Hello Terry. I have a few questions for you. I play bass in church and have been using the B6 along with a Dunlop X mini as a passive volume pedal. I also have a MXR Studio Compressor (same as the Bass Compressor I am told). My questions are- how do you have the compressor going into the unit? My volume pedal has an internal switch and can be set to be a passive volume pedal or as an effects pedal. Would it make more sense to plug the bass into the compressor, then into the input of the unit, and use the volume pedal as an effect (change the switch)? And where in the B6 signal chain should the volume effect pedal be placed (optimal)? I don't dislike the B6 compressors- I just wanted to free up processor space (and I like how the MXR handles the signal from my passive bass). I don't use any IR or cabinet sims (just amp sims or preamp sims). The last thing I use is the ZNR (I think it works great). I run XLR out to FOH. I am just trying for basic meat and potatoes sounds that have variable flavors (and occasionally use an octave effect). I wasn't sure if you used the compressor in the effect loop or direct in. Lastly, I have a SansAmp DI pedal that I want to use as a preamp. Could that be routed into the effects loop (it's kind of hissy if plug out of it into the B6). I appreciate any insights you could share. Thanks! - Rick
@terrymcgaha35602 ай бұрын
I run my compressor right from the bass, then into the B6. Personally I would run the volume pedal in the loop, after any effects so if I were to turn the pedal down, it would not effect the signal I have going to the effect, only controlling volume after any effects. Example, I want to come down but still hear the full effect of my chorus. If you always use the sans amp di, I would put it before the B6 input and then use the znr first. But if you prefer using effects before the preamp, you could go bass>compressor>b6>effects send>loop to preamp>volume pedal>effects return, putting the loop last in your chain or second to last in front of any delay or reverb. The preamp in front of the b6 is probably a bit hot for the b6 input as to why you are getting a hiss. Possibly try turning your b6 input signal down to alleviate it. Thanks for watching and the questions. Sorry I took a few days to respond.

Sorry for the late reply!!! I myself would always utilize the global eq unless it drastically changes the tone of your other patches. IR’s, I don’t use much only because I haven’t found one that I couldn’t do with the onboard preamps or amps. And as far as the choice between those, amps and preamps hold the same roll as each other. It’s really a matter of preference and I use them both depending on the tone I am looking for.

A couple questions. If at times I'm not using an amp do I need to turn off the send in that patch or I shouldn't have to change anything and everything will just go to front of house like normal? Does the send effect take up much processing percentage? I have built some patches I like but I don't think I can add anything else unless I delete an effect. To be clear the send effect needs to be after all the effects you want to send to the amp but in front of the pre amp/ cab that you do not want to send to the front of house correct? I've been running out of the headphone out to the effects return and running the amp flat but that still receives the amp/cab effect as well. This would solve that issue. Lastly, I would have to add a send effect to every patch I use if I am going to use or potentially use an amp on stage. Sorry for so many questions but this potentially can solve many issues for me.
@terrymcgaha35603 ай бұрын
No, you shouldn’t have to turn the send off. I believe the send takes 3% but does occupy the space of an effect. Yes, the send needs to be before the built in preamp or IR. Yes, you would have to add a send to every patch but depending on how many patches you use, you could keep what you have, copy it to another patch, then add the send. Also, if effect space is an issue, you could always make your patches “smaller”.. for instance, if you never run a fuzz with a chorus, copy the patch, delete the chorus from the patch, then do the same for another, but deleting the fuzz instead. Most of the time if you really think of what you use you can cover all of your tones.

Thanks! - Rick
@@terrymcgaha3560 thanks so much! I am trying to wrap my head around this stuff and your videos were straightforward enough for me to understand. Never thought about using the volume pedal in the loop. Looking forward to future videos.
Thank you again
you can do this on the mx5 fx loop block bro,..after putting up the fx loop block in the chain (usually i put it before the IRs that is last in my chain), go out to the send for the direct sound. just turn the “mix” parameter to zero “0” the “direct sound volume” would now be the “send” parameter. hope this helps, let me know if it works for you.
Awesome. I figured somehow there had to be a way to do it. Thanks for sharing the info.
Does someone know if Headrush will continue to support the MX5? Seems they haven't delivered a firmware update in more than a year and there's rumor on the forums it'll be discontinued soon
Without knowing anything official, my guess is that there will be one more firmware update before it is discontinued. If it is currently on the chopping block. That’s how a few items Ive owned have played out at leased.
@@terrymcgaha3560 Thanks Terry. I´m evaluating getting the MX5 or either a NUX 30 or Valeton GP 200, as they're in the similar feature range, and seems the NUX also have great sounds.
Hey Terry. I have the DP-24. What are you running into track 31/32 to play tunes to learn? Id like to do that into my 23/24 track. Thanks for any tips!!
I run the 1/8” output of an iMac into a DI, then into the tascam.
I finally pulled the trigger on one of these today, and your videos helped. Thanks!
I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do!!!
Terry, you don't need a DI box with the mx5. the outputs are TRS. I use a TRS to XLR and set to line.
My apologies, I should have been more specific. At the venue I was at, the only available inputs were xlr, which I only had 1/4” cables. Which required me to use a DI to get there. In my home setup, I do use the trs to xlr cables. Thanks for pointing that out.
how much did it cost all together?? i want to do this SO BAD!!!! the tone is INCREDIBLE !!!!!
Other than the cost of the guitar, the parts were probably around $300. The blocking and brass nut I did myself, along with all the labor, etc.
can you make me a brass nut??? I’ll pay ofc
Thank you! For the last little bit of the video. That answers my question of. Could the Zoom B6 be used basically as an effect board.
I’m glad the info was helpful. Thanks for watching and ask if you ever have questions.
I really like how straightforward and useful your videos are. I don’t have this product but it was nice to learn about it from a bass perspective.
Thank you very much
Awesome setup man
Well……I upgraded….substantially. That video will probably come in the next couple weeks. But thank you very much. I have been happy with that setup for some time. It just works great for my situation.
Thanks for the video. Good info to know. I have the BT adapter and will check it out. On another note, I was wondering if you recommend the MXR bass compressor pedal to go with the B6. I have used that pedal in church on their in-house board and it seems nice. I want to free up a slot on the B6 and and was considering going from my bass into the compressor then into my Dunlop volume pedal and then into the B6 (I would set and leave the compressor settings). I have also been investigating the Cali Compact Bass and the UA 1176. Thanks.
I highly recommend the MXR pedal. I always run compression right out of the bass, so firstly, because the MXR sounds better than any in the B6, and also why take up processing power or a pedal slot when I always run it anyway.
YES Terry! I was going to suggest exactly what you said about using the BTA-1 and your phone app. Great content, thanks!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words.
I wanted to buy this thing, but i was considering about the dram. Because I wanted to add a new "Wave dram file format" and play a bass line with in it in a gig at the same time.
If you can figure it out. Please let us all know. I’m curious.
your video inspired a feature request, i'd suggest making one for yourself on the headrush forums as well.
Soon my friend, soon. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.
Low dsp is the biggest drawback to this unit. Stupid to need to buy a Bluetooth adapter to use the drums for practice without having to bend down. Other than that this thing smokes the helix for bass tones, not much else.
Yes, the rhythm deal is not ideal for those who want quick access to it. I don’t use it so it has never been an issue for me personally. As a whole though, I feel the B6 is one of the better processors on the market. They each have their own pros and cons.
Great videos. They’ve helped me get up to speed quickly. Used the B6 live in church this morning for the first time with the XLR. Impressive! Learned a bit from watching these videos. Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching. I’ll always answer questions if you have them.
@@terrymcgaha3560Thanks. I am trying to get an idea of how best to use the IRs, meaning do I use an amp or just a preamp? I am also considering purchasing an MXR Bass compressor so I can free up an effect slot. I am also trying to figure out how to volume balance patches and decide if it is better to store individual EQ (or filter) settings on each patch or leave them flat and use the global EQ.
@@thefool2007have you decided on the external MXR pedal? I’m considering adding external compression just to free up B6 space, just can’t decide if it’s worth it.
@@DrewLaughlinTheFirstHi Drew. Still investigating compressor pedals. I like the idea of having a separate compressor for consistency (as the first part of the signal chain before the passive volume pedal) and to free up a slot (processing space) on the B6. I am looking at the MXR compressor and the UA 1176 pedal (which is a digital copy of a rack compressor). I really like the Cali76 but it is more than I want to spend (although it could be the best compressor pedal). -Rick
I’ve been using this effects processor for the last year and a half or so and it’s great I can pretty much get whatever sound I’m looking for and your 100% right the headphones don’t sound like it will with an amp or whatever your using. Keep the videos coming brother your doing an amazing job thanks man!
Thank you so much for watching. And especially thank you for the kind words.
Very helpful! Made perfect sense- thanks.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sharing this with us Terry. Best wishes 😎😎🎶🎶🎶🎶
Thank you!!!
What headphone unit do you have? I'm in need of a good cheap one. Lol
It’s a Rolls 4 channel. It’s got 20 years on it and still works good.
Thanks for the questions. I’m always glad to answer if I can, or at leased point you to where the answer might be found.
You are correct! Cables matter!! Time matters!!!
I’d spend 20 minutes hooking stuff up and forget what I had in my head years ago.
Thanks for sharing! Going to check this out.
Thank you!!!
Very helpful thank you.

Just bought this unit a few days ago. These videos help. Thanks for explaining the DI differences. For the money, this unit is in a class of its own. I replaced a B3 that I had mixed feelings about. B6 is pretty amazing.
I’ve had many units through the years and when it comes to strictly bass, the B6 is superior to others. I wonder what the next unit will have in store for us.
Can you get dialed in using a bass amp, but then just using the B6 at the gig ampless?
You can, but you might want to be prepared for a little fine tuning during your soundcheck. A bass amp will color your sound a bit different than a PA system.
I have no issue with the fretboard on the new ones at least they came out with some colors that were desirable. The first Santa colors wasn’t horrible. They were just boring. The nylon teal, summit purple and the Overland gray are gorgeous.
The colors are much better. I would like to get one of those in evergreen though. That color just pops to me.
Terry, Thanks for the B6 videos on the FB group, they are very informative. In this video there are two signals going to the amp, one quarter jack and the other is effects send. Did I get this right?
One is a 1/4” effects send that goes to the amp. The other is the xlr out that goes to the mixer.
how did you put the string tree on??
I put masking tape on the spot, measured, marked the hole location, pilot drilled the holes, then screwed it down.
link for the brass nut???? @@terrymcgaha3560
