciting seeing that discourse evolve :) I'm doing my undergrad in healthcare informatics and generally have a passion for data science so I'm hoping to make use of improved research aggregation and analysis methods over time to lend statistical support to topics like this which have previously been difficult to quantify.

    Well Boston's a great city, I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you end up moving! Especially Cambridge - it really is a beautiful city. If you're from Colorado, it'll probably be a cool experience seeing all the American revolutionary history here! I've never been to Colorado, but it looks beautiful as well. I'd really like to visit one day. Yeah I worry about that too, but it seems like the younger generation is open to manual medicine, so that bodes well for us! Even if I don't end up attending a DO school, I'd like to incorporate as much manual medicine as possible into my practice. In terms of getting others to accept the significance/potential of manual medicine, I think it will happen with time and research in that area grows and as people open their minds a bit! Data science is cool, man. I work in research right now (specifically in data science) and it is definitely a cool field! You have a very noble goal in terms of hoping to lend statistical support to the topics we have been discussing. Although those methods of medicine are inherently difficult to quantify (as you mentioned) I'm sure there is a way to do it - and once someone like you figures out the best way(s) to do so, I'm sure we will see an increase in its public acceptance. You sound like you'd be a GREAT candidate for medical school (and DO school, specifically) if you decide to go that route! Keep me updated, man!

    @@medicalmillennial5807 Aww thank you so much for the encouragement! It means a lot. I've always struggled academically (I just score very well on tests, and that plus being an articulate white girl gets one passed along too easily in school despite failing grades/brutal ADHD lol) so I figure I'll have to lean hard into "I'm so, uh ... interesting!" to compete, since my GPA probably won't be the shiniest. 😆 _{medical Spanish studying intensifies}_ I think, thankfully, this is the perfect time to be an odd duck going into medicine with the agenda of helping accelerate positive change, both in practice-specific paradigms like manual medicine and also in the more overarching ideological shifts we're seeing. (I'm absolutely nuts about underserved pops/upstreamism/public health in general, so I've loved watching that scene evolve over the last 15ish years since I began paying proper attention.) Love how you're helping to bring more forward-thinkingness to the field with your background and ideas! It's so exciting to start connecting with peers, especially fellow non-trad students, and get a feel for how the med student experience is so much less homogenous and unquestioning than it seems like it used to be. (Or maybe it was always this awesome and progressive and I just never knew it lol, but either way, I'm delighted.) If you've got time and inclination to elaborate, I'd love to hear more about the research you're doing, inasmuch as you're allowed to share! And if you'd like to/if it'd be easier to chat in another venue lmk, would be fun to pick your brain over on Discord or whatever. And yeah Colorado is amazing, we've all got our heads up our asses a bit about it being so magnetically wonderful but our snobbery does have a strong factual basis haha XD Be careful visiting, we're notorious for people traveling through once and falling in love and deciding they have to move here -- but you'll probably be more armored than most against that phenomenon since it's so lovely out northeast as well, from what I hear and all the pics I've seen! Can't wait to see it firsthand one of these days :)

    No problem! Well I've always had to work very hard for my grades as well, so you aren't alone. I'm sure you are very interesting! Everyone has something unique to offer... I truly believe that. Everyone has had different experiences and has different goals/dreams. The diversity statement aspect of the med school application is difficult for everyone, I think. But I think it's because most pre-med's don't realize how unique they truly are, and because most of us have no self-confidence in terms of our application! I think you're definitely right about now being a great time to go into medicine! We need more people with a holistic mindset focused on underserved populations and public health. I think those goals will make your application very interesting - particularly in terms of DO schools. And I totally agree about networking and getting connected to others who have some awesome, ambitious dreams! I love meeting people that dream big. I think over the past 20 years the pre-med/med student experience has definitely changed, at least based on my personal experience and conversations I've had! And thanks for saying that, I'll definitely post more vids about the research I'm doing if you/others are interested! I've thought about going into more detail about that stuff, but I'm really waiting until I start school to start making videos like that... so I'd expect a more consistent upload schedule starting in May/June or so. In terms of connecting on other venues, I'm happy to chat or answer any questions! PM me if you want my Discord name or email! Haha, I've heard that many people love it out there! I had a buddy from high school move out there recently. I will def visit one day! But yes the Northeast is very beautiful. I love the history and old architecture here. And the beaches here are extremely beautiful during the summer! Especially the islands the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket!

    Hi again. Sorry if this is a random question. Did you take biology with Dr. Roehrig? If so, can you comment on your experience in the class? I have heard mixed reviews and am considering taking bio elsewhere. Thanks!

  • @medicalmillennial5807

    No problem! I did take Biology with Dr. Roehrig. In terms of course difficulty, she will be very honest with you in stating that the class is a lot of work, and fairly difficult. However, I feel that her class prepared me BY FAR the most for medical school. She is an excellent teacher and honestly cares about the quality of her students education (which is quite rare these day). She has plenty of office hours and is very accessible. If you are willing to put the work in, you can get a good grade. Personally, I think you'd be doing yourself an long-term disservice by taking the course elsewhere. You will truly "learn how to learn" in her class. She was one my favorite professors in the program. That being said, everyone's situation is different, and maybe you already have your study habits down and just need a "guaranteed" A in bio, which I get!

    I wrote the casper exam last year and was guided that quality of answers matter over the quantity and that you are penalized for poorly written answers. I wrote the casper as per the guidance and didn't do well. I focused on putting down well thought out answers for 2 out 3 questions for each scenario instead of writing a mediocre answer for all 3 questions in each scenario. My question to you is whether quality over quantity is really the way to perform in casper? Is it important to answer each question? I have an exam coming up and I am trying to avoid making same mistake. Your guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hey there, thanks for the comment! Obviously I'm not professional, but my opinion is that it's mainly about quality. However, it's not your grammer or eloquently written sentences that matters. It's purely the intention and overall idea of what you are trying to communicate. I would do your best to get all of your thoughts out as quickly as possible without focusing too much on grammer or sentence structure - as long as someone reading it can understand what you are trying to communicate. If you do that, I would think that you should have enough time answer all three. Maybe do a few more practice tests using thay technique! Hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for making this video. I was stumped over a few post-bac programs and your video helped me decide which program to choose! While you listed great points regarding the program, were there any downfalls or parts you didn't like? I'm super happy to hear they help prepare with the MCAT process (I noticed their website outlines it), but I wasn't sure how focused it would be. Does the program provide any assistance to those that have ADHD, or other disabilities such as extended time for exams? I noticed that they have an individualized advisor, which is amazing! Did you find it easy to talk to professors and build a good relationship with peers and professors?

  • @medicalmillennial5807
    @medicalmillennial58072 жыл бұрын

    Hey there! No problem at all, so glad it helped! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Honestly, there weren't really any downfalls at all. The only thing that comes to mind is that they do not require two semesters of organic chemistry, which can be a problem I have run into a few times when applying to med schools, because many still require two semesters. So you might end up having to take Orgo II and Statistics over the summer or something. Other than that, nothing comes to mind! As far as the ADHD goes, I don't know for sure (so don't hold me to this) but if I remember correctly, I do believe that people with certain disabilities were offered extended exam time. I would call and find out just to be sure! And for your last question, yes absolutely. It was very easy to talk to the professors and build good relationships with peers. Granted, I also was in the program pre-COVID for the most part, but I would say there are still plenty of opportunities for that even online. And about the advising - so your advisor will likely be the director of the program, who is great. But you do have to make the effort to reach out to them on your own and seek help/guidance as you need it. They are there to basically just point you in the right direction. All great questions, and thank you! Hope this helps! Sorry for the delayed response... I've been very busy with applications!

    Hi, and thank you for the comment! Yeah so since every class is offered only once a week (generally) each lecture has about 70 people in it (if I had to estimate). However, labs are only 20-25 people and every class offers review sessions and small group learning opportunities. So each course is much more than just the lecture. There is lecture, weekly review, small group learning, and then labs, and office hours if you want to attend
