Thank you for posting this. Im going to be testing a Boron vitamin from amazon with this test. Crush up a pill into water and dilute thru different ratios. If im getting this right ill use a fuel stove methanol and mix with tumeric to create my yellow dye. if i see a colour change ill know im dealing with sugar pills like some reviews have stated.

He mentioned that if we don't have access to alumina we can also use cornstarch or talcum powder. So can I use just about any type/brand of cornstarch or talcum powder or do I have to look for something specific? And can I just use it directly or is there some sort of process before? Hoping for a clear answer (I need to do this for a school project)

Somewhere floating around the internet was a wiki of the sources of chemicals that could commonly be found in hardware stores that IIRC was related to the book. Does anyone by chance remember it?

Some points: Need to specify acid strength more tightly than "concentrated". How about DENSITY. Or %. Do mention developing pulmonary edema from NOx exposure. Doing this type of reaction indoors can damn well kill you and you'll not know how badly you screwed up for hours after your exposure. Drowning from your acid fume burned lungs filling with fluids is a NASTY, slow way to die. "Guncotton" isn't what you were making here. Acid concentration and reaction time were not sufficient. "Pyrocellulose", maybe. "Nittocellulose" possibly. These are actual technical terms, related to how thoroughly the cellulose has been nitrated, freaking look it up. Occluded acid inside the NC fibers is rather hard to remove and will cause your (somewhat) nitrated cellulose to degrade, off gas and possibly auto ignite if stored. It takes a LOT more washings (ideally including BOILING in several of these wadhings)to remove as much acid as possible to begin with- And generally, impregnation with stabilizing chemicals after all those washings to allow safe storage. Urea, diphenylamine, centralites & etc. are all good things to know about. Screw nitrating cotton balls with their fat, hard to wash fibers. Use the thinnest, purest non scented toilet or tissue paper you can find instead, run it in a blender during an early rinse stage to break it up into finest particles you can too, the shorter the cellulose fibers, the more thoroughly you can wash out the acids.

Amazingly simple method to get cheap useful dilute analytical grade HCl, simply genius! Not much work to do this, even if it takes a fairly long time for diffusion to complete. Perhaps some wicks in the raw acid could increase evaporation area and speed up the process somewhat, glass wool or simply rock wool or something could work?

I would have thought that you'd want to chill the acid+cotton mixture during the nitration to prevent oxidation/runaway nitration. Usually when nitrating organic compounds you should NOT see nearly so much NO2 being evolved as it indicates that side-reactions are happening at a high rate (in this case, decomposition of the HNO3). Was the intent here to convert almost all of the cellulose to nitrocellulose or just a small portion of it?
