The wacking the magazine thing also came from the need to make sure the ammo was at the back of the mag, which helped prevent jamming. That was what they taught us in the Air Force in the 80's. We were deployable as aircraft maintainers, so we had to qualify with M-16s, but we would only be using weapons as a last ditch thing, so they gave us junky Vietnam era M-16s, and when training, not seating the bullets really did seem to cause more jams, but keeping it clean was the biggest deal.

the reason the rifles were sent without cleaning kits was they weren't supposed to need it. Because the new type of barrel had a coating that was to help keep it clean longer . but it was also more expensive so someone decided to use uncoated barrels to get the rifles out faster. unfortunatly they did need the cleaning kits. so ya it was a massive FUBAR

My dad was a Vietnam vet, and the A1 was his rifle. He got to Nam in ‘69, and by then, they had got a lot of the kinks out. When it was first issued, most of the men had never fired it, they were handed the rifle, and no cleaning kit, since it supposedly didn’t need to be cleaned, and sent in to battle! They quickly found out that they definitely needed to be cleaned! They also cut corners on the barrels. The early ones were not chrome lined, and contributed to some of the issues. On top of being told they didn’t need to clean the rifle, the early ammo used ball powder that burned especially dirty, which compounded the issues.

One of the other things that caused issues for the M-16 in 'Nam was the fact that the ammo the military manufactured for it purposely used the wrong powder on top of not issuing cleaning kits. Why would they do that you ask? Great question. It's because the Army Material Command wanted the M-14 battle rifle to be the standard issue rifle and had in fact rigged the tests to keep the M-14 in service over the M-16. It was a huge bureaucratic battle that the then Secretary of Defense stepped in and made the M-16 the new standard issue rifle for the US armed forces. Army Materials Command didn't like that this was done counter to their desires and so they set it up for failure in the field.

There was also the jamming from getting dust and dirt in the mechanism. Unlike an AK, the M16's had tight tolerances. So they could get jammed easily from dirt or sand. I think the A2 was where they added the forward assist. My Grandfather had an FFL in the 60's, and I remember him bringing home 2 new AR-15's in 1969. I was 11 at the time. He taught me how to shoot it. The most versatile firearm platform there is. I have a "pistol" in 300 Blackout, and a 20 inch AR10 in 6.5 Creedmore. One for hunting in the woods, and one for calling long distance. My next one will be a BCA in 8.6 Blackout. Im really intrigued by a barrel with a 1 in 3 twist rate (bit of a science nerd), that trades forward energy for rotational energy to still deliver a massive energy transfer at conact. Subsonic, suppressed must sound like a pellet gun. Thanks Crispy!
