The Goal of the channel is to help the newcomer to Ham Radio find answers, see different techniques, and consider viewpoints that can lead to their own method of enjoying the hobby. I share my journey so other amateur operators can teach me while I might provide an opportunity to help others learn as well. It is all much fun, camaraderie, and community.

Have you been able to connect to the Bluetooth?
Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it! As far as Bluetooth, I never gave it a try. Once I got it running as a gateway and connected to either my phone or cell hotspot via wifi I stopped tinkering. Have you tried contacting the software developer on github?? Let me know? See you out there. 73 de Bill
So it doesn’t like iPhone Bluetooth I was able to get it to connect to my kindle fire but no luck with aprs droid. I have not reached out to the developer.
@GunsandRadios something else just came across my mind. I know I still have the firmware available at the time of the video because it works for me. I know at least one newer firmware exists. Look into that.
@@Bill-HRT what firmware are you using? Thank you for your response
I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one after playing with Meshtastic and then using APRS. It looks like a poor man’s PicoAPRS.
Thanks for stopping by. There is definitely a lot of tinkering that can be done with this device. It’s a bit beyond my scope, but if it’s in you there’s uses to be discovered. I believe I got mine directly from Lilygo. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice setup. I like the little keyer paddles. 73 from N5KU
Thanks! I see stuff on the web and try to find out about it on youTube. If I think it'll fit, I give it a try. If it does not, I can it, return it, and give something else a try. So far this kit does the trick. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Just new to HAM CW is so Alien to me. Thanks for uploading this.
Cameron! Thanks for joining in. Don’t let cw intimidate you. Give it a try with the Long Island CW Club. It’s more than just a place to learn; it’s a welcoming club. I don’t consider myself good at cw, just confident and happy to keep trying. I know at least ten people that started learning it after me, and they are definitely better at it. That should be encouragement enough for you to give it a try. Hope to copy your call sign one day. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Love the TX-500 and thanks for the video. We need to see more of you.
Rick! I appreciate the kind words! Thank you for stopping by, watching and joining in the conversation. That radio is one of my favorites for sure. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I’ve not seen that key before, which one is it?
Thanks for stopping by. That paddle is the CW-500 by Lab599. It’s made especially for the TX-500. There are two versions. I like it. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Cool solution to the TX heat on the amp.
Thanks for joining the conversation. I took that idea for the fans from a TX-500 and amplifier I saw on the internet. It uses the pwm function of the processor to control the fans. See you out there. 73 de Bill
This video is great! It's the first video I've seen of the attachable Lab599 paddle in-use. How do you like it?
Thanks for stopping by, watching, and joining the conversation. I like that paddle. First of all it is always with that particular radio because it doesn’t fit anything else. It’s solidly connected. It is however a potential point of failure if the radio is dropped, leaned on or otherwise mishandled, but I’m willing to take the risk for the convenience factor. It’s well-built and works well so far. It’s not a Begali, but it’s excellent in the field. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice outing. Great park. Used to row there on the Davidson College crew. GL on the kilo! 73
Thanks for stopping by! I’m lucky that that park is so close and it’s nice! I bet being out on the water there is nice. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I'm interested, but there is no link, no availablity to reserve.
Hi! Thanks for watching. I appreciate it. As I mentioned in the video, the antenna is temporarily unavailable. Supply chain shortages still slow some things down. Keep checking the site, and email the site owner to find out about availability. See you out there. 73 de Bill
That's sweet, nice This is some stuff I'd do in a hotel on vacation lol
Exactly! I bring more stuff in the bag to fiddle with than clothes, lol. Thanks for stopping by! See you out there. 73 de Bill
It’s great how small and easy that packs up
Thanks for stopping by! I’m looking forward to this antenna. I’m not using it mobile in a traditional way, but the size is very good for carrying. See you out there. 73 de Bill
great video Bill. Looking forward to Huntsville
Steve! Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate you taking time out to watch and join in. I’m looking forward to Huntsville! See you there! 73 de Bill
Nice demonstration! I ordered a mini drone so I don’t have to throw anything - operations on both shoulders.
Hi! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and jumping into the conversation. I appreciate it. The last line I put up for my loop was done with a drone and an inexpensive, Amazon remote drop rig. Drones work! See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice video Bill. Thanks for the info.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and jumping into the conversation. I am sure I will like this antenna. I have not had the chance to test it, but I trust Kevin, K7SW. I’ll let everyone know how I fare. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Excellent video Bill, glad the antenna is working for you.
Kevin! Much and many thanks, Sensei. I haven’t had the chance to try it out; I’m sure I will have good results. I’ll let you know. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Show off! (I'm not just jealous 😀)
.45! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking time to comment. I appreciate it! I'm not showing off, lol. This is all copied from people way more ingenious than me, lol. Of course, I'm a big QRP-Labs fan. I'm also a big fan of Adam, K6ARK; it's his board that I'm using inside the QMX. As far as the addition to the QMX, I closely followed N6MTB's application of Adam's board to the QMX. This video shows his finished product; kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKGhtbWlj6fOZLg.htmlsi=X5rMKF-Uhsjh2WMM I'm just having fun. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice. I've never had much luck with capacitive touch keying. It's too susceptible to stray RF.
I appreciate you stopping by, watching, and taking time to join in. Thanks! Well, this is my first attempt at touch keying. I'll find out what the ups and downs are. I appreciate the head up, though. I'm not really sure this is capacitive . . . I heard Adam, K6ARK make mention, but I didn't listen well enough, I guess; it's his board and design. I think I will ask him again. At any rate, thanks for joining in. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I touched base with Adam; this board is capacitive touch keying. It's the kh-1 touch keying that is not capacitive.
Thanks. I have my frn now and just got my gmrs application in today and take my technician amateur test in a few weeks. Great video.
You are welcome, of course! I appreciate you taking time to leave a comment. You are on the way now, and I wish you much success. Glad the video helped. Stop back in, and let us know how things go. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Last night on 40m I heard someone say he uses bow and arrow. EFHW is a nice configuration. I have one. It runs along the top of a wooden fence and then rises to a 16 foot tall inverted V. I reached someone in Hawaii last night from San Francisco.
Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking time to join in the conversation. Yup, people use many techniques to get that antenna up there. I've never used the bow and arrow yet. The slingshot is another popular methods, and so is the spud gun. I have, however, used a drone with a drop mechanism, and that works well, too. Sounds like yours is making the trip pretty well. Good job. See you out there. 73 de Bill
That's a great setup! Thanks for sharing it! 73!
I'm glad to share what little I know and anything I find out from other helpful hams. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Thanks for the tip on throwing the bag. Can’t wait to try it out.
Thanks for stopping by! I want to share any tip I have found useful. I appreciate you taking time to jump in the conversation. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Hello how are you
I am well. How about you? What's new?
Amen. Most of the time, the fuss about spectral purity is just fuss. FCC approved? Good enough for me.
Thanks, Rogue! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking the time to join in the conversation. You are right! 'nuf said! See you out there. 73 de Bill
Good work, Bill.
Jason! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and joining the conversation. I appreciate the support. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I’d hate to try and get a weight over a tree limb at a picnic spot with people watching after the first failed attempt.
Thanks for jumping in the comments and joining the conversation! It is much appreciated. Yeah, a couple times I felt the embarrassment, but my drive to get the radio on the air soon overcame that. I don't even notice now. Same thing with CW. My goal is to get er' done, and what people I know or don't know think about it rarely gives me pause when my throws look awful or my cw isn't close to perfect, lol. Keep tossing! They ain't paying attention anyway. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Very cool flexible panel setup.
Dennis! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and jumping into the conversation. I appreciate it. I'm happy so far. I've been fretting over how to get this done, and when it all came together in my muddled mind, I was content. It fits what I want. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Love that panel
Kyle! Thanks for being here and joining the conversation. Man, you don't know how close I was to pulling the trigger on that molded panel at Moore Expo. I had ciphered a way in my head to make it work; it was better than one with an aluminum framework. If I had been in my own vehicle I probably would have bought that one. I'm glad I didn't. It was about (3)x the price, and not exactly what I wanted. This panel works for me pretty much as I had it worked out in my head. Until I saw Jason KM4ACK's video, I was going to find or design a small, low-profile rack for the top of the pickup. This worked out great. Thanks for stopping by. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Nice install! 99% of people will never notice! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
Patrick! Thanks for getting in there with a comment! Much appreciated! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and the support. You're right. 99% won't care or wanna know how it was done. The other 1% are busy pecking on their keyboards on some forum, lol At any rate, it's pulling anywhere from 200wh to 280wh on a good day and 80wh to 100wh other times the sun is hidden. For me, it's a good panel. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Very informative! Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for the good words! It means a lot. I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. I'll do my best to keep them coming. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I am putting two renogy panels on my shack/shed. I'm a little nervous about being up that high. I don't get up on roofs that much.
Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking time to share a comment. If you are not comfortable, do not push yourself. Maybe find someone you can direct and trust, or find someone who has done it before and will do it for you. I was watching a video by the HOA Ham, and he suggest possibly getting a contractor who will follow instructions to get it done right. Maybe you can make yourself comfortable by familiarizing yourself with safety equipment and the process??? Take your time. Do what is good for you. Feel free to jump in the comments and share your results. See you out there. Good luck. 73 de Bill
Thanks for the shout out!!
Jason! Got to give credit where credit is due! You put a lot of good content out there for us, and I appreciate your efforts. Thank you. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Well done, sir!!
Thank you kindly! I appreciate you getting into the conversation with kind words. Thanks for stopping by and watching. It's been on my mind for a bit, and those two videos brought it together for me! Thanks to those guys. See you out there. 73 de Bill
24 Wheelers representing!!! I did like that bullet point mounting solution that I saw at the Expo.
Kyle! Dude, thanks for stopping by, watching, and getting in here to represent! I appreciate the support. I sat on my hands and tolerated a CD player mount for almost a year before I saw this one and pulled the trigger. Glad I waited. I’ll bet they’ve got Tacoma mounts!?!?!? See you out there. 73 de Bill
👍🏼 Great job. Looks Ike another #HamSexy installation!
Thanks you so much! I appreciate the compliment. Thanks for stopping by, watching, and jumping into the comments. Took me a while to decide, but when I saw it I knew this was the one. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Good job! I just got one of those for my truck, hadn't got it installed yet. Got all your instruments and com panel right where they need to be. IFR certified!
Jeem! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking time out to get in the comments! Your support is much appreciated. I started this install last year at Huntsville. The best dash mount I could find while everyone was packing up the show then was a CD mount, and that radio head has been bobbing on that since then, lol. Couldn’t pull the trigger on anything until I saw this. I can definitely keep up my instrument scan now, lol. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Again, fantastic video. Simple. Straight to the point. You've gone over the stuff that a lot of these dudes gloss over, once you have the line in the tree how do you attach it to the wire -- you covered it. I'm bookmarking this video! Fantastic man.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate the feedback and kind words! Thank you. I thought this one did a better job, but there’s always more to say, lol Any suggestions are appreciated. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Can you drive under IMC conditions with all that equipment?
Only with night vision goggles! Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment. See you out there. That is, if I can see over the dash. 73 de Bill
Nice mounting solution! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and getting in on the conversation. Moore Expo opened my eyes to a lot of things. I’ll definitely go again. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I have a Tid and really like it.
Thanks for stopping by. It’s much appreciated! I have the newer, smaller version and I’m loving it. I like those radios. See you out there. 73 de Bill
The brand that turned out to be a disappointment to me was RADTEL. Two became "unreliable". I've also had a Yaesu VX-150 give up the ghost, and the top knob on the Icom V-86 go haywire. The 150 was long out of warranty and Yaesu wanted $45 just to give a repair estimate (not deducted from the repair cost). Landfill. I haven't contacted Icom yet...
Thanks for watching, and taking time out to join in the conversation. I really appreciate it. I’m playing the with the latest H-3 now, and really like it. I still think TIDRADIO is going somewhere with its radios. Thanks for sharing your experiences, and hope it turns out better than not. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I have had mine for a bit and have not had any of the problems people talk about.
Thanks for watching and taking time to join in the conversation. I have had mine since the video, and I haven’t had issues either. Then again, the one I have now is the second version. They sent it to me because Charlie had issues with my first one. I attribute any glitches to rf from the efhw. I also don’t have a super fast speed. So, I’m good with it. See you out there. 73 de Bill
SUWEET!!!!!!! After getting home from Hamvention, I ordered the QMX+ kit for my POTA go kit. I plan on doing most of my POTA from my Kawasaki klr650 adv bike. Wanna be somewhat light and small but…….I’m digging what you did here! So far, I’m using a SOTA beams mast, km4ack efhw, American Morse “DCP” and a bioenno 3ah…..more noodling to come. Also doodling a setup for vhf/uhf via Bluetooth set up for my Kawasaki…..
I love it when someone is really into their kit, and it sounds like you are! Keep having fun with it. I really appreciate you stopping by, watching, and joining the conversation. Come back and share what you find. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I’m working on a low budget 6x10 myself. My original idea was multipurpose; general use trailer, toy hauler (for my Kawasaki klr650), and camper/ham shack. Have it insulated, a couple windows and a max air roof vent. Still noodling with the rest of the layout. Hauled it for the shakedown run from IN to Hamvention and did some camping ….definitely looking forward to trying to have it more complete in hopes to make Huntsville. Thanks for sharing. KD9BPY - Rick
Thanks for stopping by, watching, and sharing your design! I’m glad to meet someone out there also doing this. I wish you’d pulled me to the side at Hamvention. Make sure to get my attention at Huntsville. This build consumes all my time, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. Also, I’m learning a lot. Just “finished” the shower plumbing and feeling content. Come back and talk about your build anytime. See you at Huntsville. 73 de Bill
Off to look at the base of my Chameleon whip to see how it is constructed. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
Thanks for watching and getting in the comments. I appreciate it. I also have two Chameleons, and I think they are made very similar to the Alpha with the milled end. I think mine have a set screw. There are definitely many out there. I don't get rid of my crimped telescopic antennas, but when I'm buying another one I hold off until I find one with the milled end.++++ At any rate, the best antenna is the one we have on us! See you out there. 73 de Bill
THANKS for STOPing BY to see what I'm UP to toDAY! 😄
Dennis! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. You are much appreciated. It was good to hang out once again at Hamvention. Hope to see you at Huntsville! 73 de Bill
It was great talking with you at Hamvention! Thanks for making this video! We're getting this Ham Kit Show Special on the site soon so stay tuned!
Hey! Thanks for stopping by, watching, and taking time to comment. Great product. Every ham should have a set. Hope to see you at Huntsville Hamfest in August. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Looks like you had a great time at Hamvention! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
Thanks for jumping in the comments! I appreciate you stopping by. Yeah, I had a blast. Can’t wait for next year or Huntsville. Hope to see you out there. 73 de Bill
That is a cool product
Kevin! Thanks for watching and getting in there with a comment. They are pretty cool. I haven’t given them the stress test. I forgot to go back buy them, and had to order online. Soon as they get here I will start putting them to work. I’ll let you know. See you out there. 73 de Bill
I know this is old, but I like those large pill containers... what are they (product name, or size)
Thanks for watching and taking the time to join in the conversation. Here’s the Amazon link: amzn.to/4dU4PoE This is one of my most watched videos. There’s another that I think is better. This one I did because I thought I’d missed some things on the first one; How Do I Get My EFHW or Wire Antenna Into the Tree? PART 2 - Details Using a Throwline kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZqMztWGotzNk5M.html Thanks, again. See you out there. 73 de Bill
