I agree with a lot of the comments: Courtney was not a bad character and she was a WAY better friend than Dodie! Miranda wasn’t a good friend to Courtney either. I LOVED this show so much, i rewatched it recently…. And honestly it was very well written for an animated show. Simply loved that show sooooo much

I promise this isn't a jab, but it was very funny when you said it was understandable that Carl was bitter after Blake screamed at him, but didn't mention about Blake feeling understandable even though he was the real victim 😂 Don't worry, I don't think that's what you actually meant but I found (my understanding of) what you said very funny

17:15 they were supposed to look different by the end of the show. Showing time has passed and that they are growing up. The point of Dairens looks was that before he was the nerd with head gear that was a good person bc he had to be to be liked but it gets flipped when he start getting popular and looking more attractive, it’s harder to be a good person when superficial stuff gets in the way and that was part of his arc. Could he be a good person with the superficial things like he was before.

The irony of Mr. sweeny being “evil” is just that he genuinely believes his students are bright and it infuriates him that they choose not to do the work. I mean yeah middle school but it’s funny because he genuinely is excited about his subject and to teach.

I always hated Dodie. I always wondered why Ginger would be friends with her. As an adult I realized it was because a lot of us had that friend. A friend that would throw anyone under the bus to make themselves look better even for a second (sometimes they didn't even think of you as a friend, but pretended so they were not alone) and gaslighting you whenever you start to think about it. As kids we think our friends are our friends no matter what, as adults sometimes you look back and realize you had a Dodie in your life without realizing it. I personally do not like how as adults Ginger is still friends with her. Really, I think it would be once they were out of school they realized they were only friends because they were in school (a place that forces people your age together). Ginger wouldn't want a toxic person like that as an adult ruining her life. I could totally picture Dodie running around doing any interview she could saying whatever embarrassing story she could think of so she could have 5 minutes of fame and gaslighting Ginger into thinking it was ok. Courtney is a friend I picture she would have as an adult. Maybe once they were done with school they would find each other again and become friends. Sometimes once the pressure of school is done you realize someone you kept away could have been an amazing friend. Courtney deserved a lot better and she was Ginger's true friend. Sad that her fake friend is still her friend and we see nothing of the one that really cared for her.

I won't lie Tommy and Chucky were my favorite characters when it was Rugrats. The way they portrayed Tommy and all grown up I still like him he does eventually learn from his mistakes. Chucky I couldn't stand his character the more the seasons went on. Even as a teenager I noticed all the things with him but the episode with Kimi and her liking Tommy made me just hate his character completely. It makes me wish Angelica or Susie was part of that episode. Angelica wouldn't care but will put Chucky in his place and tell him he has no right to tell his sister who the date or like. Susie would do the same thing but be more gentle about it then Angelica and he listens to her more than anyone else.

Great video. It's worth noting that, after 12 years and 19 other original Nicktoons, All Grown Up was quite possibly Nickelodeon's first original animated show misfire. Seriously, look it up - just about every Nicktoon from the original 3 (Rugrats/Doug/Ren & Stimpy) in 1991 were legends of 90s and early 2000s kids TV. The only exception might be Oh Yeah! Cartoons (a pretty transparent ripoff of CN's What-a-Cartoon Show) - but even there, one might consider OYC a spiritual sibling to KaBlam! - and in any case, it was a cartoon anthology without a stable set of characters or narrative, so I don't think it really counts in the same way as All Grown Up. Besides exhibiting a mind-boggling level of success and skill/talent at making original cartoons that resonated with kids, it's notable that the first time Nick stumbled in creating Nicktoons was when they took power away from the creatives and put it in the hands of executives pushing what would make Viacom money. As you pointed out, All Grown Up feels forced - and I would say, corporate in its nature. In terms of another animated icon of the time, it's the Poochie to Itchy and Scratchy (ie, Rugrats) - a safe, focus group-approved, parent-authorized spinoff that sacrificed creative integrity for maximum profit potential. Honestly, it's pretty representative of what was going on at Nick in general at the time - and the subsequent failure of most Nicktoons that followed (save for My Life As A Teenage Robot, Avatar and Danny Phantom) is pretty good corroborating evidence.

I also assumed that ginger was a girlz show, which meant that it would be lame. Because when I was a little girl, the absolute LAMEST and MOST BORING properties were all marketed to girls, which very much poisoned anything that even looked like it might be girly

Halfway through your review now This is 100% a girlz show I would have HATED this as a child And as an adult this would still definitely not be my cup of tea It’s like a way softer semi-realistic middle school, which irl is actually traumatic and involves a lot of children being preyed upon by the teachers

This is absolutely the definitive work on the history and complex story that is As Told By Ginger, the absolutely last word on one of the best young adult TV shows ever made. There may be other videos that come after this which talk about ATBG, but I don't think any could cover it with the depth, respect and emotional investment that this one does. As one who grew up before ATBG's time but still came to appreciate it later in life, you have my enduring respect and appreciation. Awesome job!!

You do realize that Chuckie has good intentions of trying to cheer Kimi up when changing her room because he thinks it's what made her upset but didn't know the real reason til Kimi told him eventually. That shows how much he cares for Kimi despite some rough spots at times and wanted her to be happy again.

This show marked the end of an era for Nickelodeon, a time when every show was an instant classic. In the 90s, an entire generation was born and grew up with Nickelodeon's animated shows. Right after this generation grew up, Nick completely lost its way. Of course, there were some good shows after 2004 like ATLA or Danny Phantom, but the thing is, they were pitched and targeted to an audience that had already grown up or was about to do so. I was born in the year 2000, so I was never the target audience for these shows. Of course, I watched every one of them and liked them; they were a part of my childhood, but they were just reruns. At some point, when I was around 7 years old, my cable network removed Nickelodeon from the channels list, and I was very sad because of it. It felt almost like I wouldn't be able to watch my favorite shows again and see some new great shows. When I turned 17, I decided to close that gap and realized that I hadn't missed anything. I'd already seen all the best. But it wasn't enough. I wanted to rewatch every show that I had watched as a kid. And I did that. I started with Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, and As Told by Ginger was the last one. And what a finish it was. I didn't expect such topics, plots, and character development from a Nickelodeon show that wasn't ATLA. So, it became one of my favorite shows from Nickelodeon. I enjoyed this "Nicktoons marathon," but I don't think that I'm going to do that again. I was able to stop nostalgia from fooling me into thinking that everything about the past is great. Sometimes it's not great; it's just OK.

1:18 -It wasnt even the first Nickelodeon parody of it. Remember that show about a laid back kid in a wheelchair? The episode starts off with him feeling like the Yugioh parody is a fad and not that cool but gets super hooked into it real fast. He and his friends however learn they have equally amtch3d decks and rhe only way to winnis to get the super rare Faceless Jeff card. Thats the only name that i rememebr since it is so doofy and hilarius for the trump card if a TCG but feels like it could be real. The bully gets a pack in his lunch from his mom and of course pulls a faceless Jeff. The main characrers prokises to be his slave for a day in exchange for the card and has to learn a lesson on self worth over material objects. If i remember correctly, he gets the card but feels empty and a flood of copoes make it into the game not long after when the fad fades.
