“[There is the] potential of alpha-GPC to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) because it serves as a substrate for the synthesis of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in the gut, and TMAO is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in people with CVD and in mechanistic studies. The author goes on to state that “in healthy people this may not be something to worry about, but in people with a high risk of CVD it may be prudent to consider the added risk” (Murray & Michaux, 2023). Love Riptoe but totally disagree with his position on the abs. Direct ab training is absolutely necessary. Yes, you get "strong" abs for stability but let's be honest, the ANTERIOR chain BARELY get worked like the posterior chain gets worked in squats and deadlifts. Now what you do for the anterior chain is important but I WOULD ABSOLUTELY add anterior chain work.

I always like interesting conversations on topics other than fitness. Let me know when your first work of fiction comes out. I'll pick it up and give it a read. I dabble in fiction myself. I always like seeing someone else's writing style and interests. I know you said you were doing maybe some historical fiction.

I am trying to lose chest muscle and hammy/leg muscle in the thigh. Would you recommend I take a step back from Muay Thai class as it’s pretty high intensity cardio that might maintain my mass?

  • @MikeMatthewsFitness

If you're trying to lose muscle mass, I don't think quitting Muy Thai will do the trick. Try decreasing volume by only working chest once a week 9-12 sets.

On strict dieting. Something at work upset me. It's usually being mis-spoken to and I have to zip my mouth. It's even more stressful when I fight for myself. But anyway. I would circle McDonald parking lot for a about three times. Then get in the drive thru the line. Then a car before the speaker drive out of line. Then while driving away say this is stupid. What am I doing. But get a block away and turn back to get in the back of line because even having the thought of crashing so bad made me feel weak on the diet plan so I would eat and feel better. Then start the next 4 miserable days to get back into fat burn. Such torture. I've been in a bad place for 10 years. That's why I've only began to live my life with sanity and integrity for myself. When I signed up with Dr. BACON just this past Thursday as said before. I appreciate him and his passion for caring every detail on the head. And the supplements he suggested.. well ... I've never taken them before and I wake up feeling great. I can't wait to see what I will do for myself...with his help THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO

I can't tell anyone what I'm doing. I got a long ways to go. If I talk about it to people I work with or others who don't have weight issues. It's like taking my power away. I just zip my mouth. These people never work out, they are not ashamed to tell others wow you gained weight when they see a friend." (Wish I was kidding). They have seen me lose 86 lbs on a strict diet and gain it all back here and there 40 on 40 off yoyo so I can understand they don't take me seriously. But the minute I start saying I'm losing weight or going to the gym. They give no real " good or good for you" they look like I stold their soul. 10 days later, they told me they lost 10lbs. Very interesting. People are happier when it's you and not them. They don't even have a weight problem they just think you're going to be better than them. Well, thank you, I didn't know I had that kind of power, lol

Stress is real !! It can literally hurt you. I never believed that anxiety can effect you other then just feeling sad. I went on the scale one morning (about 2 months giving up on a diet and trying this and that) feeling defeated. But I went on the scale and in just 6 days I had gained 7lbs. I freaked the Frick out so bad that I ended up crying (feeling failure, lost and alone) and there was an extreme pain in my middle finger. So bad I was going to call 911. Never felt this before. But thats a lie. The previous week. One day I wake up limping in left leg. Felt like gout. Then the next day it was my back on the right side. Then the next day was my left hand near thumb. Mean while where there is new pain. The pain in other places are gone. So my body has really been stressed since a few years but this year as early as February. My weight was way out of control. I had no agenda when I woke up. Just eat what my son and hubby eat. Eating out. Alcohol (1 beer) but still. The alcohol was to just chill. It also started with my medical doctor put me on PHENTERMINE when I was asking for Ozempic. I couldn't do the pill it made me feel dizzy and stargazed look all day. Feeling empty. 2 days and that was enough I started with Dr.BACON on Thursday and today is Sunday. I'm down 10lbs and happy. I feel productive I'm meal prepping and eating regular food, fruit, veggies, even a piece of chocolate allotted. I can do this! I just need to learn how to work out like a boss lol 😆

I've been on a strick diet. The past 10 years. No fruit and zero cheat. If you cheat. It's basically start over to get back into "fatburn". Feeling failure on this diet (it would work but sometimes you want something) , ignorant (to find help, lazy (not cooking my own food), not fitting into clothes, not appreciated, validation ... you name it brought stress and made me hate myself on the daily. What I want to say is that when I did eat off that plan. Did I eat the forbidden healthy fruit - NOPE! A apples would be the farthest from mind. It was always rice, bakery , candy, CHIPS. Never a fruit. So when you Take out food groups from your diet. Your already in Anxiety mode.. Some how just like Adam and Eve. You just want to test your plan or boarders you agreed at the beginning that needs to happen to make change. But Dr. Bacon has changed my thinking about food and mostly myself in less then a week. I feel overwhelmed but excited at the same time with learning all these new things he's been teaching me. I got a ways to go but already feeling good in the 1st week.

Another useful tip I learned from Drs is to increase the resistant starches in high carb foods, such as potatoes, bread, pasta, rice etc by chilling them overnight or freezing them then reheating. The body can’t digest resistant starches but your good bacteria loves resistant starches and feasts on it. I also learned that some people are far more sensitive to carb’s and their dietary effects than others. Watch ‘The Truth About Carb’s’ and you can find out if you are by doing ‘the cracker test’.

It is fascinating to me that a supposed PhD would argue against progressive tension overload as a driver on hypertrophy. But this is Milo "Lengthened partials are the only two words I Know" Wolf we're talking about. Perhaps he could explain the following. 1. Literally 99.9999% of training studies ever done add weight to the bar over time. I can think of maybe 5 that haven't in decades of work. There might be a couple that I missed. 2. In the 52 set study Milo has such a hardon for they state: "To ensure appropriated stimulus and standardize the left of effort between the experimental groups, load was also progressed according to repetition zone throughout the intervention period." Translation: they applied progressive tension overload over time along with the volume changes. Note: in the discussion of that study, the researchers themselves state that the small difference in growth isn't worth the roughly 2.5 times greater volume/time investment. It also only used quads. Pray tell how does doctor Milo plan to apply that to the roughly 8 primary muscle groups (chest, back, delts, biceps, triceps, quads, hamstrings, calves). 400+ hard sets/week. Give me a break. 3. In his own recent study on lengtehend partials, it states "Barbell load was increased in 0.25-0.5kg increments when the participant was able to perform 20+ repetitions with full ROM on the first set. " Translation: they applied progressive tension overload in addition to what they were testing. 4. Why he bothered to build up to a 400+ squat (claimed on his website)? If progressive tension overload doesn't matter, why isn't he just squatting 135 for volume. I can think of two reasons he'd say something so utterly dumb. 1. He's got something to sell and wants to sound edgy and contrary 2. He's still butthurt over me and, due to that, is required by NPD law, to argue the opposite of what I (correctly) claim. Just another insecure child in an industry full of 'em. Without progressive tension overload OVER TIME, it's not training and anyone with any real-world training knowledge knows that. Endurance athletes don't just do longer durations without going faster. Neither do sprinters. If you don't progress the load, it's not training. To argue against that shows an ignorance of epic proportion. I'm not saying volume doesn't matter. To state progressive overload is of minimal or no importance simply proves the tragedy that is the fitness industry. And why a 24 year old, PhD or not, is still a know nothing 24 year old. One who's own statements contradict not only nearly every study ever done, but his own studies, along with his own personal training style. In a less generous mood I might call him another liar in an industry full of them. Instead I'll simply call him inconsistent in what he says versus what he actually does.

Lyle, I have been adding reps to most of my lifts as a progressive overload. Am I wrong in this, and should I actually putting more weight on the bar. I'm 46 and joint pain is my main cause of adding reps rather then weight and I try and stick to higher rep ranges 15-30. Then once I reach the higher rep ceiling then I would add a little weight. So a double progression.

Trained with higher volumes 12-20 per week per muscle for years and just couldn't recover from it. Started getting lots of aches and pains which continue 'til this day. Dropped down to 5-10 sets per week per muscle. Started gaining strength a lot as an intermediate and pains and aches went away for the most part. Wasn't my cup of tea. I can push my sets so hard and I just can't recover from higher volumes with my intensity of training. Been training my whole life and it seems to impact it a lot. Just start low and move from there to find own best volumes. For most it's 5-15 sets per week per muscle.
