EDIT: Part 2 to this video is now LIVE! This is also a previously-pinned comment with some clarifications. As a result of the discussions I'm seeing, I wanna concede a point I made in the video as well as stand by a point that I made. 1. Lots of people have said that they attended middle schools that had a similar grade structure to the one in All Grown Up, so I'm going to concede. I did my best to research school structures in the United States to see if it was a common thing and from what I could determine, it was not. It most certainly was not how my school district had things structured (7th and 8th grade only), but I can't really argue against the real-life experiences of you all. I also saw someone mention how it's similar to the school in Bob's Burgers, which is also right. Although I never really liked that school setup in Bob's Burgers either for basically the same reasons, even if it is a SIGNIFICANTLY better-written show. But the point has been proven to me and I thank everyone for being so kind and chill about it, especially since it's such a big talking point in the video. 2. As for the point that I'm standing by, this thankfully hasn't been super prevalent, but a small handful of comments about the same thing stuck with me and I just want to address them once and only once. I refer to Chuckie's behavior towards Kimi's lack of including him on her family tree as "typical toxic white person behavior." I've had a few people claim me to be racist against white people as a result. And admittedly, this made me laugh. Not only because I'm a white dude, but also because within the context of the episode, Kimi (who is not white) is the real victim. While Chuckie, who is white, plays it like he is. The entire episode leading up to Chuckie's blow-up featured all of Kimi's friends acting intolerant towards the elements of Japanese culture she was trying to share with them, only for Chuckie to yell at her for not focusing more attention on his own family lineage. It comes across VERY POORLY when viewed through a modern lens, thus it's a poorly-aged episode. And if you don't see it that way and believe I'm being unfair or racist towards white people for a comment as tame as that, I don't know what to tell you. I think it says a lot more about you than me. Thank you once more for all of the support! I hope to see you all again for the As Told By Ginger video!

strongly disagree with you there, I personally never liked how Bob's Burgers was written, I just find Tina and Linda's voices super-grating(seriously why were they voiced by a man? There's no good reason to deny female VAs work, I just can't take those characters seriously with how grating their voices are). All Grown Up I found way more enjoyable by comparison. I didn't mind that lineage episode too much but I can see how parts of it didn't age well.

"I'm white so I can't be racist against white people, Chuckie is responsible for his white friends and should be held to a different standard as Kimi, and if you don't agree, you're the racist one." Not everybody agrees with this "modern lense" you're referring to.

It proved that there was another side to Angelica. She did have the ability to love. If Angelica had parents that actually parented her right she probably wouldn't have been as resentful to the babies. Her mother ignored her and her father gave her everything she wanted just so he wouldn't have to deal with her. I could see her relating well with Helga from Hey Arnold.

I think that "All Grown Up!" as a show having an "identity crisis" through it's characters isn't a bad thing but rather the most sincere and realistic thing to have happen to the franchise. Seriously, having all the kids act in that "faux adult" way was the most legit thing I've seen in a long time. Admittedly it sucks to see Tommy and Chuckie turn into douchebags somewhat. Also Angelica getting some push back and consequences for her bratty and entitled behaviour was cathartic to see.

Exactly tbh. One of the things I appreciated about this show is they didn't tried to replicate to much from Rugrats, instead they tried to develop these characters as realistic as possible. Obviously, it's not a perfect show, I agree about the sentiments that they should've been a bit older but other than that, I think the producers did a pretty good job on distincting this show from its parent series when it comes to the characters. For me, some honorable mentions definitely go to the episode where Angelica stays with the Carmichaels for a week, and the episode where she gets a crush on her substitute teacher. Both of these episodes speak to that idea of challenging her attitude and way of interacting with the world, and both capture her age really well. With the Carmichaels, she's forced to actually contribute to the well being of Susie and her family, have responsibilities, chores, and learn the good things she has come form the generosity and hard work of others. She has to learn, grow, fail, and learn again that the satisfaction she gets is by following the parents rules, and playing them to her own advantage. When given the opportunity, she really has the skills to be a productive, well rounded individual. With the crush on her substitute, she finally has a teacher who won't bow to her every whim. He's a mature adult who sees potential in her as a student, and refuses to let her argue her way out of growing or working to achieve her goals. Int he process she realizes the power she has in her way of negotiating and arguing, but it takes getting her heart broken and realizing her own potential to ultimately get her what she wants. He challenges her and forces her to grow the same way that Susie does, but in a way she's completely unaccustomed to: as an adult who won't do whatever she says. It's also another example of Angelica thinking she's all grown up, but in reality isn't mature enough or ready to do so without realizing what power and talent she does have.

I wanted to have a section talking about Angelica staying with the Carmichael's, but it didn't make the final cut unfortunately. It's definitely one of Angelica's better ones considering she's got everyone vocally against her and she actually goes out of her way to change. It's one of the better ones. As for the substitute teacher one, I don't personally like it very much. Ginger has almost the exact same setup in an episode and does it in a much better way, at least in my opinion.

I remember watching this as a kid and finding it really weird that characters that were supposed to be 10-11 had girlfriends. And not in the cute playground way but in a way that seemed like a real relationship, with dating, kissing, and intense breakups. It was weird not only in that it happened but that the parents kind of let it happen? My folks weren't strict at all but even I wouldn't have been allowed to date at 10.

There are definitely a lot of unrealistic aspects (like all the unsupervised dates Tommy and Rachel seemed to go on), but the rest of it was pretty spot-on to how kids in my grade behaved when they started dating in 5th and 6th grade: the secret kissing, the intense but ridiculous breakups, the whole “you’re my best friend and that’s my sibling!” thing, and so on. I 100% agree that All Grown Up paints an idealized and very unrealistic preteen experience, but the dating was pretty strangely accurate to how things went down at my middle school.

That episode of AGU! where they find Reptar underground in the backyard is one of the highlights for the show for me. It's one of those moments that make a strong connection to the original series by how Reptar impacts their lives in such a meaningful way. The biggest example is how Chuckie got a step mom and sister. Love it when we see continuity in such a way. Couldn't help but tear up a bit when I saw that episode.

I really wished we had the Rugrats having babies as the new Rugrats. Mainly because the new show basically took all the adults from the old show and rewrote them so they’d be similar to modern day parents. There was a golden opportunity to show how the way they were raised as kids affected the kind of parents they were, plus you didn’t have to have every single Rugrat be a parent. Just imagining Dil as the weird uncle or the interesting idea of one of the twins having kids while the other didn’t is cool to me. Hell an entire B plot about Didi butting in on parenting writes itself. Unfortunately, marketability runs things so they decided to go full reboot instead.

I also agree with you on the time jump. They should’ve done the show where it was Tommy‘s first day of high school as a freshman for the first episode. Then they could’ve ended the show with the Rugrats graduating high school in truly becoming grown-ups. Also as a filmmaker, I can definitely relate to Tommy’s character. I am myself in the Director, who just distributed my first feature film, directed numerous documentaries, and I’ve worked on too many shows the count. That being said, you’re correct the skill sets that Tommy’s doing in the way he’s talking about Film is how people in my media productions class in high school. Would talk about Film. It doesn’t really make sense for some 11 year old kid to be acting like that. In fact, overall, I think the show just would’ve made a lot more sense if they were high school kids. From all the Freedom that they have from their parents, the relationship dramas, and people coming into their own independently on things that they love to do. Is all mine says that people go through when you’re going in high school not when you’re going through elementary school.

@@eatatjoes6751 well, that was the thing even when the series got approved and they had the first season come out I believe I was in like third grade by that point and even I thought it was weird why are they only in fifth grade. Because by that point, I realized in new fifth graders personally that they were growing up. They were just kids slightly in a higher grade than me. Like I said, if I was to go back and write that show, I wouldn’t be a season one in freshman year of high school and have it on their opening days starting high school. And I would’ve ended the show with him graduating high school looking onto what the future possibly could be for them essentially ending the show with them growing up Going back to the title. All of the issues that Tommy goes through the growing pains, the relationship problems. Those are all issues that me and my friends could relate to when we were in high school kids not fifth graders. They couldn’t even start of the show with them all riding bicycles and as the later seasons happened had them getting driver license and having them get into some issues that characters like Drake and Josh got into maybe into going to a party and underage drinking and having the police busted up . I don’t know there’s just a lot more possibilities that you could’ve done with them being in a high school instead of a fifth grader

Wouldn’t Dil be 10 if it was 10 years later? And let’s be fair…Hey Arnold, while it was much better written than All Grown Up, had 9 year olds constantly dealing with problems unrealistic for their ages too.

  • @CamHennings

Tommy says in the show that he's 10, at least in the first season. So that would make Dil 9. But again, they make the age thing unclear after awhile and I think they did that on purpose. As for Hey Arnold, you're right about it being unrealistic at times, however whenever they went into unrealistic storylines, it usually served the purpose of teaching more important lessons. Like the Lockjaw episode wasn't realistic in having a kid and his grandma break into an aquarium and successfully freeing a turtle, but the lesson was a good one to learn. All Grown Up didn't really ever do things like that, as it was more unrealistic for plot convenience rather than story potential, if that makes sense.

That's actually a really good point. The All Grown Up special says "10 YEARS LATER" so why isn't Dil 10 years old? Tommy was already around when Didi got pregnant with Dil, Im assuming at least a few months old, so he should be a year older, making him 11. Phil and Lil are roughly the same age as Tommy, making them 10-11 (iirc they had a birthday episode, forget what age they were turning but should be within a year of Tommy, turning 10 or 11). Chuckie was the oldest of the cage Rugrats at 1, so he should be close to turning 12 if he wasn't already. Angelica should be abt 13, maybe 14. Edit: Angelica had her 13th birthday at a point, so that makes sense. But if she was already 3 during the show, and it was 10 (whole) years later, she would be turning 14, right?

The episode where Kimi is connecting with her Japanese culture was so hard to watch in 2023. 1. The horrible depictions of japanese culture with Kimi's bento box being fixed with nothing but raw octopus tentacles grossing out everyone and everyone dumping out their tea during her tea ceremony plus the constant bird poop joke. Fun fact white face makeup never was made from bird poop. 2. Like you amazingly said, the focus on Chuckie's feelings during the episode. The utter lack of self awareness and sympathy he has is insane. The fact that he gets upset that Kimi referred to her father as "my dad" (she refers to both her first and adoptive father as her dads and doesn't make distinctions like "my real dad") 3. Lastly the fact that everyone is extremely annoyed at the fact that she's embracing her culture citing her food and clothing as embarrassing and wanting her to "go back to the way she was" and act like herself. I can see how they tried with their inclusion of Kabuki, tea ceremonies and origami despite some being more inaccurate than others. But unfortunately the urge to portray Asian food as disgusting was too strong smh. It's especially ridiculous considering how they showed the characters reactions to Tommy attending Hebrew school vs Kimi taking an interest in her culture. Everyone encourages Tommy to take an interesting in his religion/culture even if it means they won;t spend as much time with him citing how important it is. Enough dissecting a forgotten episode of an almost forgotten show A really good episode I liked was the twin's birthday episode even as an adult I find it so amazing how despite being embarrassed at first Lil liked her bra and was excited about changing. Every part was just unbearable so relatable in the best possible way

There's an episode of Spongebob where they're mocking Sandy and her culture for the full episode until she snaps. I used to watch both this show and the OG Rugrats religiously as a nine, ten, eleven year old myself. I even remember feeling confused and disappointed that most kids in that age range don’t act, think, dress, talk, live and get treated like teenagers in real life like how it was with the kids on the show, lol. I love your concept for a better season 2+ opening. And as for the show itself, I love what they did with Dil and the personality they gave him here with him being obsessed with aliens and paranormal stuff and always saying and doing the most random or bizarre things, especially since I was really interested in the same things he liked at that age. In hindsight, even though I don’t know if the similarities were intentional, I think Dil in “All Grown Up!” was almost like an American boy version of Pippi Longstocking because, for example, they’re both nine years old, they both have red hair, they even both have a habit of walking backwards, and they both always do things their own way without regard for social norms. It’s actually really funny. I honestly really like how from season 2 onwards, along with the art style change, the kids mostly all got new hairstyles and a new rotation of clothes for each of them.

Only under 2 conditions or as Genie put it, “A few, uh, provisos, a couple of quid pro quos”. 1. Stu cannot be killed off just because his original voice actor Jack Riley passed away. Also an advantage animation has over live-action is that when a voice actor passes away, they can easily be replaced. Plus, I see plenty of fun opportunities Stu could have as a grandfather, especially when it comes to making toys for his grandchildren that are too good to go to waste. 2. This one is probably going to be controversial, but the Rugrats cannot be married to any of the main female characters. I know many like to ship Tommy with Kimi or Chuckie with Angelica, but I just don’t see them as couples. They just seem more like friends and sometimes that’s reality. Not everyone marries their closest friend since childhood. Besides, I feel like even if the reboot had been the original Rugrats as parents and focused on their kids, they wouldn’t have had Tommy and Kimi or Chuckie and Angelica as couples regardless. I know it’s going to break a lot of hearts for those that were hoping they’d be a couple, but sometimes a part of life is learning to deal with disappointments and coping with the fact their expectations weren’t met. “Other than that, you’ve got it.” -Genie.

I would disagree with your statement; even though Chucky did some bad things, he is, without a doubt, the most forgiving and loyal character. For example, in the episode, Truth Or Consequences, when Tommy caught every embarrassing video of every character, everyone hated him for that, except for Chucky; even though he’d been humiliated by his own best friend, he still, in a hand wavy way, forgave him. Another notable example, in the episode, All Broke Up, when Tommy finally confessed that he’d been lying to his friends about his depression, everyone hated him for it. Chucky had been upset with Tommy about this, too, but in the end, when Tommy tried to talk on the phone with the others, but wouldn’t talk to him, while he was actually depressed, Chucky, himself, came over, and comforted Tommy when he was in his deepest blues. Just from these two examples, this proves that, even though, him being insecure, and unpopular all the time, Chucky is the most selfless character throughout the series, and the bigger man in the end.

You're bringing up a lot of valid points and I won't even say you're wrong. What I think is the issue here is the lack of consistency. I think in TP + KF, Chuckie goes against the good will that he could have potentially accumulated. Like within the span of about 12 hours, he was fully ready to throw away his friendship with Tommy based on the idea of Tommy and/or his sister potentially having a crush on the other. What you describe is what Chuckie should have been more consistently like, but his bad moments have a tendency to overshadow the good ones.

The All Broke Up episode doesn't make any sense, like Tommy was being uncharacteristically stupid as if he had forgotten the whole "Truth or Consequences" fiasco and his rightful character change in being respectful towards his friends. In the other episode, he little ruins his friends day, and lets that ruin his own, and he's left crying "Why is this happening to me?" and he fails to grow. He should have dealt with this situation to his mother as she cared about his lover and would help him discuss his feelings to his friends properly, and he's grown to appreciate her trust at the end of the RV special (being that he had gotten his right kiss from the lover). This is one of the reasons that S5 SHOULD NOT HAVE happened. It contradicted what all the previous season(s) were leading up to exclusive to reach the 52/55 episode standard and it is one of the worst Nickelodeon seasons IMO.

And then you ended up diving into it an hour later--the kids don't work as characters in large part because the show hasn't committed to what age it actually wants them to be. Like the writers or producers decided that they actually wanted to make them into high schoolers, maybe 15 to 17 or thereabouts, or even college students, but everybody already committed to making them sixth graders. Dil always made me think he was the autistic representation in the show because he’s SO weird and he doesn’t seem to think anything he says or does is strange or out of pocket (like asking the lunch lady why she has a hair net in her head but not her arms. Neurotypical people aren’t going to ask such questions in earnest, they’re asking them facetiously. Dil asks them in earnest because he doesn’t understand, and by proxy offends the lunch lady). I never understood his character’s shtick when I was watching the show back then, but it’s all I can see now.

I can definitely understand that viewpoint and you could definitely be right. He's autistic-coded for sure, but I'm not sure if they had that in mind when writing his character, especially since they mention how Phil and Lil dropped him on his head. I just don't think they thought of those kinds of things back then, unlike today in modern character writing.

I really like that at one point you mention one of the reasons why the studio would be opposed to this show. I think that As Told By Ginger is seriously an underrated nicktoon, one that tackled the kind of coming of age drama comedy style that All Grown Up lacked. But one show is much more remembered because it was part of an established franchise. Not that All Grown Up is bad necessarily. I actually still have fond memories of it, but I was still really baffled at the time that this got all of the attention when there was a better show doing the same kinds of things airing at the time that no one seems to remember.

sidelining the parents on paper makes sense but for me it was a huge missed opportunity. I don't have kids but from talking with my mom i can tell that having a teen kid around is a learning experience for both. Since a lot of media around pre-teens/teens usually puts a lot of emphasis on the kids it would have been really cool to have a cartoon that has a more split focus on the adults and the kids. It could have given them the chance to tell a complex story about their relationships like in Rugrats. I also think it could have been a neat way to show that kids do grow to be more independent, but just because you're not an infant anymore doesn't mean that your parents do nothing. You might not hang out with your parents EVERY DAY, but in a healthy relationship you're probably going to ask for advice, hang out, learn from them, and small stuff like having dinner together every day. Showing off that dynamic could have been neat.

Honestly Loud House is popular for a reason, it's in a bit of a "decent rut" rn but like when it hits it hits because some episodes can manage to bring the best out of the characters and how they bounce off of each other. It's the closest a Nick show has gotten to at least capturing a semblance to that character chemistry that Rugrats had as a comedic cartoon. CLEARLY not the same and different but there's enough to draw comparisons between it and All Grown Up.

It's funny, but I do actually like the outdated lingo that some of the kids use, because when I hear that I just think "oh yeah, that's something they DEFINITELY heard their parents say", and one of the most satisfying aspects of this show is how much consideration is done to sort of make everyone's lineage believable. From something as simple as "Tommy has purple hair because Stu does" all the way to "this is what Kimi's family and culture is like", it's fun to have that sort of thing. BUT, yet again, it does speak to the clash of the ages they were _given_ and the ages they clearly wanted to _write_ for. It's very reminiscent of high schoolers caught between wanting to reflect their parents' values and wanting to instead embrace the new values they're learning at the same time.

Oh man. I wasn’t super attached to rugrats growing up but I definitely remember all grown up. As an adult, when I hear people talk about shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, RugRatz, Hey Arnold, etc. and the themes the shows had, they completely go over your head as a kid but as an adult and hearing how real some of these shows were is kind of mind blowing when these cartoons are made for kids yet, when you grow up. You can’t help but wonder what went over your head and when you do re-watch. You find yourself relating more to the adults and feeling nostalgic about being a kid. I had to comment because as soon as I heard Get It Together from LittleBigPlanet and it really solidified this video to me, even before getting into the rest of it. It made me extremely nostalgic and it reminded me of those times as a kid when I could go to cartoons and video games as an escape from the family dysfunction and school. When you’re a kid, all that matters is fun. You grow up when you realize that fun isn’t always the best option. Amazing video, I can’t wait to see more! Edit: also wanna add that yeah! Nostalgia can be a liar cuz you can grow up with a show and be like “This is SO good. So relatable!” And then you actually rewatch it as an adult and you’re just like, “actually… it’s okay.” Which is probably a reminder that we have grown up and changed as people. (Deep I know-)

I think part of the point with Chuckie and it is kinda stated in that clip with Kimi is that basically like many individuals he is surronded by people who make him feel like he always has to be number 2. He wants to engage and tries to do so through things like how he treats his sister and some of the actions he does, but in the end, his own inability to do so comfortability is what sidelines him. In some way, the tommy/kimi part is just a combination of the two extreme of this not really that he is in love with Kimi, but rather that he has to be number 2 and that he wants to be included. It is actually kinda a more natural direction for his character from Rugrats if I am honest compared to what some of the characters went.

i came to a semi-related realization watching this: kids (and young teens) are rarely ever drawn towards cartoons about other kids their age. as a kid you wanna be batman, not robin. you wanna be like the ninja turtles, the power rangers. even in cartoons like Fairly Oddparents, Timmy isnt the most beloved and popular character, the adults are. thats why i agree with your statement that the perfect age to watch this show about tweens is slightly younger than a tween. kids are always growing up, developing. they wanna look into the future, into new exciting worlds. thats why cartoons that force a kid main character are almost never that successful.

Thank you so much for this video!!! You said most of my feelings for the show when I saw it years ago on Nickelodeon. I honestly would have preferred if All Grown Up! Was in fact like you know, rugrats but having the chars age up slowly over time. Not plopping them down in set ages. And the thing you touched up I also enjoyed was the fact the characters were literally 10-13 years old doing things that honestly.... You'd see TEENAGERS or like 15-17 year olds doing. None of the situations they got in I could see a 10 YEAR OLD getting into.... Like I never knew 10 year olds going to starbucks, trying to date, or going to the mall that much, or most of the things Tommy and the Gang got into it felt like way too older for them so you can tell the writers really wanted to write them much much older because the situations just didn't add up with their current age sets. Plus how they changed some characters did suck to see. I hated how under utilized Susie was again in this series just like Rugrats. Sure she got some shine but they still imo barely did anything with her aside from making her always sing.
