    To answer your questions, cheap generic potting mix or seed mix, plant in late winter or early spring and that's about it. They're simple.

    Hey treeguy, love your videos! When you're planting these seeds in winter, are they outside in the wind rain and potential frost or do you have them protected from some things?

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy22 күн бұрын

    Hi I just have them outside, that's in Blenheim which is top of the south island in New Zealand which will get a few frosts that time of year, most species from Victoria/Tasmania won't mind too much but you can put them under eves easy enough. They seem to be pretty tough. But more northerly species should probably be protected from frost. Cheers

    Do they have to be cold stratified before planting?

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy3 ай бұрын

    In my personal experience I would say that no they don't, I just direct sow and get good germination, and I have grown many different cold/temperate species. But you will find others on the internet who swear that they get better or more even germination by stratifying. The seeds are so plentiful that I would say for the hobbyist, stratification is a waste of your time.

    You didn't mention your latitude or elevation. I live in Hawaii, at 19 degrees north latitude, 914 meters elevation. In my yard, I have two Slash Pines, aka Pinus elliotii, that are doing great. Pinus radiata is also very common here, though I don't have any myself. The Hawaii State tree nursery on Hawaii Island, produces radiata and elliotii seedlings for the public. I also bought Pinus canariensis seeds from a company in New York state, and so far, I have 70% germination rate. No stratification was necessary, just a 24 hour soak in water, then planted into pots. Five weeks after planting, I have seven seedlings. Canariensis is super easy to start. You might want to look into them.

    Super helpful video thanks! I live just round the corner from you, in Linkwater, and am thinking about planting some eucalypts to coppice for firewood. You've got me inspired to try to raise some from seed! Any species you'd particularly recommend, and is it worth starting them now (early March) so I can get them growing right away or should I wait until later in the year which sounds more likely to get a better strike rate? Thanks for any advice!

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy4 ай бұрын

    Hi that's cool you are in Linkwater, you should have an ideal climate. We camp at momorangi every summer and I often bike through Linkwater and admire the gums there, although I see a lot on the hills have been cut recently. For firewood I would look at ovata or nitens where you are. You could also try obliqua/regnans but I'm not sure they would coppice. Any of those would be good firewood. I have seen some very healthy looking regnans around Port Underwood so I think they would go very well in the sounds. I wouldn't bother planting seeds now, hold them until August is the best month I think. If you get stuck for seeds let me know I have plenty spare.

    Tried growing Black Cypress Pine from seed in Victoria Australia. In the first spring they grew to an inch and survived through to the next year with no extra growth. Worried now as spring has passed again and they didnt grow at all. Tried not to overwater but water just enough. Haven't been fertilising as I thought they were hardy. What could be the issue? They're in about half sun which is all my apartment balcony gets

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy7 ай бұрын

    Not sure, some conifers are very slow as seedlings but should put on some growth over spring. Maybe they need to be in full sun? Or try repotting in bigger pots with commercial potting mix; pots that are too small can stunt growth.

    What are those nice tree flats you have there? Where did you get them? Are they air pruning trays?

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy8 ай бұрын

    Hi yes they are 8*8 root trainer trays, made of rigid plastic. Can't remember where I got them but I think they are made here in NZ. They do have one flaw in that they do dry out extremely quickly due to the number of slits in the sides and the small volume per cell, you basically have to have automated watering every day.

    Hi there, your video is really informative, thank you My question relates to at what stage do you transfer seedlings from germination trays to pots/tubes/bags and how big do they need to be? Can you do seedlings a disservice by putting them in a 10cm pot when they are only 3-4cm in size?

  • @tr33guy
    @tr33guy8 ай бұрын

    Hi, with Eucalypts it doesn't seem to matter too much, in fact smaller is better as there is less root to disturb, and they seem to be pretty hard to kill and recover quickly. I often transplant them when they are only about 1cm, just enough to be able to pick them up by the leaves.

    Looks like a nice colour, I’m about to plant a couple more. If you’re wanting to attract Tui and bellbirds I recommend Fuchsia excorticata which is for sale through greenleaf nurseries at the moment, we have a few and they love them. Smaller growing than the Eucalyptus and look shrubby for the first few years but look quite attractive as they mature with an orange multi stem trunk. Also if starlings are an enemy on your vineyard like my Dad’s in Blenheim then I hear Tui can be quite territorial, and the local hawk steals the wax eyes from my Mum’s crab apple tree poor things but there’s plenty of food for the native birds.

    I live on 6 acres (3 ha) up in the hills in the west of Ireland. Around 10 years ago I planted half a dozen bareroot 3' (1m) Cryptomeria japonica saplings, and now they are 25' (8m) high, thick and bushy. I want more, but the local nurseries say they can't get them bareroot any more, so I plan to grow them myself from seed. So thank you @Treeguy, this was just what I needed to know! - and greetings to the wonderful west of New Zealand (I once spent time in Takaka and hiking through the forests down the west coast...)

    Thanks man, that's cool you've been spent time on the wild west of NZ. Crypto are really dead easy to grow from seed and in fact have gone wild on the west coast, they self seed prolifically so I have a never-ending nursery of seedlings popping up to be transplanted. They are a bit slow to get up to size from seed though, you might want to look at growing cuttings, they are supposed to be pretty simple but I have never tried. Might be a quicker way to get transplantable sized plants.
