    Nice Video! You could have used PWM and used a more high tech dosing system, but then you would have just built another electronic controlled heater.. I love your low tech control system, and your explanation of it, (I am an electronics geek, so I got it anyway)... You have proven how basic these things actually are. You have also demystified these heaters totally for me, in a few videos... I wonder no more. Thanks Heaps!!!

    the fact that you have it cyling at 70 per minute on the highest heat setting (according to your controller) is a tribute to how over fuelled these things are , i guess these big companies are all linked anyhow so why wouldn't they . , there is another guy on the tube setting his at 1 hz on the lowest setting , assuming thats one pump (drip per second) , it seems it is possible to go lower on the number 1 control setting . (Would it be possible to just pinch the fuel line a little upstream of the pump?) or would it destroy it , great work , very interesting thanks .

    Glad you're keeping busy. My car needs a new water pump, unfortunately it's a PT cruiser, and the engine has to be dropped and the timing belt removed. I can't do it, and no one else wants to touch it for any mount of money, so my main transportation is an electric scooter. I have an electric lawnmower. My neighbor says he'd get one but he's worried about running over the cord, but I've had it for 12 years and never done that. So every Saturday morning I have to listen to that lovely racket. I shut mine off in between rows, so when I mow, it's just a few "vroom's".

    Maybe it's enough work space, if you just remove the drive side's motor mount and maybe the middle mount, too - and instead of lowering the engine try to hoist it to various heights, depending on the bolt or part, you're working on. Maybe try a combination of lowering and raising Very often that gives you just enough clearance to work with - maybe with a little wedging force added - it would be the way, european cars usually got designed in this time period- and the PT-Cruiser has an European Diesel in it at least. Haven't worked on that body yet, though. I'd check that out, may work in your garage and you'd save a ton of money and maybe get the better work too.

    I've been benefitting from these videos over the past two years. I want to buy a little lathe just for fun. I haven't used a metal lathe since I was in high school in 1957. Doesn't matter. I'll have fun. I have definitely decided to not buy price. I'll allow six thousand or so for the lathe and accessaries / addons. Maybe more. The size? At least 10 x 20 inches. I don't want a lathe that has ball bearings on the spindle. Tapered rollers is much better. Will I select a gear head? Maybe. Haven't decided. I have an idea that I'll do lots of threading. Changing gears all the time doesn't thrill me much. I don't think I need a digital display. Speed adjusting seems more intuitive to me. I like Proxxon but they are too small. Otherwise their quality seems above average. I like Sherline quite a lot. Not sure though. On their website they don't provide prices but instead offer financing. They want to sell you on a product and later tell you what the damage will be. This usually means they are pricey. I don't mind spending but I don't want to have to search for the rest of my life to find out what something costs. Why do they hide it? Maybe because of the current inflation.... it changes a lot? So far I am leaning towards the one from Taiwan. Precision Matthews 1228 model with dro and a box of goodies to make it even more fun. This one runs on 110vac single phase with a variable speed DC motor. Seems just right. Any larger lathe from PM needs 240vac and maybe three phase too. I don't need all that sophistication in my garage. Watching all these videos is almost as much fun as having the machine all set up and ready for ???? I have no idea what I'll use it for. I guess I will find out later. May as well get a little mill while I'm at it. Why not? Fun fun fun... The reader can tell I'm the fussy type. It's true. Why not? After all this talk I'll probably end up buying a Harbor Freight 14 inch. ha ha... Well, I can have fun on that model too.

    Precision matthews has some great stuff and they are great to deal with. I bought a milling machine from them, and have heard nothing but good things. LOL... we all want a big fancy lathe ... but the fact that we don't all have one means we come up with reasons not to go through with it. It is a little harder to justify if you don't' even know what you will be doing with it, but, if you have one, you will find things to do with it.

    I love your videos but you saying there is no pressure is just plain wrong. Pressure can exist without restriction of flow. For example, atmospheric pressure is a thing. It is the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on what is under it. Also, there is head pressure. As you dive under water the weight of the water presses down on you and that is a pressure. If you drink through a straw that's because of pressure. There is atmospheric pressure pushing down on the fluid in the cup and when you suck on the straw you cause a drop in pressure in the straw causing a pressure differential in the straw allowing fluid to flow up the straw. Try sucking water through a drinking straw and then try sucking honey through a drinking straw. When you try to suck the honey through the straw, the straw flexes before you can draw honey through because that takes less pressure than it does to draw the honey up through the dlstraw. That is obviously exaggerated compared to to the diesel line but the same principle exists. In your test you have the fuel source above the heater allowing gravity to provide the head pressure (fuel pressure in this case). If you don't think you need pressure place the fuel source below the heater and see what happens. It DEFINITELY won't work.

  • @loweredexpectations4927
    @loweredexpectations492712 күн бұрын

    I get what you are saying, but respectfully argue the following. If there is no resistance, there is no pressure. Gravity pulls down on stuff, but if you don't' resist, then it is in free fall. Atmospheric pressure is real, yes, but if you have pressure equalization, the the differential is zero. Unless you create a vacuum (low pressure area) then the atmospheric pressure is applied to everything, so the net pressure is zero. Pulling fuel up with the pump requires a pressure differential, so you could say that there is pressure, but the pressure between the tank and pump is at a negative. (lower than atmosphere) If you are pushing fuel uphill, the "pressure" from gravity is at the pump, and not at the head of the fuel... Meaning, the closer to the top of the fuel colum you get, the closer to zero pressure you have. The pressure exists within the fuel colum (and is a result of the resistance of the fuel and fuel line below) not between the top of the fuel colum and atmosphere / entrance to the heater. This is almost arguing semantics, but I am still correct about there not being any pressure in the system I built. The only pressure exists between the fuel container and the valve / restriction. There is actually a negative pressure between the restriction / valve and heater. This is caused by the fuel wanting to fall due to gravity, and the restriction of the valve. If there wasn't a negative pressure in the fuel line, the fuel would fall out of the hose, into the heater at a free fall, minus the restriction from viscosity.

  • @brentonrawhoof1967
    @brentonrawhoof196712 күн бұрын

    @loweredexpectations4927 it's not arguing semantics is literally physics and a fact. You're saying a bunch of words in an attempt ignore actual physics. There is no point in arguing with you if you ignore this. It's not even hard to grasp. The terms head pressure and atmospheric pressure literally have PRESSURE in the name and there is ZERO flow restriction.

  • @loweredexpectations4927
    @loweredexpectations492712 күн бұрын

    @@brentonrawhoof1967 Maybe it's not clear as to why I say "it's arguing semantics" When I say at the intro of the video that there isn't any pressure, I go on to explain that there isn't a nozzle, and the fuel dribbles in. I'm taking about pressure in the fuel line as the result of a nozzle / injector restriction. Debunking the idea that the performance of the heater is dependent on fuel being squirted or misted and that rigid fuel line would make any difference vs soft line. I'm talking about pressure significant enough that "soft" fuel line would expand / absorb enough energy to change the operation of the heater, while rigid line would be able to contain the pressure, and increase performance. The fact that I said "pressure is the restriction of flow" indicates that I am talking about pressure differentials in a system, and not atmospheric pressure or pressure from gravity. All of that being said, pressure is literally "force exerted per area" Force can not be exerted without a restriction. The key word being "exerted". No restriction = no exertion. Head pressure and atmospheric pressure only exist because they are being contained and therefore haven't something to exert force on. Again. In my gravity feed system, there is pressure, but 1. not relevant to debunking soft vs rigid line and 2. the pressure in the system is between the fuel storage container and the valve. If you put a pressure gauge after the valve, it would read as a vacuum due to the mass of the fuel in the line. I think some of the confusion stems from my quick explanation, but also from people getting stuck on a specific thing, instead of grasping the overall picture. Like in the last paragraph, when I said "vacuum" I obviously didn't mean it in the literal sense, but it is the word that makes the most sense to use, unless you are writing in a science journal. So. The no pressure statement at the start of this video meant. "no significant pressure between the pump and burn chamber." "Significant" meaning, great enough to cause a noticeable loss of performance, do to soft fuel line absorbing energy, and decreasing fuel delivery energy.

    Minute 2:13 - i also have such a variable square, i suggest you a fixed square for 90 degrees, they sold it with a sort of extended side, so to fix exactly and quickly the 90 degrees position, after having oriented the compound in any other position. I also built myself special squares for MK2 and MK3 tapers, the most common tapers used in our chinese lathe. That squares i suppose would cost a big amount of money, mine are built with two point screws at a fixed distance one from the other, fixed in a similar square i told you before ; they are protruding just a bit one from the other, to realize, with the previous distance, a taper 2 ... similar for taper 3 ... That squares are fixed, i use one of them to adjust compound to proper angle so to cut the wanted taper ... Of course exact protruding of the two screws is essential, and also their distance. In any case you can adjust minor errors with a file to adjust one of the screw to the exact value ...
