Kennan's mechanic is the type of guy that can afford to buy a hypercar or two.

Is the cost of the car included in that figure? What can you sell it for X divided by 8 years...

Thanks for reminding me that I don't want a German car. I would hate myself for spending that much on a car.

I think that this description shows a common error in owning this car. Specifically, I am referring to doing piecemeal engine repairs. The two big ones are lower oil pan/rod bearings and then a little later the timing chain guides. For ~$30K you can get a complete engine rebuild by Peter in the S62 shop. They are experts in this engine and this way you solve all the issues at the same time. This is approximately what was spent on just the chain guides and rod bearings. If you add all the other repairs chasing oil leaks you probably spent over $30k. With a full rebuild you also get new rings, resurfaced cylinders, all new bearings (rods and mains), new head gaskets, valve stem seals, etc. Once the engine is approaching 200K and now 20+ years old, I think a full rebuild by an expert is the way to go if you plan on keeping the car for a long time. Now that you have this video up, would be great if you can do an update on an annual basis. While a lot of common failures have been fixed, my guess is every few years you are likely to continue to require major engine repairs.

Do you own one? I’ve been strongly considering buying one and have no issues affording the maintenance or doing basic work myself (fluids, brakes, that kind of thing) but the realities of maintenance costs are still freaking me out. Always wanted one but $8k a year average on maintenance just seems ridiculous

I knew it even before it came up in the video, as I myself had to spend about a month and a half with the car down last august, as I too found bits of plastic U guide clips in my oil pickup screen. I dove in and did all of the work myself using the BMW TIS i had to rent, M5board and youtube videos as a guide. BMW dealer quoted me $16,000 for that job and NEVER would have replaced all of the "while you're in there" things I did like 4 new CPS sensors, coils, water pump all new cooling system internal tensioners, all chains and guides and gaskets, retimed the engine with vanos was a fun part! Starting the car was a nervewracking experience as I had a loud hydraulic lifter immediately after and thought I had messed something up. About 4000 miles on the car since that job and she runs like a top!

What people dont get about owning a car like this, is its less an ownership than a stewardship - those that take on the responsibility treat it as that - a responsibility an honor - to keep something truly special in perfect working order, for themselves, and future generations to one day enjoy.Full respect Kennan, youre a true enthusiast and gentleman.

As someone who has owned a sub-100k mile E46 M3 for seven years, then a 150k+ mile Lexus GX and 150k+ mile Lexus LX (current), if I want another fast car, it's a Lexus F car all the way. I'll happily give up a few tenths to 60 for the ease of ownership Lexus has shown me. Beautiful M5 though, if you're into masochism.
