Andy Hutchinson

Hey everyone. This channel is dedicated to photography - specifically, but not limited to, landscape photography. I have a much busier channel dedicated to travel in south coast NSW which you can find here - kzread.info I wanted to keep the travel side and the hobby sides separate and so I have cleared out this much older channel and will be uploading here regularly over the coming months and years. Thank-you kindly for dropping by and for reading this far and I hope you enjoy the content I have created.

    AI keywords associated to an image are shown on the right side of the interface, but the menu for searching for images using an AI keyword is on the left side of the Manage Mode, under the Catalog > AI Keywords tabs, where one can click on any of the AI Keywords that ended being shown there. If I for example click on the word “horse”, only my photos where a horse appears are selected and shown (the key is maybe to search for just one AI Keyword at a time, because one photo would obviously have many AI Keywords assign to it dependent on how many relevant things and objects appear in it). AI Keywords works fine for me, and it allowed me to organize and catalog my photos adding keywords to lots of them at a time and/or to assign them to Categories, which I did (using as well the People Mode) for hundreds of photos in just one afternoon. I made some trials with the HDR process feature of SCDSee (just to see how did it work), and was not impressed with it nor with the results. The HDR function from Affinity Photo seems to work better (at least according to the trials I made). I also use Affinity Photo (I have been using Serif products since 2010 when their photo editing program was PhotoPlus on its x4 version) which I do like and will keep using of course, but I had it crash on me now and again, whilst ACDSee has not yet done so (but who knows if it might happen to me some day). I am also a fan of DxO PhotoLab. By the way, I've been watching some of your reviews and I liked them (thanks for them), they sound very fair, and you seem to be very knowledgeable about the subjects you address.

    I am sorry to say that DXO Nik will NOT honor 2 licenses I have to support their products or allow me to upgrade to NikC7! I have the receipts, I have the activation codes, I have past Tech Suppport reports using the same email address that I use now. They state "your email address is invalid" Not so! I sent them all the past emails! Yes NIK is a GREAT post processing software but I ca't tolerate unethical business practices!

    When I tested the app, considering it as a gift, end of 2023, it had not even the camera models of Iphone 12 (rls. in Nov 2020, or any newer phones) in it. It was not able to read HEIC files or DNG's processed with other fine software at all. Very very bad. NO BUY.

    The Halide team explained more about how P0 works over on r/ShotWithHalide. The P0 is only applied to the HEIC/JPEG image. As you explained, they found a pipeline to completely rid the photo of any computational input from the camera software, then add their very minimal tweaking. They have stated before they love grain in photos. It makes the photo feel more authentic. The RAW data image is still just a regular RAW DNG. P0 is NOT applied to it. If you purchased the latest Halide version and have access to Image Labs, you can take the RAW image and tweak the exposure with P0 applied to it. If you just edit the photo in any editing app that can edit RAW images, you are just using the plain RAW image. There isn’t any P0 applied to it.

    Andy, you are the first to review. Good work! I have a question and it seems to be a sticking issue out on the Reddit forums. Is the PZ image the DNG file or the .jpg after the +/- exposure adjustment? I am hearing that the .DNG file is simply a RAW file as if you would have captured the photo in RAW. I am reading that we do not get the Process Zero image in the RAW file. We would have to make an exposure adjustment +/- in Halide which saves a .jpg file that includes the Process Zero effect if you will. I am going to reach out directly to Halide. Will advise after I hear back.

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын

    All I can tell you is that I made no exposure adjustments to force a JPEG save. The RAW (DNG) is all that I used for this comparison and it is 12megapixels, as the developer said, because it's not using the quad bayer array to quadruple the pixel count up to 48megapixels.

    my bit issue with Photomator is that it does not do any lens correction, and since the Apple Raw engine does not support ANY newer Canon RF lenses, it is a bit problem. Photomator has been adding more raw formats beyond those supported by Apple, but nothing about lenses that Apple do not support and there are many. Modern lenses especially wide angle lenses required correction by design, and because of that Photomator is not a usable RAW editor canon. I contemplate addressing that by using DXO PR4 to pre-process the RAW and then edit in Photomator, at the cost of those large DNG files.

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын

    Yea, it's a work in progress that's for sure. Lightroom has a 20 year headstart and the Photomator devs are slowly iterating new features on a regular basis, so I reckon they'll get there at some point. :)

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын

    No definitely not. The big deal with this is that the Halide team found a way to skip the quad bayer array in the iPhone which is how you got those huge 48megapixel files as normal. The RAW files from this app are standard 12megapixels. Halide's always had the same RAW that you get with LR Mobile, Process Zero is different.

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын

    Nope. That's just RAW - Halide's had that for years too. With process zero it skips the quad bayer array on the iPhone sensor and all the upscaling and sharpening you get to shift to that 48megapixel size. You end up with a 12megapixel RAW instead that completely dodges the entire pre-processing pipeline. ProCamera doesn't do that, or LR Mobile or Moment.

    This "Process Zero" mode looks like the simple RAW (saving a DNG) of many other photo apps (I'm using ProCam at the moment)! Nothing special, just a DNG which can be developed with any decent RAW converter. I use it since … I don't know how long. The iPhone 4S was pre-DNG, the next one I bought could provide DNGs. The 4S had decent JPEGs (with minimal processing and rather natural looking results), but after that I was horrified by the JPEGs I got out of it (might've been the first SE). The DNGs give a much better idea of what the iPhone sensor is capable of (quite good resolution and dynamic range, and the new AI denoise of Adobe Camera Raw works wonders on these files). Not nearly on m43 levels, but still very useful. The current hi-res sensor in the latest iPhones I have no experience with.

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын

    No, it goes beyond that. It fully bypasses the quad bayer sensor responsible for the 48megapixel resolution on the main camera. This means images shot in this mode are only 12megapixels big.

    If I am not mistaken, the RAW file is simply a raw file. I think we need to use the +/- exposure adjustment for correction to get the benefit of PZ. Yes, Affinity Photo by itself is a mixed bag and can't compete with Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw (the raw editor behind them all, including Bridge and Lightroom). If you only need photo editing tools, the Adobe Photography Bundle is the best bang for the buck (and quite affordable, even though a subscription model). But this changes drastically when you need a vector graphics editor and a publishing tool alongside your photo editor - now the Affinity Suite can give you all you need (as long as your needs are not too specific, like sensibly working with spot colors). The concept of "personas" becomes much more "intuitive" then, because you get specialized vector and image tools to work on your files - which are always true "metafiles", where there's no technical difference between an Affinity Photo and Designer file! You can even open/edit them with the "other" app without problem - something AI and PS can't do, and ID is just a tool to bring it all together, while you have all the tools of all personas at your disposal in Affinity Publisher, and you can seamlessly switch back and forth through all apps and personas (well, to a certain degree). I have an inkling that this is due to the heritage of the Affinity Suite from some concepts born in the early to mid 90s. That said, the raw editing in Affinity Photo is truly abysmal, I would always use something else for this step! The photo editing itself does have some neat features Photoshop hasn't (like "Live Filters"), and some tools work even on par or better than in Photoshop (like the equivalent of the spot healing brush, which is called something else in AP ;-)). And then there are the iPad versions of the Affinity apps - way ahead (and with near feature parity to the desktop versions) compared to Adobe tools. Including using the exact same file formats on the iPad and not being forced to work with something like the "Creative" Cloud to get my work to and off the iPad.

  • @Andyhutchinson
    @Andyhutchinson4 күн бұрын

    Yep - I think the Affinity apps are great alternatives to InDesign and Illustrator, but Photo is not a viable alternative to Photoshop. :)

    @@Andyhutchinson It's about the whole package, not a single app, if one wants to appreciate the Affinity programs. As a professional who uses AI, PS and ID for many decades by now (ID since version 1.5), I have to say that all three Affinity apps are no "real" alternatives if 1:1 technical equivalency and feature parity is required. But if you are not fully entrenched in the "ways" of the respective programs (as I am, especially with AI, less so with PS and ID), all three Affinity apps *are* alternatives - not everyone needs the features the Adobe programs offer. I am able to adapt to the Affinity programs (and actually use them here and there), but I also find it often frustrating if things don't work "as usual". And the lack of technical features (or hidden problems with those features, like with spot colors and gradients) sometimes drives me crazy. I feel your pain! ;-)

    I have Affinity Photo, and I am used to it and find no problems for Editing Tiff or Jpg files with it. I don't like it as much for developing Raw files, for which I usually use DxO PhotoLab which I think is excellent for that task (and I am still using version 5). I have tried other programs (even the ones mentioned in the video as an alternative) but did not like them. But I did like, bought and use as well ACDSee Ultimate, which has an exceptional and very powerful image file management system, a very good Raw developer module (I think), and an image “Edit” module that includes layers, conventional as well as AI masking, portrait retouching, and all the rest of the (to be expected), filters and editing tools that most photo editing programs have. It can be said it lacks some of the more complex and sophisticated tools mentioned in the video for Affinity Photo, but has other nice tools that Affinity Photo hasn't, and I feel very comfortable working with it.

    20+ year graphic designer in digital and print, 30+ year digital artist: Affinity is great. Cancelled CC over a month ago and haven't missed it for a second. The only file that doesn't open in Affinity is an .indd but if you have a .pdf of that indd, it's fully editable in Affinity. There are a million things that work better and faster in Affinity than CC because it's not a 30 year old codebase. Don't need or want AI stuff. Super easy to switch, so many keyboard shortcuts are the same, workflow is really quick to get up to speed. Can't recommend it enough. And there's no need to go into how much better DaVinci is than Premiere, seems like everyone understands that now.
