    I suggest you stay in college for four years than go to graduate school just to make sure you have a degree on top on top of a degree just make sure they see that I wish I was in that position but than again you are probably out in the real way world because you are in college I hope you are so that way you can develop a sense of the real world and you don't have to listen to your parents well maybe not as much well what I ment was when you go to school in September

    Hi! I'm from Argentina. I'm studying Literature, I've no experience in edition but I would love to work editing books or in the industry itself. I was searching in the official page of Penguin Random House, and I noticed that they, sometimes, are looking for beginners. They ask u to send a "hoja de motivación". Would u give me some help bout this? ❤

    This was lovely! I think your video illustrates perfectly what humans can bring to art and poetry that AI can't. Your poems about what it means to be human and the experience of London buses feel grounded and real, like they are actual memories that you are sharing in your own unique way. I felt like the AI generated poems used some nice images but ultimately it felt flat, like it was all clichés I'd heard before. It's the equivalent of listening to "nature sounds" while you fall asleep. Also, I understand the feeling of starting a new job and not knowing where you're going next. I hope that you'll start to feel more confident soon and I'm always here if you need to chat. 💜

  • @poetpri

    Thank you so much! Honestly I don’t think it did - what helped me more was building up knowledge on my own. My MA gave me a little bit of foundational knowledge but nothing that I couldn’t find online or didn’t know already at that point because of my own research. Work experience > degrees is the way to go for publishing imo

Keep up the good work. Love from Cape Town 🇿🇦

    What do you think about people applying for internships in tge big 5 houses with no prior experience? Do big houses like penguin look for previous editorial experience or any kind of work experience in the role you want to intern for? Thanks 👍

  • @poetpri
    @poetpriАй бұрын

    I think your experience doesn’t necessarily always need to correlate exactly to the role you’re applying for like you don’t need to have direct publishing/editorial experience, but it’s more about having experience of those transferable skills which I mentioned in the video because most entry level publishing jobs will be admin based and will require those skills.

    Thank you so much for this video ❤ I’m currently contemplating what I want to do with my life and am looking back into going to school. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for books and always wanted to know what it’s like to work behind the scenes of publishing. It’s definitely something I’m interested in. As someone who has an A.S. in Photography I’m looking to obtaining a B.A. or M.A. Would you say most publishing jobs accept a Bachelor’s?

  • @poetpri

  • @poetpri
    @poetpriАй бұрын

    Woah well done for starting to think about your future so early on!! But honestly you might be tired of hearing this but you’ve got so much time you really don’t need to stress. I’d recommend when you’re at university, speak to your professors about potential career choices and explore your options because you might come out the other end of your degree with a new perspective or idea about what you want to do. I’d say for now if you do really want to work in publishing keep your eyes open for any work experience opportunities as they’re usually open to university students and try and network as much as possible when you’re at university - speak to people about how they got into the industry or what their day to day jobs look like to help give you a clearer picture, cos like I said you may end up changing your mind! Good luck with everything though and hope it all works out for you 🫶🏼💕

    Hey! I loved this video. Thank you for being so open and honest. I’m currently a mentor teacher looking to use my background to enter the publish world. I’ve held a previous publishing internship before but it never seemed like the right time to make the jump. I’m wondering how do you make yourself standout to even get to the interview point? I feel confident in my background to use my skills on the assistant level. However, I feel that I won’t make it far compared to individuals who have a publishing related degree. 😅 I would appreciate any advice you have! Thanks again for sharing 😊

  • @poetpri
    @poetpriАй бұрын

    Glad you enjoyed it 💕 Honestly the best way to make yourself ‘stand out’ is to just be confident in your abilities! With publishing it is definitely work experience > degrees in terms of what’s valued, people who have a publishing degree are not guaranteed to get a job. I did an MA and still had to do over 100 applications before I got my role! A lot of the times in publishing they just want someone who can get on with stuff independently and quickly, so the more you come across as someone reliable, friendly and who has tried their best to develop their knowledge of the publishing world (like by using publishing terminology in your interview or talking about the books you like from the publisher you’re applying for) then the more likely you’ll be to get a job! Hope this helps and good luck xx

    I’ve been reading for 4 years now - mix of open mics and commissioned sets/paid gigs - and I have literally NEVER been able to read without relying on my phone 😅 the minute I’m like ‘oh I know this bit, I can read it directly to the audience’ all words leave my brain and I trip SO much

  • @poetpri
    @poetpri9 ай бұрын

    AHHH dude I know that feeling so well!! I genuinely think it’s just a matter of practicing it over and over again until you know it as well as possible, or trying to build it up bit by bit. So maybe keep your phone in your back pocket and just try opening your set by reading one stanza without your phone, focusing on building upon just one poem that you can confidently perform. I also think establishing that relationship with the audience early on is such a great way to get rid of that tension and then even if you mess up a line when you’re not reading you can just be open and be like ‘oh lol my bad let me start that again’ or brush it off by making a joke. Finding ways to ease that pressure internally makes such a huge difference I’ve found!!

    @@mimijones6842 always happy to help! 🥰 and yesss for sure. Hey! This is the first video of yours I’ve seen, and it’s so helpful! Also your voice is very soothing by the way, really helped with info-absorption 😂. I truly needed this video! I graduated from my BA in classics and archaeology last year, and after some experience in that industry and working multiple part time jobs I’ve decided on a career switcheroo and pursue publishing! Obviously I have no experience whatsoever with any kind of english related degree lol so I’m a bit overwhelmed - very much in the same stage of life you mentioned about living at home and constantly getting rejected! I applied for two entry level jobs at penguin just in case and got rejected in the first round, and I feel that’s definitely to do with my lack of experience. I’d love to pursue an MA in publishing to kind of get me up to speed with the industry, as it’s something I’ve been considering since embarking on my undergrad (typical lol). This video is so helpful for tips, and I’d love to know what kind of degree you did for undergrad or if anyone you knew at Penguin did a complete 360 career change to end up there. Will ofc be reaching out wherever I can and gaining experience where I can, and fingers crossed I can get into this publishing course and kickstart this chapter of my career! Will be watching more of your content for sure :) Much love 🩷

    Heya! Firstly, thank you so much for watching and thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. I did do a literature degree for my BA and then a Publishing & Creative Writing MA but I really don’t think you need an MA to help you understand the industry. Generally what’s valued more is experience and even though I did an MA, it didn’t really help me get my job. What did was my experience of office-style jobs and own research into the industry and attending events! Basically if you have experience with the same transferable skills you see in the job descriptions you’re looking for, that’s more important to focus on! If you’re interested and you think you’ll find it helpful I’ve also just uploaded a full day in my life where I talk a bit more about my job and the kind of tasks I do, as well as how I manage my time here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJWataquc6--gso.htmlsi=-G0ldOjv41a7CYB7
