Hi Christian Great video Rick Springfield was a pop idol for his role as Doctor on daytime soap opera and had to fight against that to be taken seriously as a musician Jesses girl obviously has a special place in my heart as i ended up marrying her ! Where can you find a girl like that ? You can’t she is One in 7 Billion Musically Working Class Dog is power pop as good as Cheap Tricks or Cars , Rick is heavily featured in documentary about Sound City the studio where it was recorded as was Rumors and Nevermind ; apparently a great room for drums. TMBG Love them , my favorite track is Ana Ng off Lincoln which was on jukebox of my local and constantly played A bigger connection to LTBG is their kids songs which my kids loved ( check out Mesopotamia and “ streaming “ or track sharing with Dial-a-Song, they were in vanguard of bands entering digital world Psychedelic Furs / JAMC Have my ticket ; Oct 9th I am huge JAMC fan and looking fwd to hearing new and old tracks and maybe a greatest hits Furs show Comsat Angels Fantastic album , hugely influential and i know Interpol were huge fans . i don’t have this one only their 2nd on CD Physical Graffiti , this is fun one for me but no need to talk about the music These buildings are on 8st ( St Marks ) between 1st Ave and Ave A ; I walked by it last week and always get a kick just looking at it It is just a few doors down from where Sin E cafe was and where Jeff Buckley performed . Jeff was singing LZ as he swan out into to night to never return Im sure he must have walked by these buildings and had a small grin on his face and humming LZ on his walks to Sin E Its also the Stoop that Jagger is sitting on in the video for Waiting for a Friend Todd R video would be great So I can gush about the album Easter

@@jessem470 Hi Jesse! 👋 Thanks so much for your very kind comment as regards my video - and may I compliment you on this post 👏 I loved it from beginning to end 😊👍🏻 Your comment about ‘Jessie’s Girl’ really made me smile and I’m delighted you found a woman like that to marry a build a life with, when she’s one in seven billion ♥️ I also loved the background info on the fight Springfield had to be taken seriously, and his appearance in the Sound City documentary. I have to say though that I now have extremely high hopes for ‘Working Class Dog’, as you have said its power pop on the level of The Cars and Cheap Trick 👌 Sounds like I’ve bagged myself a bargain! Cheers also for your thoughts on TMBG 🙏 I do know ‘Ana Ng’, which is a great song, and I was aware of them writing children’s songs but I’ve never listened to any of them. I also think the ‘Dial a Song’ service was genius - so ahead of its time! ☎️👂🎶⏰ Brilliant news you have your ticket for the Furs and JAMC! What a gig that promises to be! Hi Chris, Thanks for fulfilling my request in reviewing one of my suggestions. I very much enjoyed hearing what you’ve reckoned to the album. I’ve loved the album’s Spanish dancer front cover too! I once bought a print of it on Earlestown’s flea market. It was on my bedroom wall for several years! You’re right it’s been a popular painting. It was once on a wall during an episode of Only Fools and Horses! 😂 This album has been my second fave album of the 1990s. Here’s my top ten: Matthew Sweet - Altered Beast Tindersticks - 1st Album The Posies - Frosting on the Beater Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister Prefab Sprout - Jordan the Comeback The Divine Comedy - Promenade Saint Etienne - So Tough Aimee Mann - I'm With Stupid Michael Penn - Free For All Jeff Buckley - Grace I’ve told you I’ve loved the Matthew Sweet album. His big fans have tended to prefer it to the more well-known Girlfriend. I’ve thought the greatness of the Tindersticks album owes a lot to the expanded line up the band had at that time with guest members. I’ve felt Dickon Hinchliffe was a key member and I’ve loved Terry Edwards’ contributions to “The Not Knowing”. I’m not so sure about some of the influences you mention. I’ve thought the band had a lot of originality for one thing. You mention Nick Cave, but not The Triffids. I know Stuart Staples has cited David McComb as an influence. He performed songs by The Triffids at a McComb tribute concert around 15 years ago. I haven’t thought Morphine an obvious influence. Cure for Pain for me best typifies that band’s sound. It came out the same year as the Tindersticks album, but later. I did see Morphine live on the Cure for Pain tour. I agree you can get an awful lot out of the Tindersticks album. In that sense, it is indeed like a book/film. You did a good job at trying to analyse the album. A lot of its appeal to me is its sense of mystery though which you did touch on as well. I’ve also very much loved its vibrancy and eclecticism. Thanks so much for sharing what you’ve reckoned! Phil p.s. Tindersticks are still a great band for me, even though they’re quite different these days with the line up having changed. I’m looking forward to their next album due out in September.

@@philo9027 Hi Phil 😊👋 Always a pleasure to hear from you, my friend. You’re more than welcome as regards fulfilling your review request. I was more than happy to do it and had a great time revisiting an old favourite once again. I am very pleased indeed to hear you very much enjoyed hearing what I had to say about ‘TINDERSTICKS’ - and I’m delighted you’re a fan of ‘The Red Dress’ too 😊 Earlestown Flea Market is the best in the land, as far as I’m concerned, so it’s only fitting you found a print there of such a fabulous painting 🎨 I’ll have to keep a lookout for it too the next time I’m binge-watching ‘Only Fools’! 😆 I love your list of fave ‘90s albums and I’m pleased to be a) familiar with all of them and b) to have a few of them in my vinyl collection. I know your love for Matthew Sweet runs deep, and he really is one of the artists I should have mentioned at the start of the vid, when I rhymed off a number of bands/artists I have you to thank for getting me into 🙏 I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts on ‘TINDERSTICKS’ - both in relation as to what I had to say and what you have brought to the discussion. I agree with you about the greatness of the music being down to the expanded lineup, although I stand by the influences I cited in the video. Their sound has originality - primarily through Stuart Staples’ utterly unique voice - but I can trace a lot of the musicality to various sources (namely the ones I mentioned). They mine their sources tremendously, but the roots and influences are very much there, although I admire their ability to shapeshift sonically (a point I revisit on more than occasion). I do concede though that not mentioning The Triffids as regards their sound (I only mentioned them in reference to you getting me into them, so they kind of were referenced 😉) was an oversight. Now you mention it, The Triffids thing is rather obvious - especially on a track such as ‘Jism’. I am pleased to learn that Staples has cited McComb as an influence and I would love to hear him singing during the tribute concert! With Morphine, it’s more a mood they conjure with their music that puts me in the same headspace as when I’m listening to Tindersticks. I feel there’s parallels between the two bands as regards what they’re striving for, and what their baselines are. There’s some musical similarity for me too, but it’s just a bit more subtle than some of the other names in the discussion. Lovely to learn you have seen Morphine live too! To conclude my response, I was so happy to read in your concluding thoughts to me that I touched upon some areas you agreed with - especially as regards where the album’s appeal lies (mystery, for example). I am really looking forward to September too, when the next album is due! Thanks again for your time and support, Phil. Best wishes, Chris

I couldn’t agree more that it’s a masterpiece - an album I know I will continue to come back to through the years I have to come, just as I have come back to it over the years since it’s been in my life. It’s a staggering achievement, truly. I’m ALWAYS happy to discuss Crispin Glover, so let’s do this! 😆 He’s tied in my all-time top five fave actors, which also includes Spader, Oldman, Dourif, Rourke and Penn. Crispin is a true genius, a real one-off, and ‘River’s Edge’ boasts one of my all-time fave performances of his as the unforgettable (and yes, fascinating) Layne. It’s a wonderful film that I’m always quick to recommend to those not familiar with it, so I’m delighted to be in the company of someone who knows the film and is a fan of it too 😊 I would love for Lynch and Glover to team up again, as they did so wonderfully in ‘Wild at Heart’ ♥️ I actually wrote a song about Crispin’s character in ‘Wild at Heart’, Cousin Dell, many many moons ago before the hair went grey and a bit of weight was piled on, but hey I’ve just renewed my gym membership so that’s a work in progress again - at least it will be next month, when I’m eligible to start back! 😆 As for the grey hair, I embraced that long ago and have no issue with it at all. Anyhow, all that aside, hopefully this link will work and you can listen to a much younger me playing ‘Cousin Dell’: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fpNtysV9dL2tj7Q.htmlfeature=shared As for Tindersticks providing the soundtrack to a David Lynch film, that would be all kinds of glorious! Now, regarding Caleb Landry Jones… He is a very interesting and talented actor from what I know of him, but I feel he has some way to go before he can be considered as weird as Crispin. He has the potential to share Crispin’s podium, given the chosen career path, but I’m not sure he’s there just yet. For me, Crispin is my undisputed ‘Wizard of Odd’ 🧙 I admire Caleb’s eccentricities, but would currently bracket his ‘weirdness levels’ alongside the likes of Brad Dourif (a phenomenal actor) and Jeremy Davies (Crispin-esque in the affected mannerisms etc.). I haven’t heard any of Caleb’s music, but you already have me wondering if it’s as weird as Crispin’s! Thank you as always for your time and support, Christian

I was in Edinburgh from Tuesday, 9 July to Thursday, 11 July and did all my digging on Wednesday the 10th, prior to the gig at the castle. Yes, you’re spot on that The National were playing at the castle on the evening I returned home, so it sounds like our digging was a day apart. Suede were magnificent. I’ve watched both bands live many times - and the Manics are all my all-time-faves - but Brett and the gang were on fire and blew the Manics off the stage. Suede were on first and the Manics just couldn’t match their energy. They were having some real sound issues too, which didn’t help, but they soldiered on and did the best they could. Thank you for your kind words as regards the records I showed in this vid 🙏 I’m very excited to give my Monks album a spin and I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on my Felt vid. I used to live off-of Leith Walk, for a few years from around 1992 to 1996. I bought so many records from Vinyl Villains, it is hard to conjour-up stand-out finds, although I most probably bought Josef K 'The Only Fun In Town' there, in its original pressing and things like Eton Crop and Big Flame singles...and that said, I now recall I definately bought The Ex 'Spanish Revolution' on Ron Johnson Records, which comes in double-single book format, from there, which at the time had become rather hard to find and is still a bit of a purchase. By the way, that's the same bag design they had when I first visited in 1988, which I'm sure must've predated that visit by a few years. On that occasion - that first meeting well-met - with Vinyl Villians, I was in Edinburgh for a Poll Tax demo. I had almost completely run out of money, such was the era, such has it always been with me. I remember there was a Rote Kapelle record I found therein, on that primary encounter, wandering in to Vinyl Villains almost lost, after the march, with nought but clothing I stood up in, my hair in a blunt quiff, my cardigan baggy with a hole in the elbow, in a city I had never visited before or even thought of, the castle looming, landscape looming, but I was a quid-fifty short and, not yet knowing Irn-Bru bottles may be used as currency at a push, left defeated. The record was titled "It Moves But Does it Swing?" and it was their Peel Session extended play, I think six tracks. I found it elsewhere, probably in Glasgow, a year or so later...and you might like it Christian, raw lowfi post-punk moving into to shambling twee-indie-pop, kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWuhmrKeh7espKQ.html I might add, dispite all those tears-before-bedtime and desiring and searching I don't own that Rote Kapelle vinyl anymore. And have no idea when it left my chaotic orbit. Bravo, at getting 'Forever Breathes The Lonely Word' in the wild. I also have the repress, as it wasn't one of the Felt albums I purchased back the in the day. Although I have a few archeological Felt gramophone recordings on Creation and Cherry Red, dating from the time I was young and dumb in my dottage I am no completist in such matters, the eccentric personal rules I work under for buying ancient recordings are involved, hard to explain, and aren't always purist. Query Christian: did you not go to Avalanche Records? S.

@@Layla-kd4ui Hello, Sean 👋 I do hope all is well with you and you’re having a good start to the week. That’s really cool to learn you once lived off Leith Walk - and really, really cool that you’re very familiar with Vinyl Villains 😎 That Josef K album is so good, and I’m delighted to say I have an original pressing of it in my own collection. I am so happy the bag design has remained the same all these years. It’s a brilliant-looking design and an homage to the owner’s appreciation of The Cramps, which I totally respected as it became an instant talking point. I appreciate your post taking me to what it was like for you in 1988, with the Poll Tax demo, but felt defeated for you too when you described how that Rote Kapelle EP couldn’t be acquired during that visit. At least you got it eventually, though 👍🏻👍🏻 I really appreciate the Rote Kapelle recommendation too, but felt defeated again when you said you no longer own it on vinyl. I wonder where it went? 🤔 I will have to give it a listen, as it sounds very much up my street. Thank you for the very kind words as my acquiring ‘Forever Breathes’ 🙏 My Cheshire Cat expression said it all, eh? It sounds like you may have some of the other Felt albums - all originals, as you would have seen in my ranking vid - as those in my collection, but I aim to get ‘Me and a Monkey’ next. You may have ‘The Strange Idols Pattern’ though, which I don’t. I also respect all eccentric personal rules too, when it comes to buying ancient records ✊ I only saw Avalanche Records, which I believe was in the Mall, as I was heading back to the train station. It looked busy from the outside and had lots of band T-shirts but I didn’t manage to get in and have a mooch. I’ll have to give it a try the next time I’m up in Edinburgh - although I’ll certainly return to Vinyl Villains. Best wishes, Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary I haven't been to Edinburgh for about twenty years now...although somebody we only vaguely know has very very kindly offered us a week free in the empty townhouse they have in Edinburgh before it goes on the market, so likely that's a clincher. Layla's father is also Glaswegain and there's family around Edinburgh. Regarding Avallanche, you probably know it is owned by Andy, formerly singer of Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes, and also Rote Kappelle. Back in the day the original Avallanche shop was near in South Clark Street, near the Meadows if that means anything at all to you. Regarding lost and absent records, well, when I moved back down and went to art school ulitimately in Brighton I left a lot of records with my ex girlfriend Anna, I had a peripatetic life then and so did she, and I didn't quite manage to retrieve them what with one thing and another. They slipped and mingled with her own vinyl collect, then vinyl of her subsequent boyfriends, then, finally, they got mixed with her lovely husband Owen's record collection (he was the drummer with a pop combo that I, to this day, have never heard named Thee Stereo MC or something like that). I saw the records, or at least some of them, in their Brixton flat about a year back, many bought originally from Vinyl Villains and Avallanche, like old almost forgotten friends from childhood, half remembered whistfully...but it seemed too late to reunite with that viny, although Anna offered them back, as long as she could retained the Two Tone. But they seemed too at home, and Anna has had them for almost thirty-years now, which might be considered a lifetime by some. S.

Owen If had passed a few months before, it still isn't that long ago. It was an oddly joyous funeral dispite the tremedous and untimely loss...Layla and I got a life from the remaining band members. Owen was one of the nicest most down to earth people I have ever known, seriously...it only seems like the other day that it was their long in coming wedding in Brixton, our daughter was their youngest bridesmaid. Thank you Christian, The Killing Joke was probably the first album I got that wasn't Meat Loaf or AC/DC I asked my now passed Aunt Lin to buy it for me for my one of my something-teenth birthdays, and she asked "Is it music, or singing or both. What kind of record is it Sean?" and I had no idea how to answer. My Aunt Lin didn't even have a record player. The House Of Love, was probably at the decline of my interest in Creation Records, but I still viste that album. At the time I can't recall them being very popular apart from in the NME, certainly not amongst my friendship circle at the time, only one mate, Duncan had the album. Led Zepp, I grew up with, although I don't know how I feel about that album or them now. The Lee and Nancy album, reminds me so much that first year in Glasgow, everyone had that album, which I had previously never heard of, it was played at each and every Glasgow School of Art disco, that and Love. It was all lank hair and paisley à la Bobby Glllespie at the spent dogend of the decade. Teenage Fanclub about the emerge as temporary heroes from the remnants of the Boy Hairdressers, Belle and Sabastian not quite a twinkle in the eye of that Glasgow scene. The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground...listening to forever, for every wet weekend afternoon since 1982. The Only Ones, reminds me of my younger classmate Polly, at Brighton Uni, who when she first heard it, playing in a cafe, mistook it for a Violent Femmes ablum she hadn't heard, and I think I joked "and this what I have to put up with!" The Smiths debut, what can I say, I played it back to back throughout the summer of 1984, waiting to leave home, waiting to make an escape. It was an escape. I guess I have or have had more than half of those albums...The Specials...everything is an association with an association, "all our lives are but a story" Jerry Dammers was the DJ at my ex girlfriends wedding a decade ago in Brixton. Jerry and her elderly, gentle, Italian father had got on really well. Her father had been an Italian fascist officer during WWII, a captain at the age of fourteen, something he regretted, and had been awarded the Iron Cross by Hermann Goering, another thing that was a difficult memory. It was all a bit "Captain Corelli's Mandolin"...his own father was a high ranking founding Italian fascist, who ultimately opposed alliance with Hitler. It made my head spin somewhat, somebody who had met Goering, having a laugh with somebody who had met Nelson Mandela. Our lives are all webs of connection, our records collections doubly-so. Britpop, or the bands framed as "Britpop", passed by...and I wasn't interested, I was possibly too old (or it felt or all sounded like a pastiche of early Creation stuff, Primal Scream, Sea Urchins, and The Jam and Kinks all dished-up as cold seconds...everything all at once)...Layla, my partner, followed the Stone Roses on tour and hung out with them a lot of times (ditto, Oasis, she was present at the football match between Oasis and Nigel Kennedy, there are photos somewhere) but so far, after fifteen years, has been unable to convert me. Our mate once posted on a parenting forum "at what age is it okay to play your kids the Violent Femmes?" I'll shut up now...I have an early meeting anyway....'this is the end my Northern friend, the end...' for now. S.

That’s fair enough as regards ‘Silver Sun’, ‘The Only Ones’ and ‘BRMC’. You may feel that three from the 30 that didn’t make my Final Cut would be more worthy of inclusion, and I would totally respect that, but my choices came down to the finest of margins. All I can say is that I love all the albums in this top 30 that, in all honesty, often goes beyond a question of musical quality and more into a sense of feeling and personal connection. Yes, you mentioned the Martin Rev show on a previous vid and I’m over the moon you got to experience that! It must be an incredible memory for you already. I’m pleased we agree on ‘Violent Femmes’, which was my number four. That’s a fair shout on ‘David Bowie’, but it wouldn’t have made my final 30 if I owned it. That’s an excellent call on ‘Tracy Chapman’ 👏 I had it on vinyl and sold it a while back when I needed some money. I regret the sale, as it’s a very fine album. I’ll aim to get it back in the collection someday. You can cheat away, Jesse and get ZZ Top in there if it makes you smile. Thanks Christian. Back when Chloe (remember her? ) and I first moved to Glasgow, in 1989 we purchased the Ultra Vivid Scene album with Irn-Bru bottles. In those days you got a 10p return on a bottle...so negotiated with the record store guy on the doorstep, wearing him down with our logic and stupidity...that Irn-Bru bottles were infact technically as good as money. Eventially he gave in, accepted the unorthodox but very Scottish currency being offered "Okay, go on then" the deal was shaken on. The album wasn't my choice, I had let Chloe have her want, as the whole Irn-Bru bottles as currency escapade was her idea in the first instance. I remember that the record store guy went in and got the record for us as we waited, still awkwardly outside by the door (possibly because the purchase was only a notch above shop lifting) with three carrier bags of bottles each. A few years later Chloe moved down to London along with the Ultra Vivid Scene album, having natural custody. So, I guess technically I never really owned it, not in the strictest sense. Then about ten years back she sold it, along with a third of her extensive record collection, mostly US indie (Shimmy Disc, K Records) but also Sarah Records releases and suchlike, having outgrown them, like the clothing of childhood. Although I only heard this after the fact, when Chloe mumbled something about the vinyl culling having funded six months in Japan. The thing was, not only had she entirly forgotten the circumstance of the Ultra Vivid Scene purchase, but had reimagined and presented an alternate history inwhich the whole Irn-Bru bottles incident was cast as a heroic failure, in her version the record store guy had just laughed us away, our silly English tails between our legs. Whilst it is argueable whether or not I ever owned the Ultra Vivid Scene album, for a fact, I never owned any of the other records mentioned by you today, much to my shame and embrassment. However, I did see 14 Iced Bears play live...probably, maybe, almost certainly in 1986 prehaps, definately...or alternatively 1988, where no Irn-Bru was involved, in a cramped and seedy London venue the name and location of which are both lost to the passing of the years. I do recall they were supporting The Pastels, as I shared a sentence with a youthful Stephen Pastel at the bar. The rest of the evenning and possible line up is obscured by the soupy fog of time and the vagueries of memory, but you know what they say "if you remember the 1980s...you've got too much time on your hands..." @@TheVinylSanctuary Thank ye Christian...Chloe can be interesting, she went back to Japan for another year after that, and infact has stayed in East Asian for most of the last decade, living now in Thailand. Parted from her vinyl, which is still in London. Her lack of memory about records and events is quite shocking set against her three undergraduate degrees in three different subjects, her MA from the RCA, and her PhD in history. Although there are mitigating circumstances as to why the Scottish years are a bit blurry. In those days, in that time in Scotland, in Glasgow first then Edinburgh, I saw a band almost every week...but Chloe saw somebody play probably twice a week. I saw every band from the Batchelor Pad to Fugazi, from The Young Gods to Half Japanese, Melody Dog, My Bloody Valentine , Thee Headcoats, everything inbetween. There are more gigs I have forgotten than I remember...then there are the gigs I missed, regardless of having tickets, for whatever reason, The Fall in 1986 when the car broke down on the way, Jesus and Mary Chain supporting Primal Scream supporting in 1985 for the sake of the cost of a train ticket and £1.50 entry...the list is painfull. I believe there is a film of The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans, Dawson, and Badgewearer from around 1991, Glasgow (a gig where the bouncers on the door were truely awful and the bands appologised to the audience) part of the film, I understand was used for MTV or something, where Chloe and I are seen dancing at the front...but I have never seen it myself. Okay Christian…I have a thought experiment kind of challenge for you if you’re up for it. My friend Chloe and I being both history and music nerds sometimes challenge one another with convoluted ‘what ifs’…for instance one such early ‘what if’ was: imagine Elvis Presley was the twin who died, was stillborn, and it is Jesse Garon Presley, the darker skinned twin, who shows more Cherokee heritage, who lives to record, what is categorised as a ‘Race Record’ at Sun Studios…(a) what are the consequences for music? (b) what are the consequences for US society in the years to come? Another such question was: to save the world you have to travel back in time and completely erase from music history one of three musicians, either (1) Lou Reed, (2) Johnny Thunders, or (3) Neil Young. So (a) who do you choose to erase (you don’t have to kill them just make sure they never join a band)? (b) what are the future musical consequences of your choice? For instance if you erase Johnny Thunders does a young Stephen Morrissey still have ambitions as a song writer or does he stick to books and journalism? Maybe The Smiths still form with Morrissey as songwriter and singer but they are lyrically significantly different without the New York Dolls influence. So…thinking of your format Christian here’s a challenge for you for some future date: choose three albums from your music collection by three different musicians or bands where the second two albums arguably wouldn’t exist without the first. Best, Sean.

  • @TheVinylSanctuary
    @TheVinylSanctuaryАй бұрын

I do enjoy a challenge and I have to say that these conversations with your friend Chloe sound very interesting and rather intense in the best way possible. It may be down to the time I am replying to you at, but can you give me an example of what you mean by the challenge you have set me, just so I am understanding clearly what it is I need to be bearing in mind to rise to this challenge as best I can? It’s the ‘where the second two albums arguably wouldn’t exist without the first’ bit I’m slightly unsure about 🤔 An example may help; then I can think about choosing three bands/artists based upon the example you provide. I apologise if this request makes me sound a bit daft or vague, but check I must. Best wishes, Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary Thank you Christian. Okay, it is really just about making a chain of connection, overt of covert...for example, I could argue that Primal Scream's 'Sonic Flower Groove' wouldn't exist without "Fovever Changes' by Love. I could also argue that without Love, and Primal Scream, The Stone Roses debut wouldn't exist. It is very subjective of course. Somebody else could alternatively argue that the Byrds were the most important influence on early onset Primal Scream, that there's no direct connection between Love and The Stone Roses, that the Sea Urchins' single "Please Rain Fall' might be a more appropiate third record to have in the trio. It isn't about being right but about having a convincing theory and narrative. I hope that makes the challenge make more sense. I argued a theory with Chloe once that hippy died and punk was born at the 'Kent State Massacre' in May 1970 (as in Neil Young's 'Ohio')...present when Ohio National Guardsmen openned fire on Kent State University students protesting the exculation of the Vietnam War were future members of the band Devo as well as Chrissie Hynde, all close friends of those killed and wounded. By the way Chloe's answer to the Jesse Garon living and Elvis never being born was something like: a version of Elvis who is considered "colored" within the culture of that time making 'Race Records' which are massively popular with black and young white audiences alike across the US (and soon the world) would maybe: kickstart an independant and autonomous non-white mainstream music industry in the US, creating ecconomic growth for non-white communities, indepenndance and political power within non-white comminuties and progress the civil rights movement over a decade earlier than happened in our timeline. The first black and female US president is elected in 1980 easily defeating Ronald Reagan and her progressive reforms of the ecconomic and political system spread throughout the world. Obvious really. Best, S.

I wrote a whole mini essay about vinyl conspiracy theories, long haired music, and the Wedding Present cover of of Gang of Four's "I Found That Essence Rare'...and then it disapear into the digital aethers before I could post. So Christian, in brief...to just answer your actual query, and to add to the maticulous study...after an initial scouring of my long playing records: "Foxheads" the seventh track from the overlooked Close Lobsters album Foxheads Stalk This Land, "Another Day" the seventh track from the This Mortal Coil album It'll End In Tears, "Villiers Terrace" the seventh track from the Echo & the Bunnymen debut Crocodiles convincingly prove the point. I tried the theory out on the Durutti Column albums LC and Return Of...needless to say it ceases to hold water, which might be blamed upon the eccentric caprices of Vini Reilly giving us the best first, but I accept the overarching cosmic truth of it where I find it, and I will continue the rigid study. I love ‘Foxheads Stalk this Land’ and you may be pleased to know it’s in my own vinyl collection. A great album - ‘Pop like that!’ I also own vinyl copies of ‘It’ll End in Tears’ and ‘Crocodiles’; however, as brilliant as your track seven picks are from these three albums, only ‘Villiers Terrace’ was in contention out of them, for me personally. ‘Villiers’ got round down to my last 50, so an excellent show, but didn’t make it to the final 30. It’s all very fine margins, and it’s a terrific song. I have ‘The Return Of’ on vinyl too but not ‘LC’, and I do agree the theory loses some weight there. @@TheVinylSanctuary " I’m so sorry the original mini essay was lost" it was just the universe telling me I wasn't saying anything interesting. I just listed some ablums where I felt the sixth track was argueably the strongest...and why I considered 'The Boy with the Thorn In His Side" the weakest Smiths single. One time I saw the Close Lobesters, in Bedford, there were only half a dozen other people in the audience and all of them had only turned up to see the support band Mega City Four. I was on nodding terms with the singer Andy Burnett a year of so later when I moved to Glasgow as he worked in the healthfood store near our first tennement flat, he told me that that Bedford gig was their worst gig ever...but how could it not be...I was half the audience. I also knew the printmaker in passing, who did the cover art screenprint for "Foxheads Stalk This Land"...she and I both used the Glasgow Print Studios, although me in a more cackhanded manner. At the time everyone seemed secretly to be somebody else...I remember the receptionist there, at Glasgow Print Studion, Louise was leaving to move to London, and I asked her what her plan was and she said she was going to sing fulltime...it was 1990 and she was Louise Rutkowski and she and sister were in the process of recording as a members of late onset This Mortal Coil. I had had no idea. The album they're on is Blood. The rule of seven doesn't work here either. I don't listen often but I have a terrible nostalgia for This Mortal Coil. I very much associate "Song to the Siren" with leaving home for the first time and living in crappy bedsits with fiddled gas meters and having nothing but records and old overcoats which once belonged to dead men. The premium cover 'Felicity' was of course for Peely...and for the sake of completion let us not forget the Wedding Present's Girls At Our Best cover, which I wasn't so fussed about. The Wedding Present...funny...I thought they were rubbish with a rubbish name whence I first heard them, then by the third play I loved them to bits, very much around the lyrics, the guitars were incidental. It’s my fave from ‘Suede’ too and my third fave Suede song overall. When I was a teenager, my bedroom was a loft with no door - meaning my music and guitar playing could be heard throughout the house when I wasn’t being polite enough to wear my headphones. Because I played ‘Suede’ a lot, my mum became a huge fan of the album and ‘Sleeping Pills’ became her fave song from it! She would hum it and sing it quite often. When I asked her why she loved it so much, she said the lyrics were funny. She loved the line in particular - as did I - ‘There’s sweet FA to do today’. @@michelewiese48 Hiya, Michele 😊 I hope you had a lovely weekend. YT is playing up again over on AISB. I posted my Boy Harsher review for you yesterday afternoon, only to realise this morning it didn’t upload. I have tried a few times this morning re-uploading the review over on AISB, both with my other profile and this one, so I’ll keep everything crossed it works here on this channel. I just didn’t want you thinking I had flunked my assignment, as I need that extra credit! 😆 Thank goodness I had a draft of my assignment in my ‘Notes’ app, so I didn’t lose what I wanted to say 😰 ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ by Boy Harsher… ‘Intro’ - Slighty ambient, spacey and just a wee bit spooky. I like the ‘buzz’ sound on it… it was oddly soothing. ‘A Realness’ - Now we’re cooking! It would appear I’m picking ‘80s synthpop/new wave/post-punk revival stuff almost exclusively from your weekly lists, Michele. It’s only fair to state that I was aware of Boy Harsher’s sound to a slight degree, due to your inclusion of the excellent ‘Pain’ on the Midnight Moonlight playlist, but this could have been an altogether different-sounding band, as I believe this is their debut? It could have been a folk/funk mashup! I’m very pleased it’s sounding as it is, because this is what I’m totally vibing with in general, in this moment in time, when I’m choosing to listen to music for pleasure. That abrasive ending was inspired and I loved the cool, detached vocals. ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ - The vocals in this track are more androgynous and European-sounding. The simple but effective synth backing reminds me of DAF. This isn’t Sunday afternoon music with a flag-cracking sun to accompany me, but I’ll absorb it on this my first listen; gather my thoughts for you; then make plans to listen again when nighttime descends. I feel that would be the optimal time to experience this album, but I’m very much enjoying it so far. ‘Last Days’ - This song sounds cinematic to me. Throughout its runtime, with eyes closed, the opening scenes of ‘Lost Highway’ flitted across my brain before making way for Ryan Gosling’s Driver beating a hasty retreat; then Ryan O’Neal’s Driver appeared - uttering the words ‘Go Home’ just as the song ended. ‘Suitor’ - Eyes wide open now following ‘Last Days’, I hear the rumblings of a soundtrack to a horror film. ‘It’s a tricky situation, it suits you’… the vocal delivery sounds slightly sensual, alluring but simultaneously red alert-level dangerous. Just before the three-minute mark, when the song stops ever so fleetingly, then kicks back in with another DAF-like riff, the song is an absolute delight. The voice loses control, with its intense cry of ‘Don’t turn your back on me’. My fave track so far. ‘Morphine’ - I can’t see this word now and not think of one of your fave bands, Michele 😊 I’m happy the whispered vocal style has returned, as it sounds so soothing on the ear. A little bit of a New Order tinge to this one, and the line: ‘She’s like morphine on my mind’ definitely made an impression with its impassioned yet understated delivery. A very ‘cool’ song, with its icy core thawing ever so slightly upon the song’s climax. ‘Save Me’ - The most ‘commercial’-sounding song so far, perhaps? Has single potential, so I’m wondering if it was indeed released as such. I found this one really catchy and slightly lighter and brighter than the songs which have come before it. The vibe is still dark overall, but ‘Save Me’ injected just the smallest dose of dappled moonlight across the album. ‘Deep Well’ - I love the music, in particular, on this track. The synth programming is superb and I love the repetition of the central riff…. Positively hypnotic and very enjoyable. ‘Big Bad John’ - Wow, that intro! This sounds like it’ll be a synth epic before it even gets started; then I hear this sneery laugh and the voice makes its entrance. I’m intrigued who this John person is, and that ‘no one’s afraid now’. Again, this song could easily be on the soundtrack to a film (most likely a psychological thriller) chronicling the life and times of this titular character. ‘With the switch of a blade’ was delivered with such hissing menace. A very powerful song. ‘CryFest’ - The eyes are closed again now, as the sun shines so brightly. This is a rather creepy song on what has been an unsettling, atmospheric album. It’s strange that amongst its cinematic qualities, a song such as ‘CryFest’ has ambient notes to it too, which are actually quite beautiful. I find some of the whirring, jarring, grating, mechanical scrapes that pop up in this album quite comforting, but the overall mood and feel is hugely effective. I found this to be an incredibly intriguing listen. There was immediacy to it, but I’m going to spend more time with it. The album appeared to come and go rather quickly, as I found myself engrossed in its sounds and textures. Once again I’m delighted with my choice for this assignment, and I hope my initial thoughts on ‘Yr Body is Nothing’ paves the way for us to discuss it in more detail. I hope you’re having a lovely Sunday and managing in the heat. Looking forward to hearing from you in due course 👋

@@TheVinylSanctuary Good afternoon, Christian! I have to laugh a little because you and I experienced the same frustration yesterday. I tried posting my Tindersticks review thrice on AISB! 😬 Thank you for persevering because I was delighted to receive your message this morning. You do have a knack for choosing nighttime albums from my lists. It sounds like Boy Harsher got under your skin and I couldn’t be happier. They released 2 albums in 2019 and a soundtrack in 2022 I may love even more than this debut. “Pain” was my introduction to Jae & Gus and it was quite the revelation for me. ‘Yr Body Is Nothing’ is filled with a seedy & dangerous unease and I enjoyed reading your review. My fave tracks are “Suitor”, the title track, “A Realness”, “Morphine”, and “Big Bad John” “Suitor” brings to mind Yello’s “Oh Yeah” I think that’s part of the reason why I love it so much. Jae’s voice entranced me from the start. I hope you hear the connection/similarity in tone to the Saada Bonaire album. I’m wishing you a magical Monday. Part 1 of 2.

Oh Man You’re going to put us to work on this one ! So my real comment will follow but 2 things straight off the bat. First I was listening to Martin Stephenson & the Daintees today And how happy was I to see track 7 Wholly Humble Heart ( so theory seems to hold up ) Second Patti ; possibly the greatest living artist next to Dylan , anytime you want to do video on her Im there !

Hi Jesse! Always great go hear from you and many thanks indeed for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏 Yes, there may well be some work for you to put into this, to see if Brett Anderson’s claim is true - should you choose to - but I have to say I enjoyed myself a great deal and I find the theory to be rather fascinating. I will check out the Martin Stephenson track you have mentioned, as I’m not familiar with it. I do have ‘Boat to Bolivia’ on vinyl, which I enjoy a lot, but haven’t played it in a long time. That’s excellent news you’re a Patti fan, as she’s an all-time-fave of mine. I’ve watched her just the once live, but she was phenomenal - utterly captivating. It’s great to learn we have Patti’s music in common, Jesse 😊👍🏻 Best wishes, Christian

NOTE TO VIEWERS When discussing ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome’, I incorrectly (and rather frustratingly!) state that it’s Boris Yeltsin being parodied in the promo vid for ‘Two Tribes’ alongside Ronald Reagan, when I should have said Konstantin Chernenko. I hang my head in shame, and can only hope I remain a member of my pub quiz team 😉🤞🏻 Also, in relation to ‘Two Tribes’, some people may regard the song as being track 5, rather than track 7. I consulted Discogs for clarification and it is listed as track 7 on the original vinyl listing, so it made it into my final 30. Best wishes, Christian

Mine would be: Songs of the Free by Gang of Four, Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello, Special Beat Service by The Beat, UB44 by UB40, The Gift by The Jam, English Settlement by XTC, the Fun Boy Three debut album, Tin Drum by Japan, Songs To Remember by Scritti Politti, Too-Rye-Aye by Dexys Midnight Runners, and Sulk by The Associates. I’m about to see if your list includes any of these.

I saw him play in 1984...either before or after Ian Dury, I was never really a fan - never fan of that era of British 'New Wave' although I realise, for many at the time, that was a concert to die for. I do however like "Everyday I Write the Book' I can't knock the lyrical content. S.

@@TheVinylSanctuary and equally I hope this finds you well and dandy. I was just wondering Christian, do you have that Robert Wyatt & Ben Watt record 'Summer Into Winter'? Bafflingly it passed me by at the time (but then it wasn't an album and so much of what you did or didn't hear was based on word of mouth and tiny reviews in the NME) and I have only recently, in the last year, got it on vinyl. @@Layla-kd4ui All good here thanks, Sean 👍🏻 Keeping busy with one thing or another, but doing ok. I have not heard that Wyatt and Watt album, but it does sound very interesting. I totally see your point as to why, back in those days, it was quite easy for certain records to be overlooked. Relying on word of mouth and the musings of music journalists - as well as the patronage of people such as John Peel - was so essential in the discovery of new, exciting sounds. I am so pleased to hear you now have this album on vinyl and, no doubt, you are enjoying it. Best wishes, Christian

@@TheVinylSanctuary it isn't an album...just an EP, sadly I feel, which is why I missed it for so many years...a minor release on Cherry Red in 1982 when I was still wearing black and mainly listerning to Bauhaus and Joy Division. And of course, Cherry Red was an oft maligned record label. John Peel too had his dislikes as I'm sure you're aware, being into Lawrence. I saw John Peel live once, in that I attended one of his roadshows circa 1991 in Glasgow...I went up requested the A Witness song 'I Love You Mr Disposable Razors' from Mr Peel and danced around like a fool whilst Stephen Pastel and Aggi moped in the corner. It was best to request I song you knew he'd be keen to play. Anyway, I have taken you off the Elvis topic somewhat. Appologies. S.

@@Layla-kd4ui Ah, an EP… thank you for clarifying. Still, it’s great you have it now and can enjoy it whenever you wish to give it a spin. I have never understood why Cherry Red was maligned so much. I have enjoyed so many bands/artists who have graced their label over the years. Yes, I’m aware Peel didn’t like Felt because he intensely disliked the album title ‘Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty’. Lawrence wrote him a letter about it and I believe he asked for some tapes back. Lawrence has been on record a few times stating that Peel’s disregard of Felt damaged their impact a fair bit. I know Peel rated ‘Primitive Painters’ but that was probably more down to the presence of his beloved Cocteau Twins… Thank you again for sharing another of your stories - always enjoyable to read - and no apology necessary. I enjoy conversations that go off on tangents and cover subjects I find to be interesting. I will check that song out by A Witness later this evening, when work is done and dusted for the day. Best wishes, Christian

This was a really insightful look at an Elvis album i have always really liked The venom in his voice while he sings Pills and Soap The sheer heartbreak and despair of Shipbuilding And the fun and optimism of Everyday I write the book I think there were 3 Elvis album between this and get happy that really i didn’t care for this brought me back. Elvis mY hVe felt it himself and brought in Langer and Winstanley to get him where he needed to be. Some look at this and criticize it as w marketing and EC as at this “ Punching the clock “ and not making art . I am torn about that but L&W did great work here . A few comment ago i called Shipbuilding a cover by Robert Wyatt It is Roberts song for the moment he recorded it Elvis make a valiant attempt at it and inclusion os Chet Baker is very special Anyway i know mare now than at start so well done , thoroughly enjoyed it Another artist who recorded hos own songs after being made famous by others would be Dylan Example : Mighty Quinn Dylan sent a bunch of demos out in late 60s like Wheel on Fire to artist but his versions came out years later Thanks for another great video Jesse

Hi Jesse! Great to hear from you and I do hope all is well. I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed my video and found the commentary to be insightful 👍🏻 You make some very good points in your post - particularly the difference in tone between ‘Pills and Soap’, ‘Shipbuilding’ and ‘Everyday [sic] I Write the Book’; the decision to bring in Langer and Winstanley to get him where he needed to be; and Dylan recording his own songs after being made famous by others. I really enjoyed reading what you had to say, so thank you for taking the time to share 🙏 Best wishes, Christian
