  And there it is again, the "dictatorship of fun", why should learning a language be fun? Is it even realistic to impose that expectation upon an endeavor that entails mechanic spaced repetition, confusion, memorization, social anxiety, drill after drill? But why? "Fun" can be assessed. I'm having a hard time imagining "fun" being a valid assessment criterium for language proficiency at the Defense Language Institute, or for trying to survive in a hostile environment like jail, enemy lines, homelessness, etc.

  We actually mentioned that a system is even more important than motivation/passion/fun, cause a system keeps you consistent. I do think that if you have fun, it will be easier to stay consistent though. I remember I was quite bad at history in school, cause the method used was so boring, it was just about learning by heart. I studied and passed cause I had to, but I am sure if it had been taught differently, I would have enjoyed it AND would have had better grades. Later in life I started enjoying history when reading historical novels and felt motivated to find out more. The same happens to me with exercising, if I find a way to enjoy it, I will stay a lot more consistent than if I force myself to do it "cause I have to" or "cause it is good for my health". I would argue that most polyglots do have fun when learning cause... what is the point of spending so many hours on something you don't enjoy?

  You have to read Gabriel's whole book to understand his approach. Just listening to a TED talk isn't good enough. SRS is used by heavily in disciplines that require ingesting large amounts of information, like medicine and the law. Hardly anyone argues against its effectiveness. He employs SRS in a unique way, but it's not his whole program by any means.

Ce qui m’a frappé de coup, c’était la fluidité, et surtout ta prononciation qui est énormément améliorée depuis la dernière vidéo de toi en français que j’avais regardé (il y a quelque temps). Je suis anglophone de naissance - mais d’après moi, ta prononciation et ta fluiditée en français maintenant “sonne” comme native d’un pays francophone. C’est clair que lire des bouquins en français aide - mais je suis sûr que travailler dans un emploi où tu utilise français de façon quotidienne aide encore plus. Félicitations! - :)

  Laura , tu es fascinante !!! Comment peut-on parler plusieurs langues comme tu le fais avec un accent remarquable et un vocabulaire énorme !!! On dit que pour parler une langue , il faut 4000 mots , mais toi , j' ai l'impression que tu dors et tu rêves dans les livres . J' ai appris le latin et le grec , ainsi j' ai pu apprendre le catalan et le castillan . Même pour l' allemand , cela m' a beaucoup aidé . Mais toi , as tu vécu en France et combien d' années ? Phonétiquement " Dès gibt doch net , so e mädel " Pardon aux bavarois , mais je ne sais pas l'écrire en bayerisch ! Chaque région a son accent , et on traîne à ses chaussures un peu de notre terre . Un berlinois , un jour, m'a pris pour un franconien , mais un franconien , bien sûr n'est pas dupe . Je continue à te suivre en catalan . Fins aviat

  Alors je n'ai jamais vécu en France, mais j'ai travaillé dans quatre langues (incluant le français) pendant des années. J'ai encore un fort accent parfois et je me trompe avec les pluriels par exemple hehehe Mais je suis contente de pouvoir communiquer sans problème 😌

  Da italiano riesco a seguire tutto, la cosa non mi stupisce, la cosa interessante sarebbe fare un video con qualcuno che parla dei dialetti italiani, mi spiego meglio, io vengo da una piccola città dell'est della Lombardia e percepisco una vicinanza incredibile, dal punto di vista fonetico con il dialetto della mia zona. A volte più con l'occitano, altre con il Catalano. Sarebbe interessante capire quanto una persona occitana e/o catalana riesca a cogliere da un discorso fatto completamente in un dialetto come il mio. E poi magari anche con qualche dialetto del Sud Italia.

  I’m using it for Spanish and I love it actually. I feel like I’m making real gains. But that’s for Spanish. There’s not a lot of content for Mexican Spanish but what it does have is pretty good.

  Mon français n'è pas bon, quindi non sono in grado di lasciare un commento in quella lingua. Ma devo dire che l'italiano e il francese sono le due lingue che mi piacciono di più. Per quanto riguarda leggere ho veramente bisogno di cercare qualche libro in italiano. Come già ho detto in un altro video, l'italiano è la lingua che imparo in questo momento.   Puc comprendre i aceptar tot es que dius , pero hi ha dues sortes d' inteligencia : inteligencia syntetica i inteligencia analytica . Crec que tu tens una inteligencia syntetica i , aixi , per tu , la metode natural es molt be . Pero hi ha altres persones que necesiten gramaria per parlar i comprendre . Fins 4 o 5 anys un nen aprend amb mimetisme . Si t' interesa puc parlar de diferentes memories ( hi ha al menys 4 ) . Tot es que dius es molt interessant . bravo !

  I want to qualify thinking. I taught English and French at university and have studied nine languages to a range of levels, from beginner to fluency. I found Gabriel Wyner's take very fresh. Personally, I use a mixture of Krashen-style comprehensive input, lots of speaking from the start via Tandem, iTalki and events. I also do storylearning and acquisition through speaking to people with magazines. One of the things Gabriel Wyner discusses in his book completely correlates with what you say about the emotional aspect of language learning (which is essential). Unlike most Anki users, he wants us to connect with images and think in the language rather than through translation, which is excellent advice. The only problem is that making his style of flashcards in Anki is extremely time-consuming and laborious. The app he has developed to circumvent this cuts out a lot of time, but it's still a bit long to use. Another point he makes that resonates is not learning grammar through exercises, but rather through analysis of model sentences. I love grammar, but since tailoring my approach to this method, I get on much better with learning grammar rather than laboriously studying case tables and irregular conjugation books. At the end of the day, language learning is a deeply personal journey, but emotional connection is key and I do think his method addresses this.

  Ich habe vergessen ! Wenn ich in Ober Bayern bin , habe ich sehr gern ins Gebirge zu fahren und essen Leber Käse , ein Kaiser Schmarrn und natürlich dazu ein gutes Weiss Bier . Das alles schmekt mir ganz prima ! Ich vergesse manchmal dass ich ein franzose bin mit einer catalanische Ursprung ...
