I was in the corporate world for 30+ years, and have done a postmortem or 2. First, 👍👍for mentioning that you should look at what was done right, along with what's wrong. Next 👎👎waaay down for assigning blame. Never assign blame, just identify problems. Who cares who wrote a piece of unoptimized code, just fix it for next time. I've had a few supervisors who assigned blame. It never helped. All that happened was that people quit, and the moral of the one's that remained caused them to do even crappier work. Nothing good comes from assigning blame. Just fix the problems.
Thanks for the videos. There are tons of gamer related content / arcade / Switch and other consoles / game cafes / casino / DMM platform etc to cover in Japan where developers have a different audience or goal. Have fun!
You should try to translate into Thai. You don't need real data, but you also don't need real genre. It's just a matter of Thai people which seeking to gain some level of global stage recognitions. Maybe get in contact with local influencers to promote your games once you translated into Thai, the boost will be much greater percentage than many other languages you could translate into. Well I'm not gonna say it's better than Japanese, but who knows right? Recently even just a single game translated into Thai, it became phenomenal for the gaming circle. If you want to ride the train, just take some risks. Though all the Thai hardcore gamers can read English because of "gamer's brain" kind of thing, a lot of gamers cannot or can on lower levels. I think it's fair enough because Thai people generally born with 2 native languages and some people might have 3 or 4 native languages...some have 6 native languages to learn from. So English is at least the third language and Chinese is at equal ground but most people in my generation never learn Chinese.
So many great insights.
Really great video!
Some of these might be better represented on a scale of "effort vs impact" instead of a tier list. Like "difficulty" for example: low effort, medium-high impact. That can help small devs pick and choose what challenges to take on.
Shirt day!
I'm doing KZread exclusively for my game's devlog -- That being said, I'm not necessarily trying to market my game, I might even release it for free. So the point will be for the KZread channel. Making the game so I can build a KZread channel, but then doing a KZread channel to help me build my game. I'm going to be pretty open about the whole game, so spoilers, puzzle solutions, everything, because it's not so much about the game, even though it's all about the game, if that makes sense. I'm going to be making my channel for people that like to know how things are made, people that like behind the scenes footage, movie audio commentaries, that sort of viewer. My only issue is whether I should start it's own channel, or whether I should just use my existing. I got a hunch that I started getting less views on my old videos because of certain political views I held, and wasn't shy about voicing in other video comments. So we'll see
It is also not a good thing to write your name in red in Chinese culture, although red is a lucky colour in other contexts.
very useful!
These are really great! Thanks for making them.
Please, make the titles and thumbnails of your KZread videos better.
What would make them better?
Yea, it usually doesn't bother me but with these videos in Japan it would be nice to have something that stands out a bit more
@@zoey8821 These newer videos from Japan are completely different than the usual tierlist/tip content, yet you wouldn't be able to tell from the thumbnail alone. The blurry game backdrop is not relevant to the video's content. For this video, specifically, the thumbnail should have been a photo of the company's offices and of Anthony.
Every thumbnail is exactly the same @@zoey8821
at this point its a staple
Localization is good if the company doesn't change the wording to fit their narrative.
That hardly ever happens. And in the rare instances that it does, it gets called out and lambasted by the internet. It's a non-issue.
@@Cezkarma Hardly? Happens a lot for JP -> EN games.
@@rikku942 do you have any sources on thar? I'm curious.
@@tymondabrowski12 I'm not going to go get links for you, but you can do the research on the games once I mention them. I also should have said Eastern games instead of JP but Eiyuden Chronicles changed the vibe of a character completely with localization along with added words that never existed or wouldn't have translated to what they did in english. Steller Blade, they changed clothing because Sony localization made them. Dusk Diver had its box art changed to eliminate side boob. There are a few games that had underwear changed to shorts. I mean I can keep going about how things are changed by localization instead of keeping the game as they were intended from other countries. Heck I can move into anime as well but that's not video games. I can give more text change examples, but I think I typed long enough. Even if they are small changes at times, they really shouldn't be doing it because it's a slap in the face of the people that made the game, and it's pretty much the localizer saying "I can make the product better than you."
That's a really nice shirt sir.
Amazing content, i have began my youtube journey and i had to accept that its a long term game and the Chinese proverb you quoted at the beginning about planting the tree is why i started because i was interested years ago and i wish i would have started now but, now is the best time to do it. Thank you for the motivation i'm really grateful that i ran across your channel, keep up the great work your really inspiring us aspiring game developers with practical and real world advice.
What about ragdoll physics ? Or in-game level editor(To me it looks like it would be time consuming but be totally worth it in terms of attracting players)
This was fun to watch! Alexandra did an awesome job.
Just wanna point this out some actual non pity buy reviews out now for their game, its boring buggy and very badly designed, take everything he says with a huge grain of salt.
Brilliant video 😁 Thank you 👍
wow wow ...... did he just call us old ?
Ok boomer -M
Man intro to my small rpg game is on a train😭
Would gladly use UE5, but they have added all kinds shitty "inclusivity" mandatories. You can't use "whitelist" or "blacklist" in your code, Yes, in your code.
You guys should make a video talking about Easter eggs. I’m going to make an Easter egg dedicated to you guys in my game.
I really like the glasshouse approach you guys have to sharing your inisghts. Haven't seen a snake oil video from you guys yet. Really just keeping it straight, and tempering people's expectations when it comes to the realities of being a small startup.
Love the channel and thoughts. What I say here is meant to supplement, not argue. I think this is very much based on your art team's capabilities. I've dabbled in all these styles though not really for games. I used to be a 3D artist (VFX, commercial and film), but passionate hand-drawer and painter in my free time (though hardly a pro I've done some work for money, but it was usually for production previz and character design) and had the highest grade ever in my college for a hand-drawn cell piece (old school hand-drawn). When I started drawing (self-taught) I learned from the 'how to draw anime' books. So to me, Anime is easy, they have rules that make it easier to reproduce than something original or realistic - and it's more forgiving than trying to nail perfect realistic figures. 3D takes more time but the tradeoff is once a character is production-ready, animation is much easier and faster. Hand-drawn style animation, to do well, is possibly the hardest one here for me and, product-speaking, a shiney 3D object with passable animation will always look 'higher end' than a good piece of 2D animation. Sad but true (in my experience). Again though, it's personal. I dabble in game dev, and personally I think with my skillset 3D cell/toon is easiest as it requires less detail to be painted (i.e. more time in shading, less in UV and texturing) and a 3D rigged character opens up more possibilities for blending and dynamic animation. That said, I struggle to get exactly the look I want, but I'm still a noob with game dev and think it's down to that. haha - just thought to leave this here as an opinion from someone who's dabbled in a lot of these. I think basic 3D gives you a very high ROI for visual fidelity with minimal input, and cell-shading drastically reduces material and texture time if you have many assets that can share the same shaders (and toon outlines can be done with post-process shaders (at least in UE)). That said, to do anything well, requires significant time. This sht's hard yo. Power to all of us trying to make games. And thanks for all the videos, you always stimulate some thought.
Would you pay a small fee for a tool that automates the majority if not most of this process?
If you're considering turning this into a SaaS, I don't think it's a good business idea, since this is still a very manual thing. Platforms like Lurkit and Keymailer have "AI" content creator matching, but they are absolutely useless. I think this is something you need to do manually for the main part, as you are the only person who really understands your game and what kind of genre/creator fits it. -M
@@bitemegames I had a different approach in mind which still gives you all the control to search for creators that fit your game but speeding up the process and allowing to reach out to them in bulk. Ultimately, it would be nearly the some process as you described in the video, but much faster and convenient. Thanks for the feedback though! :)
Mines pretty narrative heavy. It's also got many many playable characters.
What is "Executive Pitch" ? xD
It's basically a 2-3 sentence pitch about what your game is about, similar to an elevator pitch. -M
Its funny to hear how many times you say hey! I clicked at this video and didn't really focus, my focus exactly started as soon as you said: I don't care so I had to think for a second about the title and what you said there hahahha
But hey, at least you haven't noticed how much I say like as well. Imagine how many of those hey's and like's I already remove during the editing process. -M
@@bitemegames Hey, I've noticed some as well 😂een mooie game release toegewenst!
niceee
Great video straight to the point
And you forgot two more things, talk to community ask for suggestions and send your games to youtubers to review it for you. Get the results even harsh critical comments and fix it. Dont be closed minded about things either.
I throw things into synonym for something about my game, and find interesting sounding ones. Fun story of why one of the names is not being chosen. I searched it on google, found only social media account that was what i searched. Well i clicked on it just to check if its some big account or if its something with 5 followers and that's all i was going to check. However on quick inspection [insert teddy going WHAT THE FUCK, There is so much porn]. Imminently that name had to be scrapped.
Yess...send key get honest review. however i'm actually honest. if it sucks i WILL say so <3
I'm planning to fund my game through dowry
"I wasn't aware that your game has to look good"... R'lly? dude do not get caught up with all those redditor who justify their game looking like trash by bringing stardew valley... The very first thing I started working on even before I had an idea of what the game will be was visual
What did 2D games did to you!!?? lol.. I still love them, and I think you're thinking in PC and console games, but on mobile it's very common to find 2D games and have a lot of marketability
Great video! Personally, my plan was to go the personal savings route, and I am a year and a half into it. However, in practice, I spent a lot more of my time working on mental health issues than working on my game. I also came to realize that I am held back more by the lack of financial security (for when I run out of funds) than I thought I would be. That being said, I don't regret making the decision. I'm going to have to pivot and try a different approach, but the time off was very valuable in rerouting my life and planning how I'll make the game dev dream real.
It is not because you worked at a studio that you will be killing it as an indie.... There is a reason most business even created by people with experience fail.... As a studio employee, you are given a task and you execute it without much thinking.... You won't be doing many different things... As an indie... You wear many hats and you have to be entrepreneur something an employee is miserable at... To be indie you have to be an entrepreneur bottom line. And about the layoff... This is why I say you have to be entrepreneur... You would have known the main reason of all those layoff... Companies were over hiring, cost to make a game skyrocketed despite making more sales than ever but if the cost is too high...
I highly suggest to not "just" look at sub numbers. There are some highly specialized channels out there, covering just very small niches. Even 1 or 2k subs can be "a lot" in that case.
If you find youtubers that match the target audience of your game, I think it is always worth reaching them, even if they have a very small audience. Having someone play your game and record both the game and their reaction is really such an useful feedback. It may not convert to a lot of wishlists, but you will see how people react to your game. With Twitch it is even better because you can also the reaction of the viewer live.
Yes, I kinda understand why my game wasn't chosen for roasting xD It wasn't appealing enough
Hi, I'm curious and looking for a logo/capsule artist. Could you share the one that did your great Banner ? thx
These guys are awesome. I love these videos!
Valuable information. Thank you!
Make more shorts, this was well done
Good video, with some good thoughts and insights there. Nice one! All the best for the future. :D
So TL;DR curate a email list of creators, good steam page, good press kit, get keys in hands of creators.
2:42 ASCENDING INFERNO SPOTTED!!!!!!!! WTF IS AN EASY GAME 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very insightful tips. I've already collected a small list of streamers and plan to add more when the demo build is ready. Wouldn't surprise me if I can find 200 of them. A streamer I talk to already has a 1 month waiting list. Probably safe to assume that could be normal for many more of them.
