    I just watched your 2022 and 2023 TOI vlogs over the last four or five days. What an incredible journey! Outstanding job in the challenges and on the vlog. It was like binge watching a great TV mini-series.

    How difficult is this race compared to other hare scrambles? Videos are hard to judge the steepness and difficulty level.

  • @briangoss
    @briangoss20 күн бұрын

    It is high up on the list of difficulties. It's pretty relentless on the rocky side. If it is hot and dry, heat exhaustion is a very real issue. For 2024, currently, it is very dry and dusty. The route is backwards, and there are a lot of steep climbs. All that said, it's a very fun course.

    This has to be one of the best motorcycle endurance videos I’ve seen. I was in awe the entire video. I felt every kind of emotion watching this video. Excitement, nerves, and jealousy. Ha, I’m so damn jealous 😂 Thank you for sharing your experience with those of us with the same interests as yours. I am truly inspired by you!!! I live in Oregon at the moment, till I can move back to Boise, three years from now after I retire. This is a bucket list, but I’ll be 57 when I can retire, so I’ll have to wait till then. I’m not sure I’ll be able to complete the course, but that won’t stop me from trying 😁 Till then, I’ll just have to watch your videos. Again, I fully enjoyed this!!

    The Tour of Idaho solo is easily analogous to climbing Everest solo. The ability and intellect required to stop the ride or the climb can save your live and allow future adventures in those domains. Adventures at this level are seldom successful given the numerous opportunities for failure because of weather, rider error, or machine failure. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventure, and especially for being intelligent enough to survive it. Great video editing and photographic skills also!

    @@briangoss you mentioned only 5 years of riding dirt bikes? Incredible skills in so short of time! I began riding motorcycles at 15 when it was possible in the late 1960's to rent Yamaha 80 trail bikes at a local gas station! Now at 73 I ride a 2017 KTM 1090R on fast pavement and easy off-road rides, and a 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F for difficult and technical rides close to my home in remote Colorado. Addictive is a great term to describe our love of off-road adventures! Looking forward to your next video! I gave up on GoPro cameras recently after so many issues, which model did you use in the 2023 TOI videos? Your videos using them had great color, contrast, and focus!

    I've gotten hooked on your TOI video series. What other GPOS units have you used for riding? I have used a Garmin 176, 276C and currently have a 478. They are all the same form factor. I like the detailed mapping they offer for off-highway riding. For a short time I had a 276CX (2020) but I hated it because it was very slow to redraw the maps when zooming in and out, so I sold it after the 2020 riding season and kept using my 478. The 478 seems to have a minor issue with the screen not being as bright as it used to be, so I think it's time to replace it. Maybe the Montana 700 is what I need. On my Tenere 700, I started using a Zumo XT, but it really lacks the level of detail for backcountry riding I am accustomed to with the old school Garmins I've been using.

    I've heard about the Tour of Idaho before, and watched probably one video from someone else, but I had no idea it was a course laid out and an "event" that had to be completed in a given number of grueling long days of riding. Thanks for explaining what it is and sharing your experience.

    Amazing adventure!! Thanks for sharing. But my god, why not run a nitromousse?! They’ll last a full 1000+ mile race if you install and lube them correctly in the first place.

  • @briangoss
    @briangoss3 ай бұрын

    Very common question and one that has had a lot of discussion between all the participants. in the past many have tried mousse and they have failed, same with Tubliss. Why they failed we don't know. But I agree it is the logical solution. The technology and experience with them is much better now and the desert mousse should survive just fine. only question is the weight of the bike and what kind of effect that will have on long road sections. If i do something like this again, i will probably go with a Mousse and carry a tube just in case.

    I pre-rode all that stuff in the Lemhi range and into Leadore in 2022. It wasn’t on our Tour route in 2020. That stuff is sooooo good. I dubbed Devil’s basin “Devil’s buttcrack” and I think the 2022 iteration was the toughest and obviously took some teams out unfortunately. You faced some serious adversity and I can’t believe your resilience with crazy long days in the saddle. Great job with the editing. Even taking the emotional energy while you’re riding to be thinking of getting the shots, takes thought and energy on top of everything else you’re already dealing with.

    Another great job. I just finished Day 2. I appreciated the additional detail about the Tour rules. So many people just don’t get it and don’t understand why you can’t just get help along the way or have some chase you, then throw in special navigation sections, challenge points, bonus sections. We’re a select breed to enjoy this 😂

    1: watching and rooting for you big time all the way from little old England: YOU ARE A DAMN TROOPER sir, so are all who try this. 2: I cannot put into words how hard this must be mentally. 3: you are so lucky to have such a vast landscape to ride which leads me onto 4. 4: If i said i could imagine or comprehend how this must feel i would be lying, i have done long trips here on our island and we can get bad weather (most of the time hahahaa) and exposed terrain but the sheer area you are in is just unimaginable to people like me here. 5: what a shame they have stopped the event, what a shame. I know this is in the past but i am going to watch each episode and i truly hope you make it, i really do.

    Unbelievable, good job. I looked at this when it was 10 days long, but when people said it was a good idea to pre run some of it ahead of time it just seemed like a crazy commitment. Did you ride any of it in the year prior to this attempt? I hope you touch on your fitness level, I race MX and would consider myself above average for 55. But 13 days at that pace would be a dream. I'll target RIdaho, probably more my speed LOL. Good job on editing too!!

    Thanks, its a huge commitment. I race harescrambles in the northeast. I did attempt TOI in 2022 so the first 5 days i had seen before. that really is an advantage. As far as fitness, I was probably at 50-60% of where i really should have been. but you adapt and just focus on conserving energy wherever you can. its all part of the formula.
