I've been meaning to rescape my 6 gallon that houses a tangerine koi male who is very fancy and adding more plants for density. I really want to add shrimp but I'm a bit nervous because the rest of my tanks also house females or males. I have a rasbora 10 gallon but my bio-load for that tank is probably at most risk for being toxic although I test frequently and preform maintenance for water quality.

If you want little/no water changes, y'all need to look up Father Fish on KZread. I've been running his method for 6 years now and it's legit. Low algae, great plant growth, and better fish health than any of the other methods by FAR. I run a 6 inch sand bed with lots of plants and Malaysian trumpet snails(MTS). MTS are the best invert for your tanks, let me sell them to you real quick. These guys explode in population like any other snail, but, here's the kicker, they bury themselves in the sand during the day. I only ever see less than 10 during the day but at night I go in with a flashlight and there's at least a hundred of the little doods in there. When they bury themselves in the sand, they take a good amount of detritus with them and the top layers of sand are aerobic in which the bacteria concerts the detritus and ammonia into nitrite and nitrate. The plants use the nitrite and then the lower inches of soil are anaerobic and convert all the remaining nitrate into nitrogen gas that seeps its way back up through the soil and then bubbles up to the surface. It's a complete nitrogen cycle that allows for a more complete ecosystem with microfauna like worms thriving in the soil. Search Father Fish on KZread. He's the wise old wizard of the hobby. Fishtory! is doing this very well too, often in collaboration with Father Fish

I have had successful tanks where water changes became rare once established and planted tanks that after a year and a half I didn't need to change the water. That said the most healthy tanks I've had either plants and animals I always see better results after I do a water change and the fish are usually more active and color up. I wanted to be one of those people who can say they don't do water changes but now it's such a quick way to keep a stable tank without having to add unnecessary additives and using a small pump and hose and Rubbermaid bucket with wheels it's not the hassle I once made out of it

I don't believe this! I bought a fully submerged purple waffle today at Petbarn, Australia. She said, the plant needs a high tank, because it needs to be fully submerged in water. She said, if the leaves stick out, they will die. And you are telling me, it's the other way round? Oh God. Should I take it back and complain?

And I love spoiling my fish through good food, so I may need to order some of his! Speaking of food, does anyone here think it's worth it to freeze foods to make it last longer? I'm planning to replace dry foods every 6 months or so because I know it can go stale and lose nutrients, but if I can make it last longer I'd like to.
