Hello, I'm Jim, an Englishman living in Georgia (საქართველო) , the country not the state. Since 20 September 2020, this channel is primarily for longform videos related to books: reviews, hauls, TBRs, readathons etc...
My main longform content will be talking about books & reading & stuff and engaging with the Booktube community.
I have loved reading from an early age, this channel relates to my love of reading and bookish stuff.
Usually I put Booktube videos out on Sundays and Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 8pm Tbilisi time, 5pm UK time, noon Eastern, 9am Pacific. I post one minute reviews of the books I read.
With shorts I am experimenting with different random subjects like urban fishing, the Tbilisi metro, random books from the shelf, 360 degree views of Tbilisi. Shorts might be posted any time.

    Fascinating. Does it seem as though a lot of books lately write all of the older men as grumpy? My son enjoys speaking to the elderly in public. They seem to gravitate towards him for assistance. =) And he enjoys talking with them because they can actually have a better conversation than his peers. The character of this book sounds as though he would have been close to the age of my grandfather if he were in the Korean War. Great one minute review Jim. 👍👍

    Sheldon Horowitz is 82 in this novel. I really don't see a lot of older men in books, Mr Contreras in the Sara Paretsky novels is a ww2 veteran in his 90s and looking out for V I Warshawski, he can sometimes be grumpy. Most protagonists tend to be in their 30s or 40s in the novels I read even if the writer is much older.

    It's on my TBR! I've heard her books are a bit stream of consciousness which is hard for me to get along with sometimes. What are your thoughts on the writing style?

  • @jimsbooksreadingandstuff
    @jimsbooksreadingandstuff5 күн бұрын

    This is different to her fiction, this is non-fiction. It was taken from a couple of speeches delivered to women's colleges in Cambridge in 1928. It looks at the difficulties facing women in the arts. Before Woolf's time women had very few resources to dedicate themselves to the arts. Also 19th century female writers often hid behind male pseudonyms like George Eliot, George Sand and Ellis Bell (Emile Bronte) because of the prejudice against women publishing books. The style of this book is different to her fiction and it is an interesting read. In her fiction, I've read Orlando and Mrs Dalloway, the stream of consciousness in her fiction takes a while to adapt to but it is not as difficult as Joyce or Faulkner.

    @@BookZealots There are public libraries with some books in English. When I lived in a different part of the city I used a library but not recently. I'm more interested in the reading than the book, so I'm not too bothered about not actually owning the e-book. With NetGalley the eARCs are only accessible for a limited period of time, around 50 days, if I were more tech savvy, I might figure out a way to keep them permanently.

    @jimsbooksreadingandstuff I completely agree~! If you do read more of BLEACH, I would appreciate you letting me know your thoughts ~ it's always fun for me to hear people's opinions on it, especially first-time readers :) As for recommendations, I would say MONSTER by Naoki Urasawa if you're into crime/thriller, about morally conflicted neurosurgeon, it's really well written; VAGABOND by Takeaiko Inoue ~ it's about samurais, very realistic art; BLOOD ON THE TRACKS by Shuzo Oshimi~ psychological, mother sends chills down my spine; NANA by Ai Yazawa ~ coming of age story of two girls moving to Tokio, BERSERK by Kentarou Miura ~ this is a dark fantasy with lots of demons & absolutely stunning and very detailed artwork, very grusome, one of the best written villans I came across (this one is actually my 2nd favourite manga after BLEACH) ~ tried to pick stories with more mature themes/characters :) Even though I prefer reading manga physically, since it can be quite expensive (as it's rarely "one and done" type of read and there are multiple volumes involved) I tend to check the series online first~ if they catch my attention then I commit to purchasing the copies for my library :) Of course, there is no pressure, but if you end up trying any of my recommendations, I would love to hear about it as well~ Cheers from Poland :)
