Hi there! I'm Priyanka, or PM on stage and in writing. I'm a spoken word poet, writer, bookish content creator, and poetpri is where I chat about all those things. I'm also currently working at Penguin Random House UK, so poetpri is my side hustle. Outside of what I do, I'm basically a big nerd - I obsess way too much over anime, TV, book and video-game characters, all while chugging a gallon of green tea (the best tea) at the same time. I'm based in London and am always down for a chat about writing, or poetry!
You can find my contact details below, or find out more about what I do here: poetpri.com/po...

I’ve been reading for 4 years now - mix of open mics and commissioned sets/paid gigs - and I have literally NEVER been able to read without relying on my phone 😅 the minute I’m like ‘oh I know this bit, I can read it directly to the audience’ all words leave my brain and I trip SO much

AHHH dude I know that feeling so well!! I genuinely think it’s just a matter of practicing it over and over again until you know it as well as possible, or trying to build it up bit by bit. So maybe keep your phone in your back pocket and just try opening your set by reading one stanza without your phone, focusing on building upon just one poem that you can confidently perform. I also think establishing that relationship with the audience early on is such a great way to get rid of that tension and then even if you mess up a line when you’re not reading you can just be open and be like ‘oh lol my bad let me start that again’ or brush it off by making a joke. Finding ways to ease that pressure internally makes such a huge difference I’ve found!!

@@poetpri such a useful tip, thank you!! Typically write quite long pieces but I’ve got a few shorter ones I could definitely try this with!!

@@mimijones6842 always happy to help! 🥰 and yesss for sure. Even with longer poems I’d highly recommend maybe even just taking pauses between lines or stanzas so you’re not just rattling it all off your phone in one go and that way it also helps to break it down a bit more and let the words sink in :)
